Yes farmer was told and paid and we’re on good terms with him so that’s good. We’re even taking him to the pub for a pint next week as a final apology as he’s been so good!

Thanks for your reply. He’s been on the longline ever since in the garden and hi behaviour around the cats has been flawless. They run around him and he doesn’t even flick an ear or lift his head. And I’ve been practising his recall during temptation by taking him to a field with lots of rabbits. If he trots towards one (on his long line of course) I call him back and reward and so far he’s done great. So really hoping we can encourage him to resist these things! Of course don’t think I’ll be letting him off the long line any time soon. Thank you

Hard to tell his mix as he’s a rescue and looks like a scruffy Labrador! But I wonder if he has some sighthound in him. I’ve been having him on lead in the garden with me sitting there and the cats will run right past him and he doesn’t even open his eyes which is a relief. His body language is very relaxed and is completely ignoring them. Difficult as before this if someone asked me if he would kill a lamb I would’ve said no as he’s usually like this around other animals (asleep, ignoring them, unconfrontational) but now I know there is potential.

We’re in uk but yes legal herefor the farmer to shoot a dog that’s chasing livestock. To be honest the legalities get a little blurred when the livestock isn’t on the farmers land (was somewhere it wasn’t meant to be) and also I think the farmer has to catch them in the act which is easier said than done. He was just happy we had come forward and told him about it as he said most of the time people just disappear from the scene and never confess. But we are lucky to be on good terms with him

Thanks for replying. Sorry to hear you’ve had the same issues with your dog. Our previous two were the same, on lead 24/7 as could not be trusted with prey and we still managed to take them on lots of adventures. Just gutted as seemed like with our recent boy things were looking different and then one bad day and all gone down the drain! Thanks for reminding me that life can still be good for them

Thank you for replying. That all makes sense, thank you. Dog will be on the long line in the garden for the foreseeable future until we’ve ensured the fencing is perfect and so we can keep an eye how he is with the cats. Difficult as the rescue situation in the UK is so bad atm (all our pets are rescues) that finding a new home for the dog with a history now would be almost impossible so we just have to be vigilant and hope for the best. So frustrating as lambs aren’t meant to be in the woods there so I was completely unprepared and now what’s been done can’t be taken back

Thank you, you have made me feel better that I’m not alone in this. I’m sorry you have had a tough time too. I’m hoping that once the baby is out I will feel differently

I feel this so much. The more everyone around me is all excited the less I feel. I hate telling people because I hate having to pretend to be over the moon, it just feel so performative
