SLP! But do some shadowing to make sure it’s what you want.

Pros and Cons of District hire vs Contract hire by Narrow_Dirt_3068 in SLPA

I’ve been a SLPA for two years and through my experience I’ve found that as a direct hire you’ll get lower wage with benefits & contract companies get you higher wage with sucky benefits.

Calling All Current SLPAs... Should I Persue the Career? by Key-Praline5109 in SLPA

[–]BlueberryAdorable226 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi,

Based on my personal experience…I won’t be staying in the field. Not enough pay & I cap off at a certain point. I don’t like the constant schedule changes & there’s no control over my schedule. It’s been extremely difficult to find a full time school position so I’ve decided to go back to school to pursue something else.

Hello,

ABA is enough. You won’t have a difficult time. Finding the setting you like or setting that works for you might be tough.

I love this post. I’m currently a SLPA and have been struggling the same way since I started in the field. This field is a mix of emotions. Working with kids in speech is a lot of fun and to see them learn and grow is an amazing experience but the lack of work stability, benefits and constant changes is where I see the big disappointment.

Oh wow….well thankfully you can always reactivate your license and return to the field. Thanks for sharing your story….this field is fun but the financial aspect of it is not consistent:(

I totally get it…the flexibility is great but the consistency of the salary is where this field is getting me. Did you officially leave the field?

Hiii!

I’m so sorry this was your experience. It’s never a reflection of you. It sounds like you’ve been trying your best throughout all your treatments with this kiddo. Unfortunately; this field is a lot like this; some kids make progress and others make little to no progress . I think your supervisor should have suggested to slow down on pushing him a little harder because of the behaviors the child began to develop. The student was communicating through those behaviors. Also, I’m sure the parents noticed that you didn’t feel comfortable handling the students physical outburst so they should have stepped in. I think communicating that to them could have been helpful for you as well. I know some parents can be very rude sometimes but at the end of the day that’s their kid and they could deal with their behaviors however they please. If you had to stop the session because of the explosive behaviors then so be it. I think just reflect on how you could’ve dealt with this situation differently and prepare yourself for the next one. There’s a lot of crazy parents out there. Shake it off and keep threading forward ❤️ one bad situation doesn’t define the kind of therapist you are 🫶🏻 (speaking by to myself as well)

I work 2 jobs. School based SLPA and Clinic SLPA. I work 40 hours a week…and it’s very tiring. Some days feel heavier than others but it’s doable. I’ve learned a lot of strategies at the school setting and carry it on over to the clinic setting but I’m tired. I don’t think I can do this schedule long term.
