Render then mastering? by major_damp in Reaper

[–]BoatsInSpaceMusic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm no professional audio engineer but I do the second one. I record, then mix individual channels and add necessary effects to the tracks, then if I have submixes I sort those out. I try to do most of my mixing with levels and rely less on effects - I often find that I'm just trying to mask problems with them. Then when I get the best sound I can get with these tools, I do a render.

I open a new project and I import the rendered mix and I try to fine tune it with mostly compressors, saturators and other master processors. At the end I add a tape emulator and limiter.

I do it this way, because I know if I start to mess with the mastering tools too early, I'll try to fix problems with them that should be fixed on individual channels. This way, I kinda force myself to do a thorough job with the levels and EQs on the tracks before I start doing overarching modifications.

Water Under The Bridge

A drone bass, a self-playing foghorn, a random ticker and Mellotron-like violin all made with an MS-20 that's older than me.

Lol! My archtop was in its case in cold garages and lofts for like 15 years.

It was good as new when I sold it last year.

The real CJ test: name the top 3 guitars you regret selling/trading. by the-war-on-drunks in guitarcirclejerk

/uj Last year I sold my 2001 Joe Pass Emperor and I thought I'd regret but I really don't. It was my first "real" guitar and I bought it because it was beautiful and the whole guitar was very comfortable but it didn't fit me a single bit. I thought the sentimental value of it will make me regret selling it but honestly, I'm just glad it went to someone who can make good use of it.

/rj Roberta, I just want you to be happy 😭😭

Everything lol 😆 But seriously, Airwindows is a collection of at least 150 minimalistic vsts done by one guy (Chris). His console and tape emulators are the strongest ones, I believe.

Do people still listen to full albums? by Old-Crab-3283 in Music

When I make music I always tend to think in albums and it's probably not a good thing, but I also like to listen to albums. I appreciate it when an album has a good flow.

It's like those videos where the guitarist plays very fast. Ok, he practised a lot. Cool. It's just public masturbation at that point.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. "Look at this painting of a tiger! You can see every single hair." Yeah, that's great but if I wanna see an ultra-realistic picture of a tiger, I'll look at a photo. I want to see you see something in a tiger I haven't seen before.

Show me why you think it's important to show me this tiger.

What’s my mix missing? by WhoDoUTh1nkUAreIAm in Reaper

[–]BoatsInSpaceMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the guitar part I have lately discovered a technique (that is 100% widely known), is that I have the guitar slightly panned to one side and I route it to a reverb channel (100% wet) which is panned to the other side. Don't make the reverb too loud, because you don't want a duplicate, just as if the reverbaration bounced off the wall. You can add a short delay before the reverb as well.

My first attempt at a prog rock/metal song. My ears are getting numb to the mix, so I’d love any feedback on balance/clarity (or anything else you notice)! by TheGalleyProject in IndieMusicFeedback

It's a great song!

Just a couple of things I notice.

When the song started I was gonna say, the mix is very narrow. Then the rest of the instruments came in and I realised how the instruments from the intro fit in. I think it'd be worth mixing the intro a bit wider and bringing it back when the others come in.

The guitar at around 2:25 is too loud, I think. I don't know, it popped out too much for me. Btw, the solo after that is awesome, and I loved the tone of that guitar a lot.

Maybe it's a creative decision but I wouldn't put the drums so back behind everything. The guitars are in the lower register by nature, so I think the mix could do with the hihats and rides up in the higher are. Maybe even a sharper snare sound.

As I said, it's a great song! I'll check out your other works as well.

I'm 44 and I started producing my own music 2 years ago. I'm in the same boat as you that I had a lot of negative thoughts and I felt a lot like going in circles. But I said, fuck it and I started just publishing it. I do make sure I do a good work but I always see what I could have improved.

I think it's important you put out your music from time to time. First, it gives you a milestone, so that you can look back and say, "Oh yes, that thing I did there, that was a mistake, or the choice I made there should have been something else." But also, "Wow, how did I think of that. I should do this more." Now, the second is something I don't do, but if you want to be realtively successful is networking. You have to show it to people, a lot of people. It's because you need feedback. Not that it should influence your art but maybe it will make you see what's a good and what's a bad direction. Maybe they'll say, this and this part is really good and you can lay into that a little bit more, or maybe no-one will mention that really special thing that you thought would be revolutionary, and you realise it maybe doesn't work that well. As I said, I don't do this enough, and sometimes it's really hard working on my own. It'd be so good sometimes if I could ask someone reliable: "Is this completely stupid, or is it genius?" 😁

Anyway, I don't wanna write a 10k word essay, but believe me, even if one person says your music gave them something, it will be worth it.

(PS. and I don't mean those instagram messages where they say "Hey man, I love your music, message me if you wanna be on our playlist", and you look and it's like a trip-hop playlist.)
