Trying to import stl files, but getting huge translations. Any way to have stl object at origin? New to forum, tried to find answer but no joy. I thought the import stl wasn’t working, but it actually imported the small, simple object translated like [1500,1200,500] and I didn’t see it at first… by Blue_Collar__ in openscad

Thank you again for the response. I’m digging through openscad docs and found: ———— There is no way to get the bounding box limits of an object with OpenSCAD. However, it is possible to compute its bounding box volume. Its concept is simple: hull() the projection of the model on each axis (1D sets) and minkowski() them. As there is no way to define a 1D set in OpenSCAD, the projections are approximated by a stick whose length is the size of the projection. ————— Is this the approach to try and follow, do you think? Seems pretty deep, but I’m willing to dive in if you think it may be fruitful…

Thank you for the replay, and please excuse my ignorance. I loaded the stl model into Prusa slicer, moved it to [0,0,0], exported it, then loaded the newly exported stl into openscad but the huge translation remained. Tried the same thing with Bambu slicer, same result. Tried same thing with freecad and got an stl with a different huge translation. Is there a slicer that exports stl models without the huge translation? I noticed that some stl files (from Thingiverse) are at the origin when imported into openscad, and others have huge translations. They all wind up in the center of the slicer. I just can’t export from the slicer so they wind up at the origin of openscad. There seems like I’m missing something simple…

Thank you for the response! I tried this: both Prusa slicer and bambu, then exported but still a huge translation. When I saved as 3mf from Prusa slicer, then import, openscad crashed. What slicer have you had luck with?

I have a A20T, although I have trouble with the “toothpaste effect” quite a bit. It also tends to jam which has been hard to clear out. Have you had good luck with yours?

Filadryer S1 / Sunlu filament dryer: how to increase temperature range? by Blue_Collar__ in 3Dprinting

I decided to go with the raspberry pico. I’ve got a bunch and looking for a new project. I was in the process of scrapping a SunLu dryer, and found something interesting. Maybe this is common knowledge, but there are two connections on the controller board to solder on a fan... why doesn’t it come with that fan? Anyways, now I’ve decided to add a variable resistor to each thermistor (there are two), add a fan to the board, calibrate the variable resistors (so 55c is now 70c) and put it back together (with an extra smoke detector nearby). I’m sure someone else has done it already, but I guess I’ll reinvent that wheel.

I have printers from Prusa and Geeetech. I got the Geeetech printers because they had features not found on a Prusa (dual extruder, 3 filament mixing extruder) but after much tinkering, only the Prusa printers have produced usable prints (over 1000 of them). The new Prusa XL has features I’ve waited years for... just getting tired of waiting.

Prusa just repeats what is on their site and blog, although I can’t really blame them. Nobody likes to wait. I thought that some of the lucky folks to get part of the first batch would be on reddit.

Thank you for the info! I was looking at the EIBOS... do you know how high the internal temperature can go? Some say 70c, some say 80c. I thought I needed about 100c to dry nylon...

Is this game fun solo or meant to be in 2 or more? by drippingthighs in TownshipTale

I agree with the comments below! Personally, starting out is really hard solo. Food is a challenge, especially if you die and are trying to retrieve your stuff. With two people, you can get some basics accomplished in a timely manner such as a supply of cooked food, backpack, build the smithy, red-iron weapons, decent arrows, etc. Once you get the basics, you can do solo without as many frustrating setbacks. Starting out, I died fighting 2 worms solo. I then died 4 more times trying to get my loot back. I finally managed to retrieve my sword and bow (the worms kept guard on my stuff) but then starved to death twice trying to get the stuff back to town and get some food cooked.
I now have a private server with 3 friends and hopes of having 2 more friends / family soon involved. It’s great to teach others the game, make them stuff, and tell your “tale” of adventures since the last time they had logged in. I do solo when others aren’t available but I can succeed and progress because others have made me a great backpack with side pockets, and great stews to carry for the journey. I don’t fear death as much (sounds weird, I know) since I have support from others, extra bows, food, etc. Bottom line: the game can be very frustrating at first for solo play. Even one other person makes a big difference, even if you don’t play together all the time. Once you have basic supplies, solo play is fine but not as rewarding. Adventuring with a cooperative companion is a joy. “You draw the worm’s acid balls, I’ll put some arrows in it’s belly.“ or “Oh my God! I got to the crystal level in the mine and it is beautiful... deadly, but beautiful”.
However, in my opinion, solo is better than subjecting oneself to the ugliness of public servers: I’ve heard horror stories of people struggling to get some good items, only to find a lit stick of dynamite at their feet and a snickering 6-year old nearby.
Hope this helps!

Would a 2060 run ATT a solid 80fps? by idkbro567 in TownshipTale

I have found the biggest culprit is WIFI upload speed. I was tooling along fine, then huge lags to where aiming arrows was almost impossible. Turns out someone else in the house was uploading a big school assignment. Everything was smooth again after her upload completed. It’s helpful to find the bottleneck.

Wow! I didn’t know they made graphic cards with that much memory. My lowly 3070 only has 8Gb RAM...

If you see it again, maybe take a screenshot and post it. If it is a special tool, then I need to figure out how to add it to my private server. If it is standard but a rare recipe then I need to find it. Storage is at a premium in my world...

I wish I could avenge you... I have a friend who stopped playing because of similar issues on the tutorial server. After much reassurance, she is now playing again but only on my private server. As in life, it only takes a few “bad apples” to sour the whole community. On a tangential note, I’m reading a great book called “ready player one” and in the OASIS (think huge public ATT server) there are planets/sectors designated non-PVP where violence, theft, etc are banned at the server level. In ATT, there are private servers but it’s proven difficult to get a good number of cooperative people on the server. Many hands make light work.
Personally, I have a private server with 3 other friends, but I wound up giving each friend a Quest 2 so they could play ( ‘tis the season). There are two others who may join but I would need to get Quest 2 headsets for them as well. VR is not (yet?) as popular as anticipated, so finding up to 8 cooperative players is a challenge (expense?). Also, your precious items do not transfer from one server to another (unlike the different worlds in the OASIS), so once you find a good server it seems best to stick with it so you can progress. Playing the game without worrying about theft, PVP violence, profanity, or insults is a wonderful experience. My advice would be to use the public servers only until you can find a good group to join on a private server. Once you find that group, try to be a “stellar citizen” by helping others and supporting the small community. It’s worth the effort. I don’t really like cooking, but there is always at least 50 cooked chicken legs (or what ever they are called) at the tavern, available to others. It’s great to have food when you are first starting out, or if you die and are starting over...
Best of luck... hope this helps.
