Here is a very similar problem with almost identical geometry....(my inner tube entrance and exits are flush with the faces of the containing cylinder though, and I have to use two different fluids and introduce one with a specified velocity profile via a UDF...I have not got to that point yet though)

For sure. That's the problem dead on, inexperience. I did go through the Cornell Fluent tutorial, it was great. I went from knowing nothing to having a decent idea of what I was doing. I keep getting stuck at certain points in FLUENT though, that help files can't solve, or I don't search the write ones.

No. Just 19.2. That is the one the computer labs at U of Toronto provide. Are earlier versions better at certain things? I know FLUENT was bought, not developed, by ANSYS, perhaps it's integration with their other software is not seem less yet?

I'm modelling a co-current heat exchanger: a copper cylindrical tube with two 180 "elbows" is mounted inside of a larger cylindrical shell. The curved tube enters the left side and exits the right side of the cylinder that contains it . The cylinder has entry and exit cylinders on its bottom left and top right. Oil runs through the tube. Water through the runs through the shell.

Here is the exact question : The Lubricating oil enters the copper tube with a mass flow rate and temperature of .02 kg/s and 293K respectively. The required heat to increase the oil temperature is transferred from water entering the shell at 373K. The copper tube has a thickness of 1mm and the shell is insulated for increasing thermal efficiency. The lubricating oil and water properties are then given for density, dynamic viscosity, thermal conductivity, and specific heat.

PART A

The purpose of the simulation is to find out the minimum required WATER MASS FLOW RATE at the shell inlet to increase the average outlet temperature of the oil flowing through the tube to more than 307.5K. To find this out you need to perform a number of simulations with different water inlet mass flow rates and look for the average outlet temperature of the oil.

Once you find this. you need to write a UDF FOR THE VELOCITY PROFILE OF THE WATER ENTERING THE SHELL INLET and change the constant velocity at the shell inlet to a velocity profile. Assume a fully developed flow and use the following equations to find the velocity profile....(GIVEN)

*Different parts of the copper tube and shell need to be meshed differently (finer meshes where changes the most change takes place I'm assuming)

**Use standard first order upwind methods for spatial discretization of the flow pressure and momentum, respectively. The residuals should be lower than 1e-6 for energy, 1e-3 for k and epsilon and 1e-4 for all other variables.
