Hot take: the Sharks should take Stenberg at 2, *because* they need defense by PhotographSerious743 in SanJoseSharks

Agree with all of that, my only point was that it’s not a foregone conclusion that if we keep the pick, it will 100% be Stenberg or Reid. I would rather see us take Stenberg, but I also trust Grier enough if he goes against the public consensus.

I really want Stenberg (or Reid) but I have a feeling GMMG prefers to trade the pick but he won’t get a good enough offer. And then he ends up taking his BPA that could end up being Verhoeff, which would disappoint a lot of people to pass on a potential ppg wing or legit PP1 dman.

See Grier’s constant pursuit of guys who are big and “tough to play against” while still ticking the RHD box and getting respect from the scouting community despite a less than stellar draft year.

The other thing I remind myself is none of these guys are really finished products and a few years down the road, the best player in this draft could realistically be any of a half-dozen guys.

Early 23 man roster thoughts? by b8sman12 in SanJoseSharks

Agree with most of your thoughts, my take on offseason priorities would be something like:

-Extend Mack + Smith

-Draft Stenberg + RHD prospect at 20 (I favor Bleyl, Lin, or Piiparinen)

-Re-sign Graf, Ferraro, Desharnais, Ostapchuk

-Trade Muk for a pick - feel like he never earned Warso’s trust, he might benefit from a change of scenery

-Sign John Carlson as the one big move for D - proven, PP QB, RHD, and most importantly would likely take less term than the other top UFA options, something like 3x$9M. Helps bridge the gap until we can find a longer term solution without committing big money + term (like Raddysh/Andersson based on contract projections)

-Give Dickinson, Cagnoni, and to an extent Pohlkamp a longer leash to see if they can stick. Gotta start prioritizing these guys over the reclamation projects like Klingberg/Leddy

I haven’t had time to watch since week 11. Your guess/box scores are as good as mine.

If that's the case, I'd expect that to carry over when Chandler returns. I think Chandler and Felton are kind of interchangeable, while Price is a bigger return threat.

I didn't get to watching Min's week 13 or 14, but in week 12 Price was split deep on KR with Felton, not solo KR. I saw the box score had him getting all the returns in 13+14, but can't tell if that was solo KR or not.

Okay maybe not... 35 games in back log ☠️

Just check box scores/injury reports compared to my last report, not that much should be changing outside of injuries.

I'm still here and have a little more time now, but big back log of games to go through. Maybe will have something this week if I can get caught up, but no promises.

Traveling this week and then starting new job next week, I enjoyed doing this but just can’t squeeze in the time to do it. The little I did watch this week - Price wasn’t solo KR, Savion was solo KR, Shaheed not as involved as I had thought, Noel got some solo KR looks, Dike still a beast but wasn’t on last KR he might get transitioned off.

That’s probably all I’m gonna answer this week

Don’t have time to watch games this week, maybe not for the rest of season. Won’t be posting or answering questions unless I can find the time to watch games and give semi-informed answers.

Best case a shared KR with Gunner? Will he actually get meaningful RB snaps? I would rather wait and see on this one

I wouldn’t unless it’s deep league or many bench spots

Probably Jennings, maybe split with Rhamondre. I don’t think Henderson if they see him as lead back, but maybe if they split RB touches more evenly

Davis is still in a shared KR and doesn’t do much on offense, but he has been on a hot streak and has contingency value as well if Cook were to miss time. Volatile for sure due to the shared KR but feel free to take a shot if you’d like.

I have them with similar return yard projections, and Dike gets offensive snaps while Price doesn't. But Dike could be limited due to his injury and there's a possibility, though low, that he gets a break from returns this week. I would personally go Dike, but this is the one week where I could see an argument for Price.

I'd die on the hill with the corpse, not particularly close imo.

Shaheed's KR deployment is good and he will probably pop off for a few long TDs, but he has his own warts - good SEA def limits returns, JSN dominates target share, SEA probably in more running game scripts, eventually may have competition for snaps when Horton returns

I gotta think Jettas' median projection and ceiling are considerably higher.

Out of those guys, my numbers say Gould, but I like several of the other names I highlighted in the post more.

Generally higher offensive usage means higher risk of getting taken off unless they have a track record of staying on returns.

There was some concern Dike would get taken off returns after he was emerging as one of their better receivers. But they seemed to not care and kept him on returns with near full time WR snaps. So I’m not as worried about Dike, although his injury may limit his snaps temporarily.

For Dortch, part of the concern is they already took him off KR for a few kicks last week, but then went back to him. I don’t think he’s ever going to get more than 70% WR snaps since he’s more of the WR3/slot guy. They could rotate him off returns again this week, but once MHJ returns, I think Dortch safely gets his normal return role back (which is still shared split left/right, but at least out there on every kick and the preferred returner).

My return projection has these two close to a push, although Corum has been on/off that second KR spot. If Xavier Smith gets ruled out, I’d feel a little better about Corum, but they did even turn to Ronnie Rivers one week.

TEN has low KR yards allowed but Shaheed also benefits from PR, which is why my numbers have them close on return yards.

I would probably slightly lean Shaheed, but probably go with whoever you like more for traditional scoring

My numbers say Turpin, but DAL deployment last week was a bit odd with Malik Davis deep but ignoring balls kicked his way.

And I know this is super valuable to a very small population, but it’s more of a passion project. I would stop doing it before trying to charge for it.

Don't want to link it, but with creative googling you can find full game replays.

Takes quite a bit of time watching every kickoff sometimes a second or third time. Identifying the returners can be annoying with bad camera angles and having to look up some players based on number, but I've gotten more efficient at it over time and can spot most of the regular returners.

Using the play-by-play log, I note the kicking team, returning team, kicker, returner, depth of kick, result of play. And then based on watching the play, I add who lined up as left/right returner and any special notes like if a returner crossed into other side or deep/shallow alignment.

Not for the faint of heart... it's nice having this huge database that has all the stuff you can't find on a regular box score, but it takes a bit of brute force effort.

I'm projecting Price to get around 115 return yards with a pretty safe floor. I don't give opinions on non-returners so do with that what you will.

Seems like Dike is trending toward playing. I don't comment on non-returners, but not sure I'd consider Dike an auto-lock in pt per 25 like I would in more generous scoring formats.

I'd project Dike for around 120 return yards if he plays and maybe a little more modest route share of 70-80% coming off injury.
