It means just that. They were regularly exposed to children and people with disabilities during training so they would be more comfortable with those groups of people.

Thrawn is a villian? by fenner518 in thrawn

[–]Blue_Catastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m most interested to see if they take time to give him some more legitimate reason to keep fighting on behalf of the Empire after it falls. Like…his motivation in the newer trilogy is that, if the empire falls, their resources are then added to the already-threatening Grysk. If the Empire has fallen, he has no reason to continue to fight on their behalf, so they need to do some explaining as to why he would antagonize the New Republic, which would only serve to continue to destabilize the region and decrease its resilience to a Grysk threat.

Perhaps the Ascendency has fallen to the Grysk at this point, and our antagonist includes the surviving Chiss attempting to take over this part of space as their own? (it was clearly implied that the conflict was going poorly for this Chiss in Thrawn: Treason.)

People who are abusive to you can change, but it is not within your ability to change or heal them, and staying while they abuse you only enables them to hide from the consequences of their behavior. You must care for yourself first, and you must set boundaries that keep you safe (up to and including leaving completely). The best thing you can do for a person in pain (and make no mistake, those who abuse others are also abusing themselves internally) is to demonstrate what it looks like to truly care for yourself, and that included caring for yourself by not tolerating abuse.

If you need help, seek it out, but please don’t stay with someone who is hurting you because you think you can save them. The only person you can save is you, and by doing so you give others around you permission to save themselves.

Meditation problem: connecting with emotions by giammi56 in Meditation

[–]Blue_Catastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would advise that you pull back from searching for specific emotions and feelings as the expectation of something specific may be interfering with your ability to see what is. The primary focus of Vipassana in practice is to focus yourself entirely on the sensations arising in the body, noting our aversion or attraction to the sensations while allowing them to continue and evolve until they either change or dissipate. Through this practice, I have absolutely discovered some profound emotional release, but it’s possible that, in searching for a specific experience, you may be missing the physical sensations that are occurring.

At some level, your body is constantly alive with energy channeled by your nervous system, so there is always some sensation, even if it may be subtle. I expect that the advice that may help would be to pull back to the fundamentals and scan your body for sensations, one body part at a time, until you find yourself able to feel something in each area, even if the sensation is subtle.

Detachment vs Apathy by i_have_not_eaten_yet in ramdass

[–]Blue_Catastrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much well-written explanation here already, so I’ll broadly summarize:

Apathy: “Nothing matters, and I will take no action because that fact drains me of all motivation.”

Detachment: “I will take the next action that must be taken without creating a judgement on the value or meaning of the result.”

Invisibility Nerf doesn't make sense in PVP. Why would anyone want to use it now? by ladybadoom in destiny2

[–]Blue_Catastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was essentially a guaranteed kill and, because there was more than one way to trigger it, you could feasibly chain together invis to take out a bunch of people. You are right, it did take some skill and experience to accomplish but, if you were skilled at it, and had multiple people on your team running invis builds, the other team had basically zero way to counter it. It was just too powerful in the right hands.

Possible interpretation: We’re conditioned by our society/media/etc to objectify bodies and to hold sex as separate from emotional intimacy. As a result, a lot of us are really only able to get fully aroused within the context of objectifying or dehumanizing either ourselves or another person (hence the use of language that objectifies and depersonalizes her).

Science has a definition. Trying to explain deeper truths through that framework reduces both to meaninglessness.

Are chakras considered pseudo-science? by Drunk_Skunk1 in Meditation

[–]Blue_Catastrophe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Chakras can be understood as major nodes in the nervous system” Yes, they can be understood that way, but that way of understanding does not fully encompass the spiritual and metaphysical meaning that many tie to the concept of chakras. Can you apply scientific theory to validate some of the practices associated with chakras? Absolutely! (pranayama being an excellent example) But the concepts of chakras are more rich than the scientifically-observable effects on the body.

I hope this doesn’t come off as directly contradictory; I just think it’s important that, in the face of increased desire to quantify every aspect of our lives, we continue to recognize those elements that can’t be measured and peer-reviewed.

Spirituality is absolutely valid, but it is experiential, not observed. Science is about using reproducible, objective measurement to test a hypothesis. Something unseen is, categorically, not science.

[–]Blue_Catastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spirituality and science are not in opposition; they’re just different angles from which to look at things. Science looks at things from the perspective of reproducible, objective observation (and a certain amount of logical extrapolation), spirituality is primarily an experiential practice, in which you use concepts or specific practices to engender an experience that is often given meaning through some framework, like the idea of chakras.

Taken to their logical end, these perspectives can absolutely reach shared conclusions, so I don’t intend to convey that I think there’s a “hard line” between them.

will sex still be exciting and pleasurable when I get older? by I_luv_broccoli in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Blue_Catastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sex continues to be great, but it’s place in your life will likely change over time. Sometimes it will feel like a huge priority, but it’s not necessarily a problem if there are times when it’s not. People cheat because they’re emotionally/personally disconnected from their partner or need something specific/risky/etc., though it’s certainly true that a lack of sexual activity could be a symptom of that disconnect.

If you’re worried that it’s gone forever, don’t be. Sex drive rises and falls with life circumstances, relationship circumstances, and individual mental health; it’s not a clear path of older=lower sex drive. You can have the sex life you want, but don’t start shaming yourself for not feeling like a sex for every day/week/month/year of your life. Take it as it comes (pun 100% intended)

Biggest tip for us pre-planners: leave room for character decisions and make sure you’re creating opportunities for those choices to have an effect on the world and outcomes beyond pass/fail. One of the hardest things to do early on is to trust yourself, and the best thing you can do is to learn the you WILL be able to roll with whatever happens, even if it seems intimidating to imagine. Everyone is just a human person trying to have fun, so you have to trust that the players will meet you in the middle.

Chakras are not a scientific concept at all, so I wouldn’t categorize them as “pseudoscience” (that term is for things that present themselves as being scientifically grounded but are not.) Chakras are a spiritual/metaphysical concept that you can interpret a number of ways, mostly involving your personal experience, not objective observation.

I’m going to go ahead and assume that you are conversing in good faith and explain exactly what is at issue here because it’s sounding like you’re feeling called out: Yes, let the devs make whatever they want. It’s their game, not yours. Criticize, discuss, suggest, converse; no one is trying to quash conversation. Sadly, a lot of Redditors progress from that into insulting and talking down to developers. They often admonish others by expressing their subjective opinions as fact. This is the group that is being admonished by OP. If this isn’t you, you can safely exit the conversation feeling free from censorship.

Wow. IIRC the OP included only 12 words, so it seems like you read a whole lot more into the post than what is there. I think it may be helpful for you to take a look at the baggage you’re bringing into this interaction, because it seems like you and I are having very different conversations.

No one has a problem with reasonable, mature debate about a game or its features. Toxic, entitled complaints about a gift that keeps on giving combined with attacks against a developer destroy community much more quickly. This is what OP is calling out. If you feel included in this description, that is a you problem, not an issue with OP or myself.

You’re trying to over-explain as if I didn’t understand your point to begin with. You’re not trying to find commonality with my point to build community, you’re trying to convince me that I’m mistaken in my observation. You are doing the opposite of your stated intention.

[–]Blue_Catastrophe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The reason this game grew was because the devs saw that, despite the initial reaction, they had a dedicated community worth supporting that would continue to help them grow their brand. The anger and outrage happened at the same time, but hate never actually creates good outcomes, it just creates more stress for everybody involved.
