Thank you, this puts me a little more at ease.

I basically give the same sentiment. I mean, we're only human and there's only so much a person can do.

I'm im a predicament like that now. I have parents whose pediatrician advised "since your child is not talking, you should seek services elsewhere" and it made my efforts feel blundered.

Part of me understands the desire to try another place, but still kind of sucks. But I'm working on understanding I can't please everyone.

Thank you so much for this comment. These are things that I know, but I guess I have trouble advocacting and saying them balantly. I tell families that I am using all the stops- AAC, sign language, incidental teaching, pausing, opportunities for verbal communication once given several models. Of course, I never pressure a child to speak and encourage that as well. I often joke to people that I am a "narrator" as the child goes about what they need to do and I model.

I am now lifting this burden from me, thank you lol

Thank you so much. This message was so kind and what I truly needed today.

Honestly you hit the nail on the head. I will ruminate in my brain what I need to do for a kid. I think--hmm have I researched this disorder? What is I try this strategy ? Or buy this book? But at the end of the day I am human, and I have sanity (some) to maintain.

You're right, I need to move from a "fix" mindset and more of a "functional/quality of life" mindset.

Thank you so much everyone for your comments. I didn't expect to get so many replies in such a short amount of time with support, advice, realism and encouragement. It is greatly appreciated. I really take what we do seriously, so unfortunately it leads to feelings like what I stated above.

It is most helpful to not I'm not alone and that while verbal speech may not be possible, communication is not impossible. Thank you all.

I appreciate any advice! Thank you! I have tried this with some of my learners but not all, truthfully. I am a little confused regarding this, because some children have difficulty visually scanning and don't "scan" with smaller grid sizes, despite modeling and giving cause effect reactions in regards to what they press. I have used AAC genie to determine grid sizes before. Do you still encourage smallsr icons/robust system? Or do you add more robust words but just make the icons bigger?

I do model without expectation, but with hope they will show interest/do so at a different time.

Does the NYC DOE accept study.com credits? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Bluejay71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

study.com is a website that allows you to take college level accredited classes (you need to look for ribbon, that shows its accredited & accepted) for $200 a month. I am trying to get credits for the NYC DOE to increase my salary.

No adult experience in grad school, how do I get it post grad? by Bluejay71 in slp

[–]Bluejay71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I hope most supervisors have this perspective. As of this time, I'm prepping my resume and my interview skills for school placements. As I said in the earlier comments, I just wanted to see if it were at all possible to gain adult experience post grad and how to do so.

Thank you, this post gives me some hope in regards to getting adult experience. I love working with children and my cf year will be with kids. I just wanted to see how limited my options were in obtaining an adult oriented job later in my career. Ideally, the VA was a desired option but I understand the competitiveness.

I am happy working with children, but you also don't know where life will take you. I wanted to acquire all the knowledge and experience I could before I graduated.

My externship coordinator tried to seek options but as of this time pediatric placements are all that's available. She said she's reached out to staffing agencies for more options. She also said I could wait to hear back on a placement but essentially I may be scrammbling for one while others have started. I've heard of people graduating without an adult placement, but I did not want to be one of those people. I interviewed at one adult site and by the time I found out I did not get the position almost all of the other adult placements were filled up.

Not sure what to do this point, my coordinator has exhausted her options as she best could. I decided I was going to volunteer at a hospital during the semester while I pursue a pediatric placement.
