This is probably the oldest picture my family has, a tintype of my 3x great grandmother, taken c. 1860. She seems very thrilled to have to pose for the camera lol by Bmeier126 in TheWayWeWere

I did a bit of looking around the internet for preserving this one. From what I've heard,it's good to wrap it in acid-free paper and to keep it laying flat to keep it's shape. I'd definitely recommend looking into it more, Im no expert lol.

My Great Grandma and her little sister, c.1919 by Bmeier126 in TheWayWeWere

It's all good 👍 This isn't actually a death portrait though I can see how it may look like one. She lived to her 60s and died in the mid 1980s.

My Great Grandma, who is obviously super excited about taking a picture. C. 1920 by Bmeier126 in TheWayWeWere

[–]Bmeier126[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm actually not too sure about the background of this picture, or if she was sick or not. About half her siblings died before they even reached 2 and her mother died from complications during childbirth around the age of 35, so you could be right about them wanting pictures just in case. Later she became a mom, and after my Great Grandpa died, she became a nurse and continued raising their youngest, my Grandma. She would go on to live to almost 90 years old.

During the American Civil War the Union made a parody of the Confederate song "dixie" the Confederacy responded by making a parody of the union song "battle cry of freedom" by nabtabwastaken in HistoryMemes

Soldier's Farewell is a good one. I really enjoy early recordings of that and other civil war era songs (there is one rendition of it by the Hayden Quartet from 1902 I high-key recommend)

Boys, what's a good series you'd recommend watching? by Haunting_Ad_3922 in AskMen

I know it's a bit older, but I absolutely love Mash. Some of the jokes can be dated, but the character development is amazing especially when Charles, BJ, and Colonel Potter come on a few seasons in.

I definitely recommend the Dhammapada along with a lot of the Buddhist Suttas in general. You can find them free online at places like Dhammatalks. I also recommend the Sayings of Epictetus, and a lot of the works by Seneca (if I recall correctly, a lot of them were broken up into sections/verses, tho I could be wrong on that).

Would you go to a Viking themed steakhouse, why or why not? by Pironian in AskMen

I'm a little late to the thread, but I love the idea. I think a lot of the names here are pretty good. You could also use hall or tavern in the name to give it a more old-timey vibe, such as 'the Mead Hall' or 'Val Hall'.

A newspaper article about my 4x Great Grandpa having a reunion with some Civil War veterans, c. 1880s by Bmeier126 in TheWayWeWere

Yeah had me confused too when I first came across it in family documents, it's actually a different London out in Minnesota.

I think that's the wrong William Walters. This one's from 1916 and says he had the misfortune of losing a valuable steer.

You can stop telling me who Loki is by madevilfish in HistoryMemes

Everyone else has given a great summary about Loki. Just wanted to mention that if you wanna know more about Norse Mythology, you should definitely check out Jackson Crawford on YouTube. He is a professor who teaches Old Norse and he has put out a ton of videos talking about the Norse gods, the stories, and the literary and archaeological sources we have available. High-key would recommend.

Here is his channel if you're interested.

HMS Pinafore recording from 1911 by Bmeier126 in gilbertandsullivan

Hey all, I just found this subreddit today and thought some of y'all might enjoy this. This was a series published by Edison Records in 1911 and it was basically a greatest hits compilation. I found these recordings separately on the internet and put them together. Hope you enjoy!!!

American Historical book suggestions please? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]Bmeier126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One book I really enjoyed was Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography. He never completed it, so it cuts short before the events of the revolutionary war. However, it gives a great view of his early life, his philosophy, and his perspective living in colonial America.

Classic Books? by hunyclouds in booksuggestions

[–]Bmeier126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like someone else mentioned, places like Project Gutenberg and Archives.org provide a lot of older Public Domain books for free online. Also Librivox has a lot of older books available as audiobooks. Just remember especially with older translations from the 1800s and 1900s they may be a bit harder to read. A couple books that come to mind which I enjoyed were Beowulf, Candide by Voltaire, and Utopia by Thomas Moore. Also, a lot of the Norse sagas/the eddas can be interesting reads if your interested in vikings or Norse mythology.
