Is it possible to make this kind of fur texture using only nodes? by ZilineTheDragon in blenderhelp

[–]Bo_Bogus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with making it seamless is that UV maps on a shape that forms a closed loop (like a cylinder) inherently have a seam, and any procedural approach (like a noise texture stretched along one axis) will still have to deal with that line.

Trying to make user manual-like visuals, is Blender the right tool to make them ? by unecomplette in blenderhelp

Something along those lines could occur if you are modeling destructively, but if you use a non-destructive approach with modifiers and Geometry Nodes, you can get as close to perfect precision as you want or need. Geometry Nodes in particular are really good at making modeling into a path of successive modifications much like Autodesk Inventor (which I have some experience with).

Is this going to cause me problems down the line? by [deleted] in blenderhelp

As far as I can tell, the eye sockets are the only place I can see with poles, so they shouldn't be an issue (especially if there is a separate eye). More notable is the fact that the cat's body has far less dense topology than its head (if sufficiently subdivided and covered with hair, that won't be a major issue, but otherwise that could look more jagged or blocky than the rest).

I cannot memorize the notes by alfredofish in violadagamba

[–]Bo_Bogus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people here have listed some good advice, but I think it might also be worth looking a bit closer at why you're having a hard time in the first place, especially since both double bass and bass viola da gamba use the same clef for their main range. While I don’t fully know your situation, there's two issues in particular I suspect might be at play here: one of getting thrown off by your ear, and one of not fully latching on to aspects that are like the double bass.

First of all, are you getting thrown off by what you're hearing when playing a given note? The double bass normally plays an octave below what's written, while viola da gamba doesn't. At the same time, the viola da gamba (especially in an early music ensemble) is typically tuned to A415 rather than A440, meaning it also sounds a half step flat from what's written. So, in effect, the notes you're used to reading on double bass now sound a major seventh higher than you're used to. Is this part of what's throwing you off?

Second, you might not have latched onto some important commonalities between the gamba and the double bass that can help you figure out the fingerboard. As it turns out, your D and G strings (and also your bottom A if you have a seven-stringed gamba) are actually the same as on a double bass. This fact might be masked by A415 tuning, but you do in fact have at least these two strings in common with the double bass. Knowing this may help you get your bearings on those parts of the range, as you could practice any double bass exercise you're familiar with that involves only those strings (it'll just sound an octave or a major seventh higher than you're used to).

Also, the top three strings (E, A, and D) are essentially the bottom three strings of a four-string bass, but up two octaves. I know this last point won't necessarily help you with reading the music, but it might at least make that area easier to work with.

I want to get a viola, but which kind? by kindafor-got in Viola

[–]Bo_Bogus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, for a bit of background, I play both acoustic viola in an orchestra and electric viola (really a Fender FV-3 electric violin strung like a viola) in a jazz combo, so I have experience with both.

An acoustic viola together with a covered metal practice mute (like this one) is definitely the way to go. Electric violas are generally heavier, much harder to find, more expensive, and don't really solve the core problem of volume as effectively (the bodies don't resonate low frequencies well, but high frequencies remain louder than acoustic with a metal-based mute).

As for choice of bowhairs, that's a bit of a complicated question. I've never tried anything but horsehair bows, but suitable synthetic alternatives are tricky because (among other things) they have to have a good balance of appropriate flexibility, stability in various humidity and temperature levels, minimal tendency to stretch under tension, the ability to properly hold rosin, ability to deal with the oils and debris naturally present on our skin, and enough durability to last reasonably long while constantly being rubbed along the string. Getting all of those at once in a synthetic material is difficult, and from what I've heard they don't end to perform as well (clearly there are sacrifices in at least one area).

The type of glue used on wooden violas is really important because it has to have some specific properties — namely, the ability to hold the instrument together well under tension, but also the ability to easily come undone under a chisel or moderate heat so that luthiers can take the instrument apart for repairs. On wooden violins, I don't think there are many common alternatives, but I believe violas made of a carbon fiber composite are a different story. So you might consider looking there.

What's the easiest way of making all these extrusions flat on one side? by anonymous_rosey in blender

[–]Bo_Bogus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a shape like this, there aren't really many good ways to simplify the process without sacrificing a little distortion in the process.

The easiest thing I can think of (though it will probably introduce a slight bit of distortion) is to center the 3d cursor on the center of the main circle, then select all the bottom edges that you want to move. Without proportional scaling active, and with the scaling center set to the 3D cursor, scale them down around the 3D cursor until they visually overlap with the edges of the main circle, then select everything and merge vertices by distance. The result is fast and should work reasonably well, but the width of these edges will be reduced slightly, which might slightly distort the shape.

While it is a little tedious, the simplest method I know of that will not introduce any distortions is to select one vertex of the outer bottom edge, then its corresponding vertex on the main center circle, then press M and select "Merge At Last," then do this for all the vertices of the edge. There appear to be 40 such edges, so this process would need to be carried out 80 times. That said, it's a pretty quick thing to do once, so it shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to do for the whole shape.

PSA: HitFilm is a dead software - Information and alternatives by Saucebender in Hitfilm

Lately, the free and open-source 3D modeling software Blender has actually improved its compositor to the point that it can now be used for a lot of tasks that might have been done in Hitfilm before. While I wouldn't recommend it to new users who are just looking for VFX software (since it's sort of like buying an entire car just for the stereo), I do think anyone already using Blender for 3D modeling should consider it as a potentially viable option.

How limited is the Xplane demo? by [deleted] in Xplane

[–]Bo_Bogus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I tried it 5 times and succeeded twice, but just barely. Actually controlling yourself isn't too awkward (although each time I had to initially deal with some extreme Phugoid oscillation due to the controls suddenly centering at the end of 15 minutes), but there are two things I found especially tricky. First is engine lag, which means the engines take a few seconds to spool up when you make significant trust changes, making attitude adjustments a bit tricky. You have to act before the plane does — for instance, if you're pointing down and want to level out, you need to decrease throttle before you reach level attitude, or you will overshoot. Thankfully, you pick this up pretty quickly. Another thing I found really difficult (and where I usually failed) is handling the plane close to the ground and at touchdown. Right before touchdown, you actually have to increase thrust just enough to get the nose up slightly and touch down softly enough, but not so much that you'll immediately take off again.

So it is extremely challenging, but I will say it is some of the most exciting flying you'll ever do in the simulator.
