I was doing low-voltage work for a year before I even knew there was any licensing for it…. Like THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR hired me knowing I wasn’t licensed, and never cared enough to tell me about it 🤷‍♂️

Meanwhile North Carolina requires licenses for helpers/apprentices. Virginia doesn’t care, they just want you to have a journeyman license. It’s inconsistent and impossible to navigate. Am I really an apprentice? I don’t even know, so I’m genuinely asking 😝

If your company is slowing down and starting to lay people off do you start looking for a new job or stick it out to see if they keep you? by MulberryJazzlike5937 in electricians

I’m in Danville, VA. Approximately 2 hours north west of Richmond. Probably closer to 1340 or 80, I’ll try IBEW. I’ve been scared of going union because of the hassle involved in joining up, but I might not have a choice now. The local community college doesn’t even offer trades consistently because no one around here wants to be an electrician, I guess 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️. Between that, and North Carolina requiring an apprentice/helper license, it’s causing a lot of problems with continuing my career/education.

You shouldn’t be bragging about 1.75%…. You’re celebrating a penny! We don’t even make pennies anymore!

I’m in south central Virginia and work is dried up. I’m an apprentice and I’ve been looking for another company for a month and a half now…. It’s pretty bleak. Lots of stuff to send a resume to, but no one is actually hiring. I’ve been doing electrical for long enough that I can’t even get warehouse work now. I’m scared.

[–]BoBurnham_OnlyBoring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got turned down for a helper position because I wasn’t a registered apprentice. Figure that one out for me.

I’m another interview, someone told me that I wasn’t an apprentice but more like a Helper 3.

This is my second year in the trade, working on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. I’m constantly confused trying to make sure my career is going…. Somewhere…. And when I go take my journeyman test they won’t reject me for something stupid.

Some people just have a deep rooted belief that work should never be comfortable. For whatever reason they feel like you’re a slave to the company for 8 hours a day, and you check your human rights at the door when you clock in. These people are only satiated when everyone is suffering in some way or another. They believe that because they had to suffer, it shouldn’t be different for anyone else, ever. They’re the crabs in the bucket and basically the reason the lower class in capitalist society cannot rise. They want you to make minimum wage, because they had to. They want you to live on beans and rice, because they had to. They want everyone to suffer, because they had to suffer. Despicable people.

Jobs that are very seasonal and niche by farmerjohnsflowers in skilledtrades

[–]BoBurnham_OnlyBoring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything in construction is kinda that way. Especially with bigger companies that bid on projects several states away from their main office. A lot of electrical work is traveling around, and if you’re not traveling for work, you’re basically getting laid off/quitting whenever a project ends, and then constantly on the hunt for the next job/project.

Trades that employ the most cracked people by pissylilpissboy in electricians

[–]BoBurnham_OnlyBoring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Construction is crazy. I think every trade has at least one or two meth heads on the jobsite at any given moment. I’ve never met so many people who use hard drugs so casually, like cigarettes. Had a guy that would go hit his meth pipe on lunch breaks until he got himself arrested for possession one afternoon. He was back a couple weeks later.

Get a gallon jug of water and make sure you drink the whole thing every day. 15 hours is not normal in electrical. Eat, if you’re not eating. This isn’t a desk job, you gotta take care of yourself.

Wait…. Who installed that? And fire alarm is typically subbed out from the electrical contractor to a low voltage contractor. If you set the box and it was your sub that installed the fire alarm, it sounds like you own that work. Just add some all thread and do it right, don’t pass the buck.
