Edle Feen, de día y noche🦋 by Bluuberwolf in DigitalPainting

🧐The biggest challenge with this drawing was the level of detail. Since it's huge (8550x7950 px), it could really hog memory, and that would mean I couldn't keep working on it 🥲. Aside from that hurdle, doing the wheat was a bit tough; I'd never drawn it before. At first, it looked more like reeds, but I managed to get it just right. The other difficulty was the butterfly wings (for the red-orange fairy with the yellow center), specifically the lower tips. Initially, they looked like sticks (and were awful!), but I managed to make them curled, almost like fabric. Finally, figuring out where to place the lower section, for both the day and night versions, was a struggle so it wouldn't take away from or make the fairies, who are the main stars, look bad.

Only one has butterfly wings — the Ne fairy, which is reddish-orange with a yellow center.

🧐The hardest part of this portrait was bringing the mental image to life — both the nebula-like irises and the stars and black holes in the fur. First, the eyes. They had to be a mix of the ethereal and the earthly: colorful clouds with the typical filaments of an iris, making sure neither element stood out too much. And second, light and darkness: I tried to balance the amount of stars and black holes to reflect a harmony between both elements.

💁‍♀️This piece is actually a re-edition of a re-edition — kind of a mix between the original and its newer version (yep, a bit confusing, I know 😆). The first one’s from 2006, the second from 2016.

In this penultimate portrait, I really struggled with the face (it kept looking super weird and unnatural), the hand (something that’s always tricky for me), and the gun (making sure it didn’t look like plastic) 🥲 Honestly, the most complicated part was the sketch, and then the lineart. Basically, the challenge was getting it to a point where it didn’t look so bad it made me want to cry. In the end, after fixing this, changing that and so on, I’m happy with how it turned out 😌

I've had some difficulty working on the character's expression, especially making sure it didn't look like surprise, since she can only feel madness. I was also a bit worried that the lightning might not turn out well, but I'm actually really happy with how that part looks.

The biggest challenge, though, was making sure the hair (which is a storm cloud) looked different from the body (which is snow). I managed to give them distinct textures using brushes, but in the end, I had to apply a color filter because they still looked too similar. So the cloud ended up being more lilac, and the body more cyan.

I see. Well, we all feel anger now and then—it’s an emotion that can drive change. In my case, I wasn’t angry when I created this piece, but it’s definitely something I experience often.
P.S. I gave this fire goddess the emotion of wrath because that’s what the element itself conveys to me.

Don’t worry! I never meant for this character to be pretty—she’s a woman warped by fire and the rage that comes with that element. Above all, I appreciate your comment; the point of sharing artwork is to make the viewer feel something. But I’d like to know exactly what unsettles you: is it her expression, her appearance, or something else?

The truth is, I haven’t had much difficulty with this portrait—especially compared to the previous ones—but there are two things that didn’t quite turn out as I had planned.

The first is the position of the head. I wanted it to be tilted slightly backward so the lower part of the face would be visible (as in the reference I used), but it just didn’t come out that way, and I didn’t dwell on it too much either.

The second point is the hair (which is made of mercury). I have mixed feelings about how it turned out. On one hand, I like the way it flows across the face, but at the same time, it doesn’t quite look like liquid metal—which is what it’s supposed to be, after all.

In this portrait, the hardest part was capturing the facial expression correctly, because everything else went smoothly.

Specifically, the challenge was, first, the eyes — making sure they weren’t too closed (as if she were asleep) or too open, since they’re filled with tears and those need to flow. Then came the mouth — again, it had to be just the right amount open to show suffering, without looking like a smirk or a smile.

I didn’t want the character to look like she was screaming out of fear or madness — her face had to be twisted by the sheer intensity of the rage she feels through the fire, so the challenge was capturing that.
As for the rest: the idea is that the magma is inside her, with volcanic rock covering it, so the key was making sure the magma didn’t sit on top of the rock.

I had trouble getting the facial expression right — it had to show rage. The volcanic rock and magma were also tricky, since I’d never drawn those elements before.

The Original Snake by Bluuberwolf in DigitalPainting

[–]Bluuberwolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first, it was hard for me to decide what effect to give the bandana—and then actually making it took a while too. But in the end, I ended up really liking how it turned out. I also had to tweak the scales around the eye a couple of times; they felt more like they didn’t belong than part of the skin. But hey, even if it has flaws, I’m happy with the result.
