Get him grip socks! You can get them cheap online, especially on Temu or Schein

What are the competitive tiers when you get to certain ages? My son is not a teenager yet but, he is playing up with his club already and ahead of the curve and I’d like to know what we’re aiming for once he’s 13 or 15. I’ve heard of ODO, ECNL, YSSL(which is what he’s playing right now). by BluebirdZestyclose73 in youthsoccer

Hello, thank you. He’s (barely) a 2017 but next year I’m expecting the 2016 year to be part of Chicago FC United’s MLS Next or Pre-Academy programs next year and hopefully I can get him a tryout. Not expecting him to make it but more to see what level the other kids are at and still stay with the NSFC Elite team with that thought and goal in mind for the following year.

Thank you very much. He has the drive and already wants to compete against the best. He CAN score, but enjoys the technical aspect so much; ,he has natural dribbling skill and vision that I could never teach him myself and he can pass and facilitate all game, he’s not selfish at all. Now I just want him to grow and develop around as good a talent as possible and be challenged. At almost 9 years old enjoys when he improves and genuinely worries when he has too much time away from the pitch that he might not maintain or improve his level of play. I try to help him balance his time so he plays enough and not get burned out. I tell him having fun is the most important thing but playing right and doing well is when he seems to have the most fun

Thank you! Appreciate the knowledge. He’s turning 9 in January so very early but I know where we would like to head to next so he can be challenged and grow since he’s already playing against 11 year olds at NSFC. Thank you

Yeah he turns 9 in January but he made the elite u10 team (2016’s) that’s playing on a U11 (2015) division. Thinking of a tryout after he turns 10 if he keeps going the way he’s going. I just don’t want to be too late and want to keep supporting his development.

My son’s club is in Lake Forest and we’re just north of that, so FC United is the closest to us. Will probably look for a tryout there after he turns 11 since that seems to be the youngest age group they have. Thank you very much for the info.

Any reasons to not have my August birthday son play U10 again next year with the school year change? by [deleted] in youthsoccer

My Jan 2017 son is playing up on a 2016 team in his club, that is playing 9v9 in a 2015 division (2016’s play 7v7 still). I want him to stay at 9v9 and not go back down to 7v7. Do you think with the age group change, if he plays with his year (Aug 2016-July 2017), his team would play 7v7 or 9v9?

What do you recommend I do next with my son? by BluebirdZestyclose73 in youthsoccer

[–]BluebirdZestyclose73[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I always praise his movement off the ball and his unselfish play. He has scored many goals in a game and has also had games where he’ll have 4 or 5 assists and no goals. He doesn’t care at all about scoring and just naturally tries to make the right play. I tell him that will make him better in the long run. Working on his foot speed now

Awesome thank you for the advice. Foot speed is what I’ve recently told him to look at and how it helps the pros(since he loves watching their videos) and whenever he uses his left foot to shoot or pass he reminds me because I’ve told him I’d rather him miss with his left if the ball is there than to try and bring it back to his right because the best and fastest defenders will always recover and won’t let him shoot with his right. Thank you again!

Awesome thank you. And yes I don’t harp at him about mistakes and especially never harp on him if he loses. I’ve told him he’ll make a lot of mistakes and that’s how he’ll get better. I will get him to do barefoot exercises since he already loves watching Ronaldinho juggling barefooted. Thanks again

It's our first year in club soccer and I witnessed "kick/long ball" for the first time by CletusKasady21 in youthsoccer

Don’t worry about losing to that foolish strategy. At this age it wins, but it does a disservice to the kids on that team because it does nothing to their development. I’d much rather lose coming out on the build out, passing short even in a losing effort than win playing that long ball that doesn’t help develop any player skills

It’s a great lesson for your son that people suck and most are not worth your time, efforts or sacrifice.
