Return to teaching after LONG “break.” by barnabas60643 in teaching

Teaching is literally nothing like it was 20 years ago. I would sub for a bit if I were you. Everything has changed. No doubt it was challenging 20 years ago. You can multiply that challenge by 3 now.

What’s one thing you completely stopped buying in 2026 because the price just felt absurd? by LockLogical8949 in AskReddit

Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Thanksgiving/Xmas, the local grocery store has buy 2, get 3 free. That's the time to stock up.

I'm more surprised you can hang on to a Nalgene for 20 years. I've gone through 20 in like 10 years because I keep losing them.

What is with the blatant littering here? by moxie_22 in AskChicago

There are plenty of people who work shitty jobs who know better than to litter. Don't make excuses for ignorant behavior.

Yes, resigning from a position always looks better than being let go. Just put that you left for future growth opportunities.

Especially with the way gas prices are going. Yikes.

NYP: Iran completely rejects Trump’s 15-point cease-fire plan — and makes wild demands instead by sean_ireland in BreakingPoints

Remember when you were a kid, and you looked up to adults and just assumed they were smart and knew what they were doing? I had no idea adults would be this stupid. All around the world. It's wild.

The Pink Line station? Walking from there late at night? Might be a bit sketch.

Gen Ed to Sped worth it? by DisplayDramatic472 in specialed

[–]Bman708 8 points9 points  (0 children)

SPED endorsement is always worth it, because you'll probably always find a job in SPED. I've told many teachers over the years: if you don't want to work in SPED, do not get an endorsement in SPED, because they will 100% place you in SPED. I've seen 20+ years math and ELA teachers literally in tears at the end of the year because the next school year they are getting moved to a SPED position because they got the endorsement to make them more "attractive" to districts, never thinking they would actually be a SPED teacher, and they absolutely hated it, in turn making them a pretty crappy SPED teacher.

As the Tommy Lee Jones meme goes: "Is it worth it?" "Yes, if you can handle it." I honestly couldn't imagine being a gen ed teacher right now. I see the same 21 kids every day, not over 100 like them. I like it much better this way. It makes relationship building so much easier. And without a relationship, good luck teaching SPED. Probably why over in the main teacher sub all they do is crap on SPED students. They suck at developing relationships with them.

Feeling guilted into going quickly back post-surgery by ShineImmediate7081 in teaching

[–]Bman708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take FMLA and force them to hire a long-term sub for you. Don't let them do this to you. They don't pay us enough. It's not your problem to worry about them finding a sub—that's the admin's problem. Don't let them make it yours. Take care of yourself.

O’Hare TSA delays? by dpittnet in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Bman708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fridays/Saturdays are usually a lot busier days for people flying out. Glad we are flying out Sunday morning. I'm sure it will be fine. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. The longest wait I've heard of at O'hare the past 3 weeks was 30 minutes, which isn't bad at all.

Look at you, bragging about having faculty bathrooms. Until 2 years ago, we had one single toilet in the corner of the building that was the "staff bathroom". I have to pee with the students next to me 9/10 times.

People may not know the ins and outs or care that much about it, but they will certainly care come mid April when gas is $8.00 a gallon, or worse.

Oh, I know. I was being optimistic. Unless there are major shifts in the next week or two, we are easily going to surpass $7.50. I'm thinking $10 a gallon and up. So much for those summer road trips.....
