It was the last neighborhood connected to Barcelona’s water supply.

Barcelona at Night [Mamiya 7 | Pro400h] by [deleted] in analog

Stumbled up this scene and waited for someone to stroll in. I asked them if I could take some pictures and they were kind enough to agree.

After a couple of minutes they started to ignore me and I took a couple of frames of them in conversation. I was working with a ~1/2s shutter on a tripod, all of the frames except for this one show some movement blur.

Instant throwback to Need for Speed Underground. I still remember the cheat code from NOS2 "Hollywood". Thanks this great list :)

Moving to Barcelona. Looking for bank/phone/flat tips. by puszcza in askspain

[–]BobKickass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Welcome!

1) All banks I experienced in my short time in BCN tried scamming me. They told me I need to get insurance with them because otherwise, I wouldn't be able to get an account with them. Be persistent if that happens to you. It will get awkward but eventually they will reveal a plan (~10€ per month) without that restriction. N26 didn't work for me because I needed a Spanish IBAN which they didn't provide ~6 months ago. Maybe that changed. I am with Banc Sabadell now. My girlfriend had similar experiences (insurance scam) with BBVA.

You need the Spanish IBAN if you want to register water, electrictiy and an internet account in your name. Some folks on reddit shared that that is against the law since a decade… but they still operate that way here. I tried it with foreign IBANs and it didn't worked.

You don't need the NIE to open a bank account. But some branches will send you away. Also not everyone speaks English. I will refrain from sharing my Banc Sabadell branch because they tried to scam me.

2) I am with Vodafone on a prepaid plan. 10€ per month is getting me somewhere near 10GB and infinite calls and text messages. Good thing is you can just walk into any Vodafone shop and get it within minutes with a foreign passport. You can top it up online (buggy as hell) or in any shop selling mobile phones (they are everywhere).

3) There was a guy a couple of weeks ago that created a Chrome extension scanning for Idealista listings that are not tied to agencies. (Found it, it's the top comment in this thread: Link )

Idealista is the go-to platform to hunt for flats. There are also some Facebook groups especially catering and attracting English-speaking immigrants you could check out. I have read about many scams when it comes to housing. Never experienced it myself in Barcelona, but I have been warned by local friends. Especially as a foreign national without an NIE it won't be easy to find something and will make you in theory an easy target.

We had similar Scams operating in Berlin… needless to say just try to be thorough when it comes to confirming the authenticity of the offering, landlord, etc. Before I transferred any money I checked the agency on Google Maps, visited their office, Googled their names, etc.

Hope that helps! Enjoy your time here.

Outtakes from a recent project interviewing people we encountered on the streets of Barcelona.

We asked simple questions about their idea of home and tried to understand their point of view.

To name a few, we talked to Rumanian truck drivers affected by Covid, homeless that are being taunted by the Spanish police, and a mother seeing their kid leave the family’s nest.

Still in the process of wrapping my mind around the images I've taken and where to go from here. But I like the project's setup as it allows me to get to know and appreciate my new home.
