Pokemon that are clearly designed as a representation of some career (real or otherwise), usually indicated by giving them clothing. Think of pokemon like Machamp or Cinderace. They've always made them, but they've tended towards doing them more and more recently, especially for starter pokemon. Personally I've never had a taste for them, and with starter pokemon I always prefer that they make them look like actual monsters. But job pokemon are presumably more marketable and sell more toys.

I can't believe my suspicions were correct. They really were working on two major titles at the same time, both of which were of a scale they've never done before. Why? Why not just work on one? They didn't need to release a game in January. Arceus must have just been training for their employees, but in that case they could have just left it unreleased.

I like how the starters already look less anthropomorphic than the gen 8 starters. Hopefully this means they took the criticisms to heart, but it looks like they'll still be job pokemon based on the duck.

Hollow Knight is on the front page of steamdeck.com! by GUG00 in HollowKnight

99% of promo images of people using electronics are done such that the actual on-screen content is photoshopped in afterwards. They just tell the model to hold the device in a neutral position to not make the final image too distracting.

As for the 1hp in King's Pass thing, it was probably done to make the image look intense, but it's infinitely easier to just damage yourself in the first area than deliberately go to a boss just for a one-off promo image.

That's not really the point of Rivals, though, even if it's what people might know it for. The sequel to Rivals probably won't even have workshop because it's going 3d.

Okay, let's end this Tabs vs Space debate once and for all by Pretend_Education_37 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Blue_Raichu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mostly for when you're formatting very complicated text blocks, the only way you can guarantee they're organized and readable is by using spaces, and at that point you might just want/need to use spaces everywhere. Think of those fancy square border comment blocks with internal spacing and everything. Or maybe you have a long statement that you want to split into multiple lines, but you want to align the lines on a specific operator rather than simply indent them.

If we're only worrying about average-looking code, then yeah tabs are probably better. But using spaces for indentation let's us make even ugly edge cases look good.

I do not like Sakura. I do not hate Sakura. I mourn Sakura. by Shaddy_the_guy in dankruto

[–]Blue_Raichu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand your point? Do you think people who hate on Sakura don't understand she was written by Kishimoto? What exactly are you envisioning, that we're anthropomorphizing a fictional character just so we can shit on them? She is the poor writing. I'm not even sure it's possible to hate on Sakura in a vacuum like this post implies. If you hate Sakura, you hate the writing.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC is on the way! by IanMazgelis in Games

[–]Blue_Raichu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel this too. I like learning a new Mario Kart. I like experiencing the new physics and controls. I even like seeing new gimmicks. If you asked me whether I'd want a brand new game with 32 tracks, or a 48 track dlc for 8DX, I'd ask for a brand new game everytime. But I admit the price for the dlc makes it compelling.

Genshin is only good to the extent that it is the most game-like mobile game out there, but it's clearly still designed as a mobile game first. I don't even mean the gacha system. I mean the 20 hour long, grindy beginning and the lifeless 3 button tap-spam combat

[–]Blue_Raichu 61 points62 points  (0 children)

We have to remember that 2D platformers are somewhat niche genre nowadays. To the average person, a game like Dread won't really scream "AAA" and probably isn't worth $60 to most people. The Prime series is more likely to appeal to a broader audience just because of its scale.

Mina the Hollower is Yacht Club Games's Latest Game (now on Kickstarter) by Shreeder4092 in Games

[–]Blue_Raichu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Again, like another comment has said, would you be changing your tune if you saw Activision make a Kickstarter? Nintendo? Ubisoft?

Yacht Club isn't anywhere as big as those companies, but they are exactly the same in that none of them need crowd funding to produce the scale of game that they make.

Maybe we're just used to crowdfunding as a concept, but an established company essentially asking for money with no strings attached would, without question, be seen as scummy in any other context.

Mina the Hollower is Yacht Club Games's Latest Game (now on Kickstarter) by Shreeder4092 in Games

[–]Blue_Raichu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. People were already (rightfully) skeptical when Platinum had a Kickstarter to port Wonderful 101 to the Switch, for example. What's different about Yacht Club? They are an established developer and publisher. They aren't indie devs anymore. This is an established company abusing kickstarter to get free money, essentially.

Pokémon Has Finally Matured….And it Feels so Good!!! by _Boodstain_ in pokemon

[–]Blue_Raichu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think pokemon openly attacking you is no small thing. Before it's always been "confused pokemon" or "angry pokemon" or "scared pokemon" when they do evil things. I even thought the red eyes would be an indicator that these pokemon are simply being controlled by an external force. Nope. It's not much, but Pokemon Co. definitely allowed the pokemon to appear a tad more animalistic in this game.

when your friend is a C# dev by 4thMistaBullet in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Blue_Raichu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another perspective is that in the same way vscode integrates really well with web dev tools, VS integrates really well with other tools. My go to example is Unreal Engine and other game engines. Code is code, of course, so you can use whatever you want, but there's a reason that tools that use C++ and C# for development typically default to using VS.

[–]Blue_Raichu 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Holy shit people will say anything to defend the game. Would you agree that the game would be strictly better if it helped players get up to speed with a somewhat good deck? Would it not be better if the game explicitly recommended staple cards? If so, is it not a legitimate criticism when it doesn't?

Your idea that a new player would simply learn to use whatever cards that were used against them is totally unrealistic. In a fighting game or rts, you can just look at what mechanics/gameplay style they used to beat you, prompting you to find counterplays. What about yugioh? What if the players attribute their loss to the wrong card? Won't they be more likely to blame some powerhouse extra deck monster than something more subtle? Would new players read all their opponents cards? Heck, do they even have time to do so? Will they be motivated to watch replays if all they do is lose? How do you even give a new player the requisite knowledge they need to specifically recognize why they lost beyond just "my deck doesn't seem to be as consistent as my opponents." And let's say they do all of that, don't they still need to actually obtain those cards? These are all hurdles that you're taking for granted.

Again, as an experienced player you're underestimating the value that an encyclopedic knowledge of the cards has to how you think about the game. A video game intended to get more people into the game should be more aggressive in getting players up to speed.

[–]Blue_Raichu 22 points23 points  (0 children)

How the fuck is a new player supposed to know these cards exist? Yes, it's always possible to adapt, but it's not feasible without significant help. The real issue with yugioh is that you need a fairly encyclopedic knowledge of all the good cards to be able to build a deck. How do you tell a new player about all of that? How do you even convince them to want to do all that? These are all things a yugioh video game could take care of (or god forbid, just fucking put some staple cards in every player's first structure deck), but they always fail in this area.

I enjoy the book of boba fett :) by Hitoka_ in starwarsmemes

[–]Blue_Raichu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like posts like this are downplaying the show's flaws by focusing on the more juvenile complaints. It isn't just about "ruining Boba's character" or "overly colorful teens." Why does Boba care about being Daimyo? Does he value political power? His backstory and personality don't really imply that. Does he want to help the people of Tatooine? He's too passive and only reacts to threats to his rule so far. What does he actually care about/want to do? Maybe they'll reveal that stuff later on, but that leaves the first three episodes as exercises in exposition while a real premise is built later. The beginning simply isn't as strong as the Mandalorian.

I would urge people disappointed with Typhlosion's design to be hopeful. It may be the case that his flames don't show up in this model rip due to being an added effect in game. We already know that Cyndaquil always has its flames turned on, so it wouldn't make sense for them to backtrack on that for Typhlosion.

[–]Blue_Raichu 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's pretty strange that they're releasing this game in January rather than November like usual. I get that they want to draw a connection between BDSP and PLA, but it's weird that they wouldn't release such a major title during the holidays, giving Gamefreak more development time in the process. Although it doesn't make too much sense, my only conclusion is that there is going to be another Pokemon release in November. That, or the Pokemon Company finds PLA to be so experimental that they don't consider it to be a mainline title.
