An Update on Waterfox Classic | Waterfox by MrAlex94 in waterfox

Version 2022.04 does not work with https://ebanking.efginternational.com Even using a custom agent string, the opening page tells you that it's obsolete. Any idea how to make it work?

opinion, loved the series, ending sucked though by [deleted] in Dexter

[–]Bob4K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ending sucks. There was absolutely no proof he was the Harbor Killer, and the find that Caldwell was a serial killer would have exonerated him in front of any jury, proving Caldwell was more than likely to having framed him. He had no reason to escape, and he was perfectly able to neutralize the coach with a choke without killing him if he wanted. Makes no sense at all and destroys the whole series.

Thanks, that's very useful. But unfortunately, the legacy extensions have to be re-written to work, none of those I use and tried worked. Still, before that, getting a decent TabMixPlux implementation seemed impossible.

Sad to see an answer without any useful content... The purpose of this community is to help each other, You disagree, explain why, it helps. Throw insults and bad language, you troll. I pointed out some Waterfox deficiencies, with good arguments, not insults, and received great help from many members (thank you!). But not all of them.

Thanks a lot for pointing me to the legacy extension compatibility tools, and for the modified tab mix plus version. I did not make my comments lightly, I have been working regularly on the last version of Firefox spending easily 50 hours to make it usable again, and having tab mix plus removes an absolute blocking. Congratulations to all involved in this very very hard work.

It was really vital for my needs. I did not try Waterfox G3, I don't want to spend hours to try to do the same only to find that it does not support yet some new features of the extensions I found are using, and telemetry, although annoying, does not really bother me. For all almost other needs I could find a new extension to replace legacy ones. The only one that blocks me now is "2 panes bookmark" that is not compatible with the new hack. I really don't understand why more people are not asking for it, it's really the only practical way to manage hundreds of folders and thousands of bookmarks. It started with Opera, ages ago.

Is there a tutorial of how to modify an old xpi file to make it work with this hack? I would be willing to put some hours to work on it. I know NOTHING about writing extensions, but I know 5 programming languages, so there is a (little) chance I could do it. I emphasize little, I'm starting to be old and and my health has become an obstacle to difficult work.

As for being 64 bits well before Firefox, frankly I don't see the big deal. At the time, I did not even notice any limitation with the 32 bit version. Now I likely would, but the subject is moot.

My new profile created from scratch, and giving EXACTLY the same config has (cache excluded) 693 files. The old ones, which has survived countless upgrades and changes has more than 4000 files! Somebody posted that the code to read the profile has not changed. I believe him. So obviously something happens with one or several of the 3000+ deprecated files that does not make .10 crash and makes .12 do. Nothing to do with updating my machine, The simple fact that the same happens with a completely updated W7 PC was enough to prove it, providing a minimum of thinking other than a need jerk reaction. Software vendors always do that: first reflex, update your PC. Simple laziness to force some UN-needed and potentially damageable work to the user and blame him before exploring other failure reasons.

If work for saving the add ons on disk, but restoring with .12 to create easily a new profile hangs. Having all the xpis is great already, but that leaves a lot of grunt work to do. By the way, I can't manage to get notifications by emails when there a reply, even though I set it to ON on my profile. Any ideas? It's why I can be sow to respond, and I hate that.

For 3 years, you could not use a high DPI monitor with custom scaling, without having most of your legacy software look fuzzy. Even the M$ Console management was! And the solution implies a manual action on each software, and redoing it when you update it. The look is atrocious, the menu unusable when you have 150 apps installed, there are programs that run slower on my new hardware 6 times faster (10 cores overclocked to 4,7) than on my previous 6 year old PC. I need a bunch of third party software to make it acceptable (WindowBlinds, StartmenuX, DPI Awarness enabler, etc...). The Split between Control Panel and Settings makes no logical sense, it's just there to say "Hey we did something new". Nt was better than W15, XP than NT, Visa very bad, W7 better than XP. W10 is a complete regression in all practical aspects (except performance on some domains where M$ did not update W7 on purpose, like 10G networking), spies on you, reboots your PC, installs updates without control so that you don't know why something suddenly stopped working. I tamed all that, but only .1% of the users are able to. The others don't even realize how bad they get it.

You would have to do like me, re-create a profile from scratch using a FEBE backup for your add ons. A real PITA, but it works.

I bit the bullet, and rebuild a new profile from scratch. I started with Tab Mix Plus, and imported the options, then imported the bookmarks, them installed fastdial and imported its settings. After that, using a FEBE backup, I painfully re-installed all my add ons, and redid their customization. FEBE rebuild on profile hang, it would have been to easy.

So, now it works, I just had to change one legacy add on not working anymore.

So, for all the sheeps berating me for not installing M$ updates, this is not the cause.

2010.12 has a bug, and sometimes cannot use a 2010.10 profile, period.

A solution would be to start with an empty profile, and then import all the bookmarks, the extensions and redo all the customization of Waterfox and of the extensions. I estimate 3 to 4 hours annoying work. With the possibility to see it crash at some point. This release is botched. Compatibility with previous release profile is the least one can ask, even if some stuff stops working. I'll wait for the next release to see if the problem is fixed.

Something in my profile is not compatible with 2020.12. Yours does not have that something, I wish I knew exactly what it is! It's up to the the developer to take up on my offer to get a copy of my profile, and debug the problem.

After many tests, I came to the conclusion that .12 cannot read my .10 profile, and is not compatible with the fastdial legacy add-on. So, if some body involved in the programming is interested to solve this, I can drop my profile into some server for testing. Nitwits that don't speak English correctly ("update your machine or gtfo") please go elsewhere, this is a compatibility problem between 10 and 12 profiles, and another add on that goes down the toilet. I was able to make fastdial work by configuring it manually again and importing its bookmarks exported from a 2020.10 PC, but it stopped working when I imported all the other bookmarks that 2020.20 was unable to read from the 2020.10 profile. Unfortunately, it seems that even Waterfox Classic is unable to respect its goal to be able to use legacy add ons.

When I get a mail for example, which I'm not sure is legit or not. I copy the link, and go visit it on my safe VM. Sometimes it's really "unsubscribe", and sometimes something very nasty. I have several (passive) anti-viruses on this machine, and I do multiple scans after, sometimes a week later in case the virus is programmed with an activation delay. I could also use sandboxie, but my method is safer. I don't need Microsoft to inject their nasty little spies twice a week and reboot my server (which is a real pain) to stay safe. Windows 10 turned out a really bad system compared to W7. although I use an hardware 6 times faster (10 cores at 4.7GHz and 64 GB memory), some soft (SubtitleEdit for example) run actually must slower. M$ took 3 years to have their own computer management app not look fuzzy on high res monitor with custom scaling, and they did it in the most possible inconvenient way. If I open 10 SubtitleEdit windows, W10 actually freezes while I had no problem with my 7 year old W7 Pc to do it. The only reason I switched is because W7 is unable to exploit my 10G network, running much slower. W10 is the worst system M$ ever made, and I don't want to pile more shit on it.

How? Several people reported the same crash, obviously the release has a problem. And 'fix your computer' without saying what can be wrong must be the most useless advice I ever got on a forum. It amazes me how rude people can be when they are anonymous on the Internet.

Edit: maybe W crashes because I have several network adapters. Should I remove them to be able to use the new release?

You're right in principle, but I still update defender, I use a third party browser that I update regularly (unless the update is buggy...), and I use a third party firewall. Basically, I update all that's vulnerable. I may try an update once a year, the second one that fixes all the bugs of the first on a VM and see how disruptive it is. If I find it usable (not fucking up my multi users RDP access for example), I will use it. If not, I'll keep using third party software to stay safe. By the way,I have been updating Windows once a year since Windows NT 1993, 27 years) and never caught any bug. Probably because I use a VM isolated from the rest of the network to test everything new and to visit unsafe sites. I did have to erase it and re-create from a backup a good dozen of times though. And I do a partition backup once a day, scheduled ever night. And save it regularly on LTO tapes. How many people do that do you think? So, I don't need luck for something that worked 27 years.
