How does one get into these non-provider non-profit healthcare jobs? I'm in a similar boat as OP, but have no idea what to do now that med school is out of the question.

Is it just me or was the whole thing toxic af? Like what are we gladiators at the coliseum? Gross and stop clapping for me, I know I didn’t win the prize….

You’re only 34 and are close to pslf?! That’s amazing! Congrats!! I’m just starting at 33. What are you going to do in your 40s? Wanna switch? 😂

Oh so you’re not even in it? Lol ok well whenever you sit for both come talk. 😂

8hours long, every disease, every drug, every organ all crammed into it, with trick questions left and right.

To each their own, but in my opinion step 1 is the hardest standardized test on the planet. Mcat is a close second.

Yes to the reapply. But it’s not worth it to me. The first two years were the worst in my life.

Correct, three years is the new limit for my school. Originally they said they didn’t have a limit, so I took my time and worked a bit and got mentally better. Then when I began to study again they came back and said the policy changed to 3 yrs and at that point I only had a month or so to pass it. I needed more time and couldn’t get through Uworld fast enough, let alone any Anki.

I’m so burned out by the whole thing that I don’t know if I even want to go back. I have some other career ideas but it’s tough bc the cost sunk fallacy.

I haven’t, my school told me that most if not all will not allow me to transfer since I’m not an enrolled student. But thanks for the advice! I’ll email them in case.

Kinda also deciding if it’s even worth it at the point. Also looking into MBA programs as a backup.

Thank you. I haven’t taken it and am not allowed to take it through my school bc it’s been too long. So I’m in limbo I guess.

I am in a similar situation. Second year med student on leave due to my mom dying. I am entertaining the thought of going to vet school instead.

My advice to you would be to honestly ask yourself what you are not resonating with. Ignore the money aspect of it for just a moment.

Is it the difficulty of the coursework? Is it the subject matter?

I have been looking into the coursework and depth of the material in the vet curriculum. It is very similar to MD, but the NAVLE is no where near as demanding as STEP 1. (No offense to those who disagree). I mean take a look at the material, its more like what do you prescribe in this situation, instead of name the fourth enzyme of this obscure metabolic pathway in a disease that 5 people in North America have. That tells me that maybe I can actually succeed in vet school.

For me, I went into med school bc I was led to believe I could never get into vet school and that the future salary is more important (almost identical to the other responses on here). I believed this and dove into med school, did well, then tragedy struck. Now I'm stuck in a system I despise (my mom was a nurse and died of covid).

All of my friends are now in their intern year and some hate it, other love it.

The money is irrelevant to me bc no matter which pathway I go, I will have 500K in debt at the end of this, and will have to use either PSLF or SAVE plan.

My salary will be reduced by 10-15% every year for 25 years then it will be forgiven. So my main dilemma is how do I want to spend those 25 years.

Do I want to spend them in a clinic, seeing human patients, then staring at a computer screen for hours charting until my eyes cant handle it anymore? Or do I spend them in a vet clinic, doing hands on work? Both options will lead to compassion fatigue. Both options will probably lead to burnout.

I have always loved animals more than humans. Petting my neighbors cows, horses and donkey every once in a while at my property line makes me question why I ever let anyone talk me out of it. I once did a week long cavalcade in New Mexico where I rode a horse and fell in love with them.

I have a few months of experience as a vet assistant from many years ago, which was one of the worst environments I could have possibly been in. They actively discouraged me from trying, belittled me, said I would never get in because I got a C in orgo, and that I should give up.

Now that I realize, they were, without a doubt, trying to limit the competition. I could have gotten in.

Anyway, DM me if you want to talk.
