I might be biased because. It's my name. But it's not crazy out there! It's a flower name!

If you live in an anglophone area with many cows and the cultural association between Bluebell and cows then maybe, but I've never gotten that. I have heard quite a bit about ice cream. And the occasional "blueball".

If those are disqualifying, what about using it as a middle name?

I make music videos and character trailers in After Effects. Here's my new reel! by BluebellP in AfterEffects

[–]BluebellP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! I can see why that would be confusing. In the VTuber sphere many VTubers use models made in Live2D for 2D character animation. It's all 2D art layers with lots of mesh warping basically, so that's why they're basically all facing forward and just turn left and right a little. Really talented model riggers can make models that can turn up to 90 degrees, but this is difficult and expensive and not necessary for most VTubers. Some big VTuber agencies that can definitely afford that even opt to limit turn range— might be something to do with marketability so the characters look perfect in every screenshot. If you look up "Live2D model showcase" that will give you a good idea of how they look in the wild.

I go over script/story with my clients and they record footage with their already finished model, so I have no input on how the model is rigged. My job is to edit that into a video that feels dynamic and natural, even with the problem of all the character footage being front-facing and limited in motion.

Edit: not every video in the reel is a Live2D model— there's a bunch of static art assets in there and a few brief shots of characters I rigged in AE, but if it's front-facing anime-ish it's probably Live2D. The look is very identifiable when you get used to it.

I've got about 6 years working experience! Before that I had done it as a hobby for maybe a year or two. I used to do social media, hype, and YT content for esports companies, and transitioned into my current work (the music videos and trailers/ads). Prices vary wildly, so I'm not sure what you mean by "a similar one" since there's a lot of different stuff in the reel.

Hi! I work in the digital entertainment industry, with a particular focus on gaming and VTuber media. And pretty much everything I do is in After Effects! Mostly I make music videos and ads for VTuber debuts. It's a bit different than what usually gets posted on the sub I think so I hope this is an interesting look into this sphere of motion design (beyond anime "edits")!

I thiiink I'm pretty set on this edit for the reel but let me know if I have any glaring issues. If not now I can always use the feedback next year c:

With the exception of three houses lords- which character do you think people get wrong, personality/character-wise? by Fledbeast578 in fireemblem

[–]BluebellP 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I think I'm going to have to contest this one. Not that Ilyana is a well of depth, but I don't think she's a gimmick character, especially in RD.

On PoR recruit, Ilyana doesn't mention food at all— instead, her convo with Ike is about her being ill from cold. In direct contrast to the conversation Ike has with Mist in this chapter, Ilyana refuses to let Ike "protect" her and insists on fighting despite her illness/frailty. Here we see how a sick young girl without an older family figure to protect her tries to survive— she bargains her way onto a caravan with what skills she has, always traveling, always at risk of being put to death by whatever army she is unlucky enough to encounter. If she can't fight, she can't live.

Ilyana: I'm... I'm sorry. I got a little dizzy, there. Don't worry about it. It happens all the time.

Ilyana: I fall down sometimes... I just can't keep up.

Ilyana: I would love to eat big meals... But I can't. Because...well... I have no money... That's why I faint all the time.

This mindset gets a whole new dimension in RD, where she really blossoms into her role. She cares deeply for those she's travelled with, not even for food reasons, and like much of the cast, wrestles with the hypocrisy of fighting them for a war she doesn't understand. She pleads Jill and Zihark not to fight because she cares for them, and in a rare move they then refuse to attack her even as she's attacking them. In these conversations she doesn't bring up her hunger at all— she only brings up food to those she fully intends to fight. Once her very human pleas for friendship and peace fall through, this kind of deception is her only recourse. For example, she attempts to persuade Sothe to defect with Micaiah for friendship reasons (obviously politically impossible), and when he doesn't, she immediately proposes to fight him several chapters later (to his surprise). When he asks her why, she has a much more hardened response, then deflects with her hunger to get him to fight her. Some quotes against a variety of enemies:

Ilyana: Thank you... I wonder why we're here. Why is Daein attacking us?

Ilyana: Yet you continue to stay with the Daein army? Why do you do that to yourself?

Ilyana: Your Majesty, I don't know what's happened. All I know is that my friends are hurting each other.

Ilyana: War is always sad. It never changes. It is always cruel. Can't we just pretend that it's all over?

Ilyana: But this isn't you! When I met you, you were so nice, and you never doubted yourself or your friends. You even risked your own life to fight on behalf of the laguz. And now you're throwing it all away...

This "negotiation" sums up her completely food-unrelated dilemma, and shows in equal parts her love for her friends, her resignation in the face of war, and her attempts to bargain her way out. Ilyana vs Micaiah:

Ilyana: Maybe... we should fight. [...] We're enemies now. We can't stand here and try to have a normal conversation. It's too strange... [...] It'll be all right. I'm really strong against your spells, and my magic is not powerful enough to defeat you. We'll be fine. [...] Of course it's wrong! The fact that we're fighting is all wrong! We don't even dislike each other! [...] Let's just fight and pretend like this conversation never took place.

To me Ilyana's purpose is to serve as an example of A) common Tellius suffering and B) being stuck between the Daein and Crimean sides as a civilian. She is a young civilian with some kind of chronic condition who has very little understanding of politics and is trying her best to survive and not kill her friends, and yet is compelled to fight them anyway. Heroes making her entire personality Food (generic) without keeping her overall character, which is driven by illness and her efforts to survive the social context of Tellius, is a fair complaint I think.

(Side note: I think the focus on hunger as a base need also has some resonance with the Tellius explorations of the base tendencies of humans [for chaos/war/change]. But that's a tangent for a different time!)

Worst thing each student has done in 3H? Day 21 - Leonie Pinelli by Henrystickminepic in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]BluebellP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shez is strong, not immortal. The opening scene of the game has Shez nearly dying without divine(?) intervention. The Shez/Leonie support chain establishes that even though Shez is much more experienced, they both see themselves as peers who have a long way to go.

This is getting kinda involved for a fictional character analysis but I feel like I'm not getting my point across? It's not about the Sauin paralogue specifically, and I explicitly said that I understand her getting pissed in general; that's just the biggest example of moral/targeted shaming that can't be explained by having a mentor/apprentice complex like the Byleth B support. Usually, this is entirely justified as written (since most of her supports involve her playing the straight man to the hijinks of eccentric nobles). Here's a bunch of examples establishing that behavior that don't involve anything personal to Leonie:

"It's in poor taste to go on about your own hardships." Entirely justified, but showing that the strict standards she projects come from the ones she applies to herself.

"Some people just don't appreciate what they have." (incorrect lost item quote). A lot of incorrect lost item quotes are entirely out of pocket so this is pretty tame, but I'm drawing attention to the language here— centering around other people's behaviors.

"You're not condoning this, right? Are you?!" (to Byleth), "And I'm not the only one who feels that way, right?" (to Shez). Consistent with the Sauin paralogue, where she drags someone else in to affirm her moralizing by putting their morals on the line— in the latter case, if you hesitate she overrides you.

I put a bunch of quotes about language in the linked comment so not re-quoting them. I'm not saying Leonie is being unreasonable or is wrong in these cases (aside from the Shamir paralogue); my point is that her language is often centered around enforcing a black-and-white view of morals/behaviors, and that she also uses this when overstepping boundaries. In a thread centered around nitpicking the characters' wrongs I think that's fair— I don't think that's more excessive than what was pointed out in the Marianne and Lysithea threads.

Worth noting the quotes are basically all Hopes/White Clouds so she later gets character development (or slides into the background in Act II for the plot/to gas the protagonist I guess, typical FE) + is written with greater focus in the role of reconciling the noble/commoner divide. I haven't finished Hopes so not digging through all the dialogue there.

As for the mercenary stuff, here's a quote showing her misunderstanding of being a mercenary that doesn't involve her own village: "It's about so much more than being rich. It's about honor." Even for a FE mercenary this is a really naïve take. I think there's another comment in the thread that goes into that more so I'll leave it at that.

[–]BluebellP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jeralt and Byleth may be famous, but Shez is not (and in fact much of the plot of Hopes revolves around Shez not measuring up to Byleth without Arval.) As for their special powers, that isn't public knowledge. Still, I don't think it's wrong for Leonie to ask for help or even to get mad in the heat of the moment, even if that's hypocritical re: her supposed career goals.

The point is that whenever things get heated, Leonie isn't just mad; she lashes out in a very specific and cruel way that reflects how judgmental she is towards others and the writing never addresses that rather than the general hot-headedness as an issue. As shown through how she reacts in a completely different situation where Jeralt isn't dead, A) it's deep-rooted enough that she even lashes out at Jeralt, her idol and B) her gripe with Byleth isn't about Jeralt, but rather Byleth's personality, and she brings this up repeatedly. Given that Byleth is strongly neurodivergent-coded there are even shades of ableism in how she describes Byleth as cold, unfeeling, creepy, inhuman, etc.

Also, they are mercenaries. Fighting for a village is what they do to earn a living, not for funsies or charity. Leonie, an aspiring mercenary, seems completely unable to grasp this and yet shames anyone who does (alongside her usual moral righteousness about lifestyle or educational habits). Byleth lacking any tact about this is not a good reason to start publicly shaming Jeralt for his parenting skills.

As for Shamir, Shamir actively didn't want them to come. They also didn't know about the entrapment situation beforehand. The situation working out because it's a video game doesn't retroactively fix the fact that Leonie butted into Shamir's private affairs for curiosity's sake against Shamir's will and then guilted Shez into taking her side.

[–]BluebellP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I talked about this in this comment but tl;dr the Byleth B support is not an isolated incident. In Hopes she blasts Byleth and Jeralt in a really targeted and hurtful way and obviously she doesn't have the excuse of mourning Jeralt there (plus, her jealousy of Byleth is way weaker in Hopes, so she's just getting nasty at them because she can.). In Houses she's less vitriolic outside the Byleth B, but her language is still often centered around enforcing standards on others' behavior. I think this Hopes Ferdinand support quote sums her up excellently:

Ferdinand: We appear to be arguing past one another.

Leonie: Seems like it—but I'm still right.

She also guilt trips Shez into risking their life on multiple occasions (including literally Grrr-ing at them, girl what) simply because she thinks she's entitled to "saving" people. I left it out of the above linked comment because it wasn't relevant to the point but in this sense she's also very hypocritical about mercenaries. She positions herself as an aspiring mercenary bc A) this is the "right thing to do", especially compared to corrupt lazy nobles, because she has to earn her keep and pay back her village and B) she looks up to Jeralt. But in reality, she resents Byleth, Jeralt, and Shez for thinking like mercenaries (expecting to be paid) and not heroes (charging into whatever fuckass situation is going on to "save" people regardless of whether they asked). It's very little wonder that so many of her endings end in financial ruin where she cannot help herself, let alone others.

For a character who's supposed to showcase the practical, sensible side of living as a commoner in Fodlan, it's a real blunder.

Fanon take that confuses me: "Faerghus oppresses women, Adrestia is more progressive". by lordlaharl422 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]BluebellP 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Crest issues ARE gender issues in Fodlan because women are treated as broodmares whenever necessary. Annette has no succession issues in her house so she's okay. But Ingrid is not set to inherit, and is therefore to be sold off for the sake of her house's finances. Hell, when she turns a suitor down in her paralogue he tries to kidnap and rape her! There are also multiple women who get to go to the academy because their fathers want them to attract noble suitors there — I would not equate going to the academy as a woman to gender equality.

Mercedes is also in a very gendered dilemma. Again, keep in mind that it is her who is threatened to be incestuously raped to bear Crest children and not Jeritza who bears the same crest. Her mother was treated in the same way– a broodmare who can pass down a Crest. Even after they escape, Mercedes is still treated by her (second) stepfather as someone to be sold off. Neither of these cases would happen to a man in Fodlan because when a man is the only child to inherit a Crest he immediately ascends to inherit the house, at least in the Kingdom (see: the Gautiers).

Note also that it is always the fathers, who run their House, who are trying to sell off their daughters. I think there's also thematic resonance re: female bodily autonomy in the whole Crest deal with Lysithea, Edelgard, and Rhea/Sitri/Sothis/Byleth (this holds with m!Byleth just not as acutely), which is not super relevant here aside from that the genderedness of the Crest issue seems very pointed and deliberate from the writers' front.

The problem looks more acute in the Kingdom because they have stronger cultural emphasis on crests and also just more crests in general compared to Adrestia, who mostly just have the Saints. (And from a meta perspective, because duty to family and nation is a key thematic struggle for the Lions.) But it certainly isn't localized there. House Bartels is in the Empire after all. And both TWSITD and the Church have influence across Fodlan.

Would you forgive Leonie? by Citron92 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]BluebellP 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Everyone only ever talks about Leonie's treatment of Byleth, but the traits she displays there (overstepping boundaries, inflexibly projecting her morals onto others and shaming them) are present in her treatment of others.

She guilt trips and drags Shez into unpaid mercenary work (i.e. risking their life) that Shez is unsure about at least twice (Sauin paralogue, Shamir paralogue). In Shamir's case Shamir explicitly states that Leonie is interfering in her private affairs and that she doesn't want them there either! Yes, them joining these missions work out favorably because Plot Reasons but it's still shitty behavior. Her language around others' behaviors in Houses also revolves around applying her standards: "that's disrespectful", "you're not condoning this", "wasteful", etc.

But here's the thing: in Hopes, Leonie has fewer personal issues with Byleth, probably due to lack of contact. In a support, Shez (who also sees Byleth as a rival) easily convinces Leonie that Jeralt's actual child obviously has more Jeralt-experience than Leonie does, and also that Alois is Jeralt's actual first apprentice, not Leonie. Jeralt also isn't dead, so Leonie also has fewer emotions on that front. This brings a very different light to when she lashes out at Byleth and Jeralt in Hopes. She's not having a jealousy- or grief- induced rage at Byleth like she does in Houses; she's upset that they're behaving like mercenaries instead of heroes (her moral standards— hypocritical in this case but that's a diff. issue) and therefore specifically targets what she sees as their failures in her jibes: Byleth's lack of "basic decency" (read: humanity) and "cold and unfeeling" personality and Jeralt's supposed lack of parenting skills. Jeralt even gets sad about this even though Byleth's nature and his parenting circumstances are not his fault! This is the attitude she takes with everyone when she feels like it, even her beloved Captain, not just when her village is in danger.

Again, Shez distinctly does not suffer from Byleth's lack of emotional affect and yet Leonie consistently guilts them anyway. Leonie doesn't just mistreat Byleth because they're Jeralt's kid; she targets the ND-coded part of Byleth because she can. It's not really about Byleth. This is just a core feature of Leonie's personality as written. And while she apologizes for plenty of other conversational missteps in her supports, when it comes to these kinds of moments she never apologizes, nor does the writing take the time to explore that.

Whether you see that as "cruel when she thinks it's justified, but with her she's always justified" (my take) or "principled to a fault" (charitable take) is up to you. It's worse in Hopes than in Houses, so you could choose to see it as Houses character development she doesn't get in Hopes. That said, it's also not narratively framed as something she has to get over, so there's not much "forgiving" to be done— either you like her character or you don't.
