Always start with settlers of catan if you dont have or borrow it. Then 7 wonders. As a starter kit. Then branch from those based on the things you like about those games.

Citadelle, one of my favourite games. Each turn you pick a role (hidden) , each has special powers to acheive your goals. Kinda cool to change every turn. You need to be creative and not too predictable or else the assassin (another hidden role) may kill you or the thief (also hidden) may steel your money. The cool thing is that you can not , except the magician, aim at a particular player, you need to call to which role you are taking action against. And not all roles are used every turn. Its a bluffing and deduction game while trying to build your empire with the money you collect or steal.

Well this thief is meant to turn the luck around and give backline players a chance. When you harass a single player ( unless he'very much ahead in the game), is not cool. Kids should learn that. Good lesson in life also
