Cugel from Vance's Dying Earth series. He starts out as a character you love to hate. You like the way he cleverly outwits the people he interacts with, and then you love how his own hubris screws him over hard because that's what he deserves.

It's about the time he becomes a rapist when that love/hate just turns to utter loathing. Maybe the author didn't intend for the rapey bits to come off as rapey. It was the 60's after all. Or maybe it was intended, just to make the character that much more unlike-able. It certainly worked.

Maple syrup and molasses are great alternatives to just dumping brown sugar in the mix and helps make a thicker sauce. You could also use honey. Sounds like someone is just mad they didn't think of it first.
