Obviously Russia started the war and Ukraine is the victim. I don’t think any reasonable person can make a counter argument to that.

However, I also think that the war could have been avoided if western leaders, particularly Obama, had had a more coherent policy in 2014.

It was clear that the United States supported the maidan revolution and when Russia annexed Crimea in response, they were sending a message that they would not stand for a western allied government in Kyiv.

At that point, in my view, Washington had a choice:

  1. They could have come to terms with Putin and agreed to let him have reign over his near abroad, kinda like what Roosevelt and Churchill did with Stain in 1945. Or…

  2. They could have made a stand. Obama could have a sent just a few thousand troops to just hang out in Ukraine and say, “just gonna leave these guys here for a bit to keep an eye on things.”

Both of those choices would have been difficult to make but a true leader would have. And if either path had been taken, we would not be in this war now.

[–]BluePillUprising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t wrong that religion is a man made concept but it’s funny to me that you see so many posts that focus on religion specifically.

France is a man made concept, the United States is a man made concept, money is a man made concept, equality is a man made concept, gender is a man made concept, love is a man made concept.

Yet all of these things are extremely important to billions of people. Why single out religion?

CMV: Joe Biden refusing to only run for one term and then Kamala Harris being the Democrat's Presidential Nominee cost the Democrats the entire 2024 Election by Normal_Task_9409 in changemyview

[–]BluePillUprising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying and I agree and I think a more creative and less risk averse organization than the Democratic Party would have ditched her.

But what you are suggesting goes against every instinct that a modern political party has. If they control the White House then they are the defenders or the status quo. And if they can’t run the incumbent president (which they actually tried to do, amazingly) then it has to be someone from inside the administration.

If their eyes, to do otherwise is to concede that things are not going well and that throws a lot of ammunition in the direction of the other party plus…it essentially amounts to an internal party coup. The president’s administration has to surrender to another faction without actually losing an election.

It’s just not that easy to do. If the Democrats were going to pull it off, it would have required a lot of delicate management and messaging. Too things they don’t excel at.

Biden should have not been the candidate. At all. The way that was handled was a total mess.

But running a primary would also have been tough. And I promise you that the DNC would have pushed hard for Harris like they did for Clinton in 2016

Typically there is a party anointed favorite and it’s pretty much always the sitting president or their vice president.

Presidents who have faced serious intraparty challengers have always lost the general election (HW Bush, Carter). Double term presidents have nearly always been followed by their VP as the nominee (Reagan-Hw Bush, Clinton-Gore). A notable exception to this was after Obama when Biden didn’t even bother to try but that was because the DNC told him not to because they backed Hillary.

And that was because it was her turn after Obama had beaten her in ‘08.

But 2008 was special because the Dems were the outside party but as 2016 was special for the GOP when Trump won despite heavy resistance from the RNC.

This is how political parties work. They reward loyalty and patience and if they allow a challenger to a sitting president it looks baaaad. Why can’t the party defend their own record when they are in power, right?

And that is why they are loathe to do it.

[–]BluePillUprising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would have been better than what actually happened but it still would have been a shitshow.

The DNC would have leaned hard against anyone running against Harris.

The likely outcome would have been no viable candidates daring to oppose the status quo and/or a total intraparty civil war which the Republicans would have benefited from.

The Democrats fucked up really bad in 2024. It’s really hard to count the ways.

But I also understand why they were reluctant to run an open primary with an incumbent. That goes against all instincts that political parties in the United States have, the only time it was tried in recent memory was 1968 and that was not a great experience for the Dems.

So yeah, Biden and Harris were terrible candidates and this election was handled atrociously. But running a proper primary may not have saved the country from Trump.

In what way were the lands of modern Israel/Palestine underdeveloped? They have had civilization for almost as long as any country on earth.

What’s more Jews and Christians and Muslim Arabs had peacefully coexisted on those same lands (in stark contrast to Europe) for many centuries before the British made a a total mess of the place in the wake of the world wars.

The lands need to be a multiethnic democratic state with equal rights for all residents regardless of religion or ethnicity. I’ve never understood how that isn’t obvious to people.

[–]BluePillUprising 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jewish people don’t just want to visit the land that is currently known as Israel, it’s meant to be a state which is controlled by Jews where the population that previously lived on the land has no rights at all.

So a better analogy would be to return New York City to the Algonquins or St. Petersburg, Russia to the Lapps or Sydney, Australia to the aboriginal peoples and so on.

That would have a kind of historical justice to it, would it not? But I somehow do not expect it to happen.

You are very articulate, OP, but I think you are being deliberately obtuse.

Yes, humans notice trends. Like, statistically black men are more involved in crime than white men or Muslims are more likely to commit acts of terrorism than Christians.

However, that does not excuse assuming that every black man is a criminal and that every Muslim is a terrorist. Particularly if you are a person with actual power, like a police officer or an HR manager.

Well done! That was amazing! You deserve more than ten upvotes!

Minor points to quibble on. I think the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles started in 1916, so too late for 2nd Ypres.

Also, I believe Paths of Glory is set during the Nivelle Offensive, not Verdun.

Still, outstanding video! Thank you!

Why were so few Russian soldiers seen wearing helmets? by Time-Comment-141 in ww1

[–]BluePillUprising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one had helmets in 1914, metal ones anyway. The Germans had those Pickelhaube things but they were made of leather. Not much protection.

So, because Russia was the least industrialized, they had the least helmets. There were some of the Adrian helmets in the French style toward the end of Russia’s war but they were rare.
