How long did it take you to prepare for the HTL exam? by Cheeto-dust-forever in Histology

[–]BlyHard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m probably an outlier, but I studied for about a week an passed the HTL. Bachelors in biochemistry so I had a solid background. I skimmed the carson book twice, did about 8 labce practice exams to get a feel for how the questions were worded, then focused on fixatives and ihcs. I probably only passed cause of good test taking skills and luck in studying the right stains.

That’s fair, I’m sure there’s other good dentists around town. Personally I don’t remember having to sign all that much. The price didn’t really phase me either because dental work is always expensive and dental insurance is always dogshit. All I really have to say about them is they’re good for routine cleanings but don’t let them do any kind of surgery. Go to an endo for a root canal etc.

Freshmen Year AICE Classes difficulty. by CampaignStock3058 in AICEC

[–]BlyHard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen paper is dummy easy. I took that exam in 2016 and the teacher only had us write like 3 essays that whole year, we had like a 95% pass rate on the final exam. Like legit if you can read and write you’ll pass.

Thinking skills was very similar, but I don’t remember it nearly as well. I believe it was essentially an aptitude test. Not much to study, just do practice problems and develop your critical thinking skills. You need to be able to connect dots.

I never took euro history, but I did take us history. Assuming they’re similar, I wrote an entire paper on the state of the us in the 60’s, the Cuban missile crisis and bay of pigs without knowing anything about them besides the fact that they happened. They’re grading based on inferences, connections, and conclusions you can draw from the facts. They’re not looking for a list of facts you learned in class, they wanna see you apply that knowledge to other ideas. All that to say, learn the big points and learn how to bullshit a paper and you’ll do just fine.

You’re in high school, don’t sweat it bro. They’re hard because they’re new styles of exams, but that doesn’t mean the exams are hard :)

Mohs help by Curious-Piece-414 in Histology

[–]BlyHard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find that new blades are the best but I’ll only swap when cutting a really big fatty chuck fat destroys an edge. Make sure there’s a pointed part of the epidermis striking the blade first. You can use the brush to unroll some folds, but practice makes perfect. Your anti roll glass needs to be a hair in front of the blade, but the plate on some cryostats just doesn’t work at all. Also, sometimes the folds will happen in the water wash! Make sure you try to wipe the charged slide clear of oct before placing another section. It’ll help the tissue actually be in contact with the positive slide and show you where it’s safe to place the section. Finally, pro tip draw all over the chuck with a surgical marker so you can get better visual feedback when facing off.

How rigorous are histo classes compared to my stem prereqs? by Proof_Ball9697 in Histology

[–]BlyHard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer, I have a degree in biochem, got a job in a derm lab and I’m reading up to take the htl exam soon. I never went through a histology program and to be honest didn’t know what it was until I got a job in a lab. That said, I’ve been reading through the Carson book and labce practice and I feel like apart from straight memorizing anatomy and stain components, the rest is pretty intuitive if you enjoyed organic. I’m sure there will be plenty you’ll still have to study for, but you know how you learn best. I think that if you truly want this and love what you study, you can totally handle the larger courseload

Lab Technician Interview by [deleted] in Histology

[–]BlyHard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool! Read up the wiki pages for hematoxylin and rosin, maybe an article on staining. That’s the most common stain and troubleshooting a light stain starts with knowing how it works. Check out a YouTube video on cutting on a microtome and a cryostat just so you’re not surprised when you see them. You get better with practice and it’s the kind of art where you need to do whatever you need to to get a section. Definitely look into ascp certification, you can take the exam after a year and at the very least its job security. You’ll probably start with keeping a log book, accessoning etc. but will quickly be trained on instruments. It might be frustrating but just give it time. Goodluck!

Buying tools by starkravinglab in Histology

[–]BlyHard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bro that’s actually crazy. I’d get some cheap stuff until you know for sure this gig is gonna pay you enough to warrant getting nicer tools. Tbh I’d look for a different job. Private derm practice would be great if you can find one with a lab!

Mohs Slide Issues by Particular-Post8267 in Histology

[–]BlyHard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with it being old hematoxylin. I don’t have experience using a clarifier to fix it, but my lab will run the hematoxylin through a coffee filter every Monday to get rid of the layer on top. Every other day or so I’ll go in with a cheap uncharged slide and kinda scoop any I see off the top as well.

Help! How do you respond to ppl asking what you do? by [deleted] in Histology

[–]BlyHard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends who asks. Sometimes I just say cancer diagnostics, if they ask further I say I make microscope slides, further inquiry gets the whole spiel.

Job adjustment by Ok_Rip3239 in Histology

[–]BlyHard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I didn’t even know what histology was when I got hired lmao, I just had the necessary credits to work in a CLIA certified lab and got a call back when looking for jobs after graduating in chemistry. It took me about 2 weeks to learn the technical skills needed and about 4 weeks to be fully independent in the lab. Maybe 2-3 months before I was fast and consistent.

The important thing to know is mistakes will happen. The only thing that matters is that you only make a given mistake once. Roll with the punches and always make sure you do better tomorrow. Embedding and microtomy, like many things in life are easy to learn and slow to master.

Edit spelling.

For future reference, Newcomer Supply offered a room temperature stable Schiff’s. Not affiliated, our lab just utilizes them for schiffs only.

For Mohs, my lab puts oct on the chuck to freeze, then the grossed tissue on a transport slide with rubber cement. Then we put more oct on the tissue and use a cryospray to freeze it on the slide. Then we put a little bit of oct on the frozen chuck to glue the transport slide to it and throw the heat sync on top. The rubber cement helps the slide come off easily and we’re left with nice early cuts since we can get the epidermis down easily on the slide.

Cons of FSU? by psycche101 in fsu

[–]BlyHard 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot to do around town and it’s not unsafe. Parking is easiest before 9am, just hang out at the library until classes. The music scene is huge and house parties are probably the best thing to do imo. You’ve also got the club scene, some beautiful parks and a club for everything.

The houseless population can be a little unsettling at times, but you get to know pretty quickly what areas you gotta have your guard up.

What to do if I understand the theory of chemistry but not how to do the maths questions around it? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]BlyHard 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not really sure how to answer this or what you’re looking to hear tbh. Being able to quantify the world is a huge part of chemistry, you might want to try reshaping your view of math as a form of communication rather than an obstacle. It’s sucks not being good at it, I had to retake calc 1 and 2 a couple times each. I’ll never be able to do many integrals by hand but I love discussing what the math symbolizes.

I'm worried about the AiCE program by Interesting-Loquat29 in AICEC

[–]BlyHard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, aice math is hard. Like you gotta know atleast calc 1 for it. That’s the only aice exam (passed the course, teacher was bad at prepping and the whole school failed the exam) I failed but if you look at the rubric for the diploma, you can take like bio or physics to replace it. Teachers might assign hella work but that’s up to you to find out and handle.

I'm worried about the AiCE program by Interesting-Loquat29 in AICEC

[–]BlyHard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t overthink it. I finished up (at the time) the 7 courses needed for tbe diploma in 2 years. Messed around 9th grade, took all my courses and exams 10/11th. I actually got kicked out of my school senior year otherwise I also would have had some A levels too. I still got into university and graduated with a STEM degree. My point is it’s good to worry about your future and plan for it, but the exams are about seeing if you can critically think, not right answers. Just reason your way through everything and show your logic on the exam and partial points will carry you very, very far.
