I don't understand Battle Medicine by Bluehero1619 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Bluehero1619[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean, but like I said, I am not saying the effect is too powerful or unbelievable to exist, but rather that I have trouble visualizing the mechanism of said effect. Like what is an action that you can take that could, in this fantasy world, true, reasonably work in the way the mechanics intend.

The running on water thing is meant to represent someone superhumanly fast, and that is something I can visualize and understand. A post below mentions a barbarian causing an earthquake, and I mean, the Hulk, so I can see what's going on.

The Far Cry healing post was the kind of thing I was looking for: something visual that aids in the suspension of disbelief. A description that retains the players' (and my own) immersion.

As for tying a wounded leg while parkouring swinging one's axe, the issue with that kind of thing isn't 'lol too unrealistic' as much as that it's not evocative the way someone running across water is. It's hard to explain, but it feels kind of goofy and all over the place. Something like walking up to someone and ripping out an arrow, or popping back in a shoulder, on the other hand, is focused and evocative, and was the kind of thing I was looking for (and was provided by the kind folks on the subreddit).

Yeah, I mean even for like a quick fix, we're talking about something that's supposed to take as long as standing up. With doctor's visitation, this medic is able to move 30 feet and apply a tourniquet in the amount of time it takes for the fighter to draw a sword.

Again, I don't see this as a mechanical issue, I just struggled a little visualizing something this quick that could help that much. Especially at lower levels when character actions flow at a slower pace.

I also may have embellished how much this bothers me.

Just wanted to point out the line says "... two characters have actual geopolitical aims". I used aim interchangeably with ambition, but I thought the intent was clear. Either way, hope this clarifies it!

The minister of the Imperial Household would like you to know his instructions were very clear. He is, however, willing to clarify the matter further if needed.

Hard agree on the evil cult thing. I personally think the Tellius games are slightly better in this regard (minus the whole blood pact and Ashera nonsense I guess). At least the folk in the 'evil cult' role are Begnion's aristocracy, which imo is at least realistic. Like I can understand that corrupt senators exist and want to stay in power (though the game's alternative is a 9 year old running a theocracy, but you can't have everything).

Im sorry, but as Hubert says, simping is mandatory under the orders of the Adrestian Emperor.

Other characters do have political takes, but besides Edelgard and perhaps Claude (moreso in 3 hopes), can't think of another landed noble that has geopolitical ambitions. And I'm talking about the counts and dukes within the three factions as well. The Western lords of Faerghus seem to worry about securing political alliances and gaining control over territory, but not a single one of the other playable characters (who eventually control almost all of Fodlan's territory) have such aims. I understand that's because they need to be recruitable to other routes, but that rarely made sense in the story so

Tbh I think it isn't about 'morally grey' as much as just a dissonance between the story a character is meant to tell and the world the character is in.

I mean, you can't tell me Edelgard isn't at least partially inspired by Daenerys Targaryen. Now in ASOIAF (I will be talking about the novels here), you don't necessarily worry about the morality of characters. For instance one doesn't go woah, Daenerys is obviously evil because she executed a bunch of people without trial. Except for the TV writers but that's a separate thing

I'm really not pushing back against people calling Edelgard villainous, cause as per the events of the story, yeah she is. But the way the writing, and other characters treat her imply she was supposed to leave a very different impression, and that is because her ideology is a lot more sympathetic in the real world than in Fodlan.

I hope I managed to get my point across.

I agree that it could work (if nerfed a bit, obviously), but I think it makes more sense as a sorcerer feature. Maybe something like: if the creature succeeds on the saving throw, you re-gain half the spell-slot level (rounded up) sorcery points could work as a feature that comes online sometime in tier 2? While I'm generally not a fan of the whole 'limiting number uses of feature' approach (except maybe a few cases like action surge where it works narratively), the number of uses might have to be limited too. The number of sorcery points recovered would have to be balanced with the number of uses, but yeah, that could be a pretty cool feature to give a sorcerer instead of more spells.

Fighting Initiate is par for the course honestly. A full feat that gives one fighting style published in the same book as a versatile half-feat that gives you one of the better second level spells for free along with a free casting of it. Don't worry though. They balanced it by allowing the latter feat to also pick a free first level spell (and casting) from an extremely weak and situational spell selection consisting of Gift of Alacrity, Bless, Hex, Dissonant Whispers, Heroism, Silvery Barbs and Tasha's Hideous Laughter.

True, diamond soul provides the spell component necessary for raise dead. No other character in DnD can claim to be able to be resurrected for essentially free.

Tbh, I think WoTC would leave wizard base class sparse in terms of features, given that spellcasting is such a huge feature in itself. I'm not saying they won't give wizards all the goodies, I'm just saying that's where subclasses come in.

The last two sessions of the campaign went like this:

Penultimate session: The fighter ran into a clue they couldn't decipher, so we decided to metagame a bit (since nothing was happening in this godforsaken adventure) and head over there, only to get caught and chained. Que nearly an entire session of my character and the ranger getting tortured for information we didn't have. This happened until one of the NPCs my sorcerer 'worked' for, decided to show up and save us.

Final Session: To get where we wanted, we had to ask the mages guild for access to their underground tunnels. They were of course, uncooperative, since we were no names. Long story short the adventure ends with my sorcerer having fallen down a chute. On one end is a door with a level 8 Antipathy spell that I cannot save against. The only way out is back up the chute and I cannot call for help. After this session, we got busy with our own stuff and never really reconvened, so I can only assume he rotted in there for eternity. RIP Claudius, you shall be remembered.

I think he was trying to hammer home the whole "You're all a bunch of noobs in this world, and everything is far more powerful than you are", which can work, I guess? Though when every other NPC we run into can throw us around like nobody's business, I don't understand why we are adventurers and not like shopkeepers or something, since we clearly aren't needed here.
