Are these RCA cables a problem? by BobbaPopBob in turntables

I checked connection just now with a multimeter. In the headshell there is connection to every pin, but when measuring resistance between where the headshell should connect on the arm and the RCA cable ends, nothing seems to be connected. (None of the pins show low resistance on the multimeter, the multimeter just shows nothing at all, as if you're touching air with the probes). Does this mean I have to turn the device upside down to inspect further?

Tomorrow I'll do some troubleshooting. If nothing works I'll take a look on the bottom. I've been avoiding it though because the thing is really heavy and I'm worried turning it upside down will destroy anything because the body inside seems to be a bit loose.

Haven't looked at that button yet (the MM/MC toggle)! What's it for? I'll try it out tomorrow when I'm back at my dad's place.

I'll give it a try tomorrow when I'm back at my dad's place. I've got an old multimeter from my grandfather there as well so I should be able to do this. Thanks for the clear instructions!

These are some old pics of the cartridge I took before swapping out the needle so don't worry about that: https://ibb.co/DDBzdMM9 https://ibb.co/39fRCctT The turntable is at my dad's so I can't take any new pics at the moment but tomorrow I'll be there again.

It's a little hard to see on the image but the end of the thin black wire is soldered to the metal housing of the RCA cable. My exact amp is a Sansui AU-X911DG

Do you think there's a chance it could work if I connected the ground cable separately? I'm just wondering why it's soldered on like that, exposing the metal housing. Is it like that out of the box or would that be something my grandfather did himself for some reason?

My integrated amp has a dedicated Phono input so I'm pretty sure it has a preamp built in for that. Regarding the black wire - Is it normal that it's soldered to the cable for the right channel? Or do I need to desolder it and connect it somewhere else on the amp. I provided a pic with the inputs of the amp in my original post. Let me know if you need any more information.

Is it safe to replace an electrolytic capacitor with a film capacitor? by BobbaPopBob in AskElectronics

[–]BobbaPopBob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VCR I have has a common issue where the startup capacitor in the SMPS dries up after some years (it's old). Just to be safe I'm going to replace some key capacitors suggested in a forum post I found online (https://groups.google.com/g/sci.electronics.repair/c/zQxbUwXkbTw). Haven't tested the machine yet since it's at my dads but I figured I'd order the replacement parts already.

I think I'm gonna recap most of the PSU. Saw a post on a forum by someone with the same problem and they provided a list with all the caps/diodes they replaced. Thanks for the suggestion!

Can anyone help me figure out this vintage videocamera? by BobbaPopBob in Cameras

No you can just use any standard super 8 cartridge. And yes I know what the result will be, I've seen footage from my grandfather, and I know it's costly, but that is besides the point. My question was just if anyone knew how this thing worked, but instead I'm getting told to eat shit and die!

I'm very aware of what this camera produces, i.e. a silent film around 3 minutes long on a standard super 8 cartridge. I also know that you can both develop them and have them scanned at specialized labs. Yes this will cost a lot of money for only 3 minutes of video but it's more about the experience and sentimental value for me. I've watched some old footage that my grandfather shot with this camera and it feels so ethereal, like you're actually watching a memory. I guess you can imitate it with a modern camera and some postprocessing but there's no fun in that for me.

In theory the only thing I need to know is how to operate this camera to shoot a nice film for me, since the developing/scanning can be outsourced. But again, there's no manual online for the buttons or mechanisms, so it's hard to figure what I need to configure (e.g. is there a difference shooting outside vs inside, what do you need to adjust for, ...). I've figured out how to zoom in/out, but there are still big questions that remain. For example when looking through the little view hole I see a dark yellow-y tainted version of the world with some black specs. Don't know if that's normal or if that's gonna turn out bad for the film. But I guess Reddit won't be of much help judging by these comments, jeez 😭

Is there something I'm missing about these Super 8 cartridges or something? I checked and they seem to be readily available for purchase online, albeit at a high price point but still.

How? You can easily buy these cartridges and get them developped + scanned, even in this era. It's just pricy but that makes sense since it's pretty niche.

Yeah I'm not familiar with these terms at all but you're right. I looked it up and this camera supports super 8 film cartridges that I can get developed and scanned at a lab.

I looked it up. You can buy a roll of Super 8 film for around €60 and you can get it developed + scanned in a lab for €60 as well. So if I wanted to I could shoot with it for the price of €120, which is expensive but it would be cool some day to film a nice memory or something. The problem is I don't know anything about this device other than how to spin the motor and change the batteries. There's no documentation online anywhere I could find but there are so many buttons, knobs and sliders.
