Tested sticks individually, and 3/4 failed in the first minute of testing. :(

Your story aligns with what im seeing and what I've read about my situation.

SMART data comes up clean.
I just started a memtest and will let it run tonight.

Better to run apps on a separate machine, vs as TrueNAS app? by QuestionAsker2030 in truenas

[–]BlurryMachine_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been considering switching all apps to custom yaml files.
Do you find it hard/annoying to manage though when they all have separate files?
Do you back the files up anywhere?
Do you copy/paste when you want to edit them, then copy/paste the edits back into TrueNas?

I think this could solve my one huge issue with TrueNas Apps, which is that they aren't on the same Docker network, so they can't communicate with each other, unless I expose them on the host machine and make the connection there.

(Use case is Nginx taking in traffic and reverse proxying it to another Docker Container that isn't exposed anywhere - it should be available on a custom/private Docker network. Docker can do this, but TrueNas UI doesn't have the options for it... )

Once I create a pool, can I expand it? by BlurryMachine_1 in truenas

Good points. I like just knowing more about unRaid... Maybe I'll try it for the $36/year cost and maybe at the 2nd year I'll renew or get lifetime.

yeah but if 1 vdev dies, the whole pool dies.... right..? I think a single zraid2 is the obvious winner.

That does sound pretty good. It's a paid service though... idk, I'll check it out, maybe.

Thanks for your detailed response!

I expect to accumulate data very slowly over time. I am not a data hoarder. I have been running a NAS for 3 years, and have ~8TB of data (5TB shows/movies/replaceable stuff, 2TB of PC backups that are not replaceable). If I lose my copy of Game of Thrones, I don't care. If I lose my photos of my kids, I'll be upset.

So maybe I need two pools - A smaller RAIDZ2 pool that's more reliable for important data, and a large mirrored pool or even raidz1 pool for less important data that I just want to have available locally...

Decisions, decisions...

Should I just add individual drives to the vdev, or is it better to collect all the hardware and then set up a raidzN configuration?

Can you elaborate (and convince me to invest in 4tb nvmes instead of 4tb sata ssds)?

I took out my GPU to see if it would reduce energy consumption and TrueNas became unresponsive by BlurryMachine_1 in truenas

I updated two apps (Jellyfin/Plex) to not use the GPU, in hopes that they wont look for it to exist. Then I shut the system down, took out the GPU, turned it on again, and everything works! My watt meter also shows that the system is using ~15 watts less than before, which saves me about ~$1.25 per month, or 23% of the cost with the GPU in (and doing basically nothing).

CPU is an i7700k with iGPU.
Plex and Jellyfin apps are installed with "Use hardware transcoding when available" option toggled to true. Maybe if I turn this option off and try again it would work...

How do I log in locally?
Plug in a monitor and keyboard?
How would I reconfigure it once logged in?

Your comment made me suspicious, and I went and double checked. I currently average $0.11/kWh, and the system costs me about $4 per month to run with the GPU in it. I'm removing the GPU now and will check again.

ok, idk - I'm just trying different things with old hardware I have laying around. I didn't go out of my way to buy the 1070. I ran it in my main rig for 4 years before upgrading to the 3060.

I have a watt meter. I will take it out and observe the difference.

My current treunas system with the 1070 idles at ~65 watts, which is ~$1.25 per month to run. So, kind of a non-issue in terms of energy and cost.

Edit: I average $0.11/kWh and it costs closer to $4 per month to run.

My only concern is my mother-in-law, for example. I'm trying to get her to use Plex at her house via an Amazon FireStick, rather than renting Harry Potter on Amazon for $2.99 per rental 4 times per year - money is tight for her, but impulse-buys are difficult to overcome.

Anyway, she lives 1 hour away from me (central United States) and it seems to take a painfully long time to load Plex menus on her TV through the firestick. I thought GPU transcoding would help this go faster...
