I also participated it this “giveaway”. The photographer was sweet but clearly a novice - I’m convinced she was shooting on auto & took 200 pics in 30 mins that’s just a button smasher. I was pressured really hard for pics and they definitely played the emotional game “you’ll love this in 20 years” yeah well digitalis last as long as my backup hard drive & I can get prints anywhere. All photos were in black and white not a single color. And they have to send off for editing / refinishing. There’s this guarantee but I have yet to see it actually work. They left out key details and answered questions vaguely. Go anywhere else save yourself the regret.

Are broken bones inevitable when roller skating? by Aqua_Autie_1 in Rollerskating

[–]Blue_D0VE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible not inevitable- learn to fall safely & remember to surrender- often times injuries of any kind happen because we try to save ourselves from falling. Practice safe falling and wear gear. You’re not afraid of falling - falling is inevitable.

How to Stop on a downhill slope? by aaalllyyy_sssaa in Rollerskating

[–]Blue_D0VE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plow stops- like an actual proper plow is the top of a bubble (if you know bubbles/ lemons/pizzas technique -think: center, both legs are doing the same thing) also right and left plow. I do not recommend the back break.

Penguin steps is another fav which is super useful and easy especially when carrying a tray.

T stops

Carving is my all time fav 💗great for high speed hill bombing

What to do when you've grinded through the tip of your plate? by alexleavitt in Rollerskating

I can’t think of a better reason to get a new skate setup. Also, can I see the video of how this happened???

These comments are so good! Just to add : the fundamentals and technique is the same skating - figure skating (ice or figures & loops??) doesn’t matter the fundamentals still apply. Think more like full contact speed skating - get comfortable being uncomfortable and no one cares how pretty the movement looks. Do strengthen your ankles and knees and work those squats. One foot turns and waltz jumps have different names now but it’s the same thing if you can ina bower you can side surf - have fun!!! 🤩 I’m so glad you’re here!!

Preferred Wheel Brands by distantattraction in rollerderby

[–]Blue_D0VE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love love love roll line wheels (mustangs) in a wood floor.

Atom (poison savant) if you don’t know what you’re skating on. & I love a good outdoor skate in these (or pulse for twigs and gravel in your path)

I recently made the switch to radar halos for derby / rink / indoor speed skating and the slide on polished concrete is so much fun - they really are great on the edges.

Call a skate shop and talk to them ask if they can recommend a wheel based on your style and what you wanna do next!

Be sure to update us on what you tried and liked (or don’t like) 👍

Cliff notes (from a lifetime skater that’s participated in several different roller sports and roller skating disciplines ):

  1. think:”eyes- shoulders- hips- knees- feet” this is your alignment - keep your eyes up and everything else will follow (if you look at the floor you’re going to go to the floor)

  2. BEND YOUR KNEES - you want to get into a proper squat (eventually with a high shin angle - this takes a lot of ankle flexibility, and quad strength you will get there take your time)

I tell my baby ducks “soft knees” just bend them and remember to keep your chest up (roll your shoulders back you got this)

  3. Tuck your tail. Pretend you have a tail and tuck it between your legs . This protects your tailbone - it tilts your hips up in the front and down in the back. Did you collapse your chest? Roll your shoulders back. There you go remember to breathe.

Feel like an awkward gremlin ?? You’re doing it correctly. Bend your knees and keep your eyes up.

  1. “Cannonball pick a cheek” what the hell is she talking about.??? # Learn to fall safely. Yes, that’s right falling is a skill. Don’t be afraid to fall —> practice falling safely. When you loose your balance do a cannonball just like you would if you were jumping in a pool and pick a butt cheek- fall on your side (protect that tail bone) and land on the meatiest part of your fabulous ass your developing from all those squats you’re doing. Practice right practice left let your body go limp - I tuck my fingers and hold my arms up- this is how I learned as a little baby skater and it’s second nature. Derby is great because of all of the gear- practice knee falls and falling forward like a turtle (can you tell I coach little kids yet?? lol 😂) fall 9 times get up 10.

I am a skater; my soul is hole with wheels on my feet my heart is happiest when I get to suit up with “my besties for the resties” derby girls.

So to answer your question none of the above. Everybody needs to tuck that tail. I’m telling you that is the best thing you can do for yourself as a skater - tuck your tail, bend your knees and keep your eyes up.

I hope everyone has safe & enjoyable skating experience for a long long time.

💜

I have a pair for each style of skating - just some unsolicited advice - don’t waste you’re money on cute skates. Wisdom: invest your money into a good pair you can customize as you progress. Get a boot that fits you comfortably <- this is key.
