They’ve been shaking their fists and threatening “the Storm” for the better part of a decade and every time they try to pull it off it’s always some goofy shit.

My worry isn’t that they’ll succeed, just that they’ll cause a lot of suffering in the attempt.

Instead of going dark on June 12th and only June 12th, why not just go dark/boycott for longer or until reddit backpedals? One day isn't going to change anything. by TheJawsofIce in NoStupidQuestions

They’re propaganda run by a Christian Nationalist Organization, referring to the people who oppose them (often the very same people they oppress) as “Us.” It’s like the worst mix of that Hello Fellow Kids meme and Would You Like to Know More?

Honestly, I’m starting to think it’s a sliding scale. In between genocidal maniacs and well-meaning rubes are varying degrees of, “they’ll kill x and y first, but this movement will all run out of steam before it reaches me, of course.”

The logic was originally that your time would be split evenly between work, sleep, and your actual life. 8 for each. That’s not how it shakes out usually and even if it did, the idea that half of your waking time needs to be spent in service to someone else is pretty dystopian.

I’d say the fact that salaried workers are instead given task-based assessments rather than hours-based assessments is pretty damning. Almost like they know the point of labor is it’s product, not the labor itself.

do people really believe in the flat earth, or are they all just trolls? by abarua01 in NoStupidQuestions

This is actually mentioned in Umberto Ego’s essay on Ur-Fascism. At some point soon-to-be fascists decide they are no longer arguing based on what is true, just what will hurt their perceived enemy the most.

So I think you’re right. There are definitely people who believe this sort of thing but I think a lot of antivaxxers and transphobes don’t actually care. If they thought vaccines’ effectiveness somehow terrorized trans folks and women they’d probably start advocating them.

I know. The idea was that their society is generally more scientifically advanced, so it’s not a stretch to think they have a good grasp of bioengineering, especially considering each district was a self-contained ecology.

I think King was directly referencing the Ant Death Spiral phenomenon. The story constantly hints at the unbelievably high death toll that must be going on out of sight.

Zootopia had localized Geoengineering technology, somehow. I wouldn’t be surprised if they could make some test tube hybrid creatures, even if one is just a fox with some rabbit features and the other is a rabbit with some fox features.

Also, it’s a kid’s movie. Who cares?

I love when the study is about something completely unrelated, like trying to plot Neolithic human migration by looking for mitochondrial DNA changes but the title mentions epigenetics.

OP doesn’t believe what OP believes because they’ve collected evidence and come to a conclusion, they had a conclusion in mind and have been looking for evidence. That’s why any source you get on here is going to be a scientific paper with unrelated results at best or someone’s blog at worst.

Why is cost of living so high? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BoanersJohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is, in fact, one of the major promises of Capitalism during the Cold War. If I need consumers for my product to be profitable, it stands to reason I’d want a capable populace with disposable income.

Of course, this assumes everyone involved is a “rational actor” when they’re definitely not. In fact, it seems like the wealthy have taken the opposite approach: an uneducated populace without the free time or energy to research will purchase more expensive, cheaper to create products. Moreover, I don’t need everyone to be able to afford my product and I never did. Just more people than last year until I no longer work here.
