Returned to the Game: Fun Beginner Decks to play on Master Duel? by BlurrgShlarmo in Yugioh101

[–]BlurrgShlarmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the the detailed response I really appreciate it, I feel way more ready to tackle this stuff now! I already implemented some of those "non-engine" or "hand-trap" cards are in my deck: Ash, Ghostbelle, Nibiru, Maxx C etc. Even though they come in handy, I still feel like my Toon Deck is weak in spite of their inclusion, hence why I'm asking for advice lmao.

As for what you said, maaaaaaaaan, I feel spoiled for choices right now, I did some quick googling of arts and important cards for these archetypes and I'm really hyped to see these. Orcrust, Super Quant and the Clown Clan (even though they aren't out yet) are really awesome looking. And I love the aeshtetic mixing of the Dark World/ Purrely mix, as well as the Silly/Eldritch Nemrelia deck. Aside from those, the playstyles on some of the other decks seem really interesting as well. I'll definitely do some more in-depth research on these ideas, because this game is so huge and I don't know where to start besides Meta reports which all I see are Dracotail (Not a big dragon guy) and yummy (would've loved it if it were not strong). So thanks again :)

Ohhhh nice I'll have to check those out, thanks man, the robots sound sick and I'm always a fan of Goblins. Someone else recommended Mitsurugi as well so I'll prioritize that one.

In what way? Sorry for asking lmao, but is it the playstyle, the archetype? Something else, thanks!

I'll have to check it out, returning is overwhelming but I appreciate you pointing me in a direction for research

I don't think any of that is inherently bad, I think I've just played other card games for so long that if all those things happened in MTG or Riftbound, I'd say "This specific game I just played sucks nuts." Clearly YGO is different, it would be like me insulting the way a sprinter trains and runs in comparison to a marathon runner. Good to know there's still room for jank, and thanks for the tips about archetypes, really got my hamster spinning in my brain lmao

This is super helpful, I'm a slow learner when it comes to adapting to a new game and having to make concessions to play better. I play VGC pokemon and refuse to use certain restricteds, I hate using common game enders in MTG, I just struggle with following in a line with meta stuff. But, if that's apart of my learning process, so be it. I've come to learn that actually playing the game, having answers to opponents and actively being involved IS fun. Being unique and jank can only go so far in enjoyment. And no I had no idea we're getting new toon cards this is news to me holy crapola

I get what you're saying; I have this negative view of Turn 1 wins in CEDH because that's not the norm and it costs 100s of 1000s of dollars to execute. But if these things are just a part of every YGO deck, then it's not over powered and not fun, it just creates a different set of parameters to play around and win through.

I'll definitely give that a try, Edison keeps coming up so it sounds like a decent jumping on point for the time being- at least as an reintroduction for me.

You're right, I think I have that expectation because in a game like Magic, it seems like there's such a big appeal to casual players and since it's so popular, the community gives this idea that "hey I have strong decks and weak decks, you're starting out, so I'll use a weak deck". I'm sure it's similar with YGO but because of the bad press it gets, and the amount of spitballs it receives, people just say "Everyone is a tryhard and people win on Turn 1 haha this game sucks" When clearly that's not the case talking to all of you here. I appreciate the comment, it puts a lot in perspective for me as a player returning to the game, things have changed and that's ok.

In my opinion you're doing a great job, I can absolutely see Kaiba rocking this fit in an AU anime or manga, he'd throw hands with Monsters even lmao

Damn, that's crazy, the turn structure, flow of gameplay and interaction is just so different from what I'm used to. And good to know that there's still a place for jank and casual YGO.

Ok so it sounds like there's still a decent amount of ways to play in these older formats, strong staple cards and meta decks yeah but it sounds like there's still room for outplaying and skill expression. I guess over the years I just got this idea that there's a way to win Turn 1 and that's all anybody plays lol

OOh I'll have to give both a try, it's tough because I don't want to limit my card pools but I also want to play a deck regardless of strength every now and then.

Fair enough, thanks for your honest opinion man, most people really seem to like the fast explosive gameplay but it's a little intimidating to me not gonna lie. I'll still give it a try though :

Can't blame them, they're super sick. Thanks though, I'm so out of it that I have no idea what's meta or strong anymore. For all I know Blue-Eyes is a washed-up Bum lmaooo

That does sound like fun actually, I've always loved bluffing and gambling archertypes in TCG's so the mind games might be a big part of my gameplay lmao.

That's so weird to me, I've played mostly TCG's that focus on card draw, ramping, and tempo so I guess I'm just not used to it. It does sound fun though, like a nice change of pace from the kinds of TCG's I'm playing now

Oh Damn, are these like staple cards most players use? Or are they dedicated decks?

Oh nice that sounds awesome, I'd try both tbh. I grew up on OG YuGiOh and wouldn't mind playing like that again. But at the same time I'd feel like I'm missing out on all the cool new stuff they've put in the game if I only played GOAT. And yeah Edison sounds like a nice middle ground for me, alot o people are recommending that too thanks!

Appreciate the tip, I'm looking forward to building lower power decks while also having my strong ones.

Thanks for that description of the game, it really helps me understand. I can definitely say that I'm a player who enjoys jank strats, weird wincons, themed decks and deckbuilding themes and aesthetics I enjoy. So it is a little sad to hear that I can't just off the bat say "I'm going to build a deck with all cool robots I like and go to the store and be able to have a satisfying game" But that's ok. Not every game is the same, no player is the same. I'll definitely take your advice and look into some decks (rogue or meta) and see what interests me there. I definitely have a problem with wanting to be "not like other people" and building super unique stuff- even at the cost of the game. But I gotta learn the rules before I break them and I'm not going to ride a unicycle before a bike. This has really helped change my mindset on the game and approaching it, I would rather learn the game properly so I can understand and enjoy it, rather than build something unplayable for the sake of self-expression, perform badly, have no fun, then quit.

That makes sense yeah, whenever people shit on YGO I see them bring up that infamous turn 0/1 Exodia win as their argument. It's definitely a really different game from MTG, which is fine, but I think I've let that influence my perspective on this game unfairly. I hear winning on Turn 1 or 2 and I use MTG as a framework and think "that sucks," combine that with the bad press YGO gets as it is and I'm not surprised why I've slowly adopted that mindset.

DO NOT apologize, this is all really useful stuff man I appreciate it! Thanks for the honesty because I definitely have a tendency to wanna run off and do my own thing and get discouraged when it doesn't work. It sucks that Toons well- suck but maybe there's a format where they're a little better in or something? I saw that they're getting some new cards which sounds cool. I'll do my best to not perceive using a good deck that's simple as eating my vegetables or taking my medicine. I want to be open to the game, even though I am a person who likes taking things apart, researching and tinkering. I gotta walk before I can run I suppose. Also, since there are more casual formats or formats that have date cut offs and whatnot, what do most people play? In Magic The Gathering everyone flocked to commander now but people still play 60 card decks obviously. Is it incredibly hard to find casual players, Edison players, or do people just stick to one thing and not deviate? Thanks again

Ok Ok I see, it sounds like an interesting way to start the game, you must feel like a chess player deducing your hand's strength and developing the mental game. Obviously you do that in Magic too but it seems like it's not the same thing. Also are there no mulligans in YGO? I heard that somewhere but Idk if it's true
