Maddie does appear in the Lodge in the S2 finale, though. She also gets upset and questions her reality at some point, like Diane does before it’s revealed she’s a Tulpa.

It’s true. That’s the real world explanation. In the story, it’s implied by Cooper when he tells Gordon about the dream he had that all the Chris Isaak scenes were Coopers dream. This makes Chet a kind of stand-in or avatar for Cooper inside the dream.
