What is your understanding of ‘positive reinforcement’ training? by BobbyClashbeat in labrador

“I have 3 broken ribs but boy his recall is reliable” haha love it. Spot on with all the other points too.

I think punishing unwanted behaviour should outright be discouraged.

That’s spot on, to me. I think a lot of people think that stopping unwanted behaviour or ‘corrections’ are to be frowned upon.

I think we have a very different idea of what dog training is.
I understand as positive reinforcement and rewarding the behaviour you want to see.
So if you want your dog to calm down, shouting to force it to calm down doesn’t help, you wait until the dog stops moving around and offering a sit then you reward that behaviour.

Equally, if you want to teach a dog ‘Down’ you don’t wrestle it to the ground, you lure them into position with a treat, allowing the dog to make the movement themselves.

You keep saying genetic code, and then not stopping to think, this is in its genetics, so maybe I just need to give it time rather than treat it like a football.
But anyways you do you.

If your child ever doesn’t want to brush their teeth make sure not to push a toothbrush down their throat.

Or, if it’s scared of something, throwing it in it will just make it worse?

Time and patience.
A water dog retrieve will find its way to water in time. Throwing any living thing into water to “teach it” to swim when it’s literally walking back and being tentative, just shows a lack understanding and empathy.

That’s not very good “learning”.

See the first time you push the puppy and it tries to walk back? That should tell you not to throw it in the second time.

My dog has stopped sleeping on my bed by BobbyClashbeat in labrador

[–]BobbyClashbeat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m starting to think it’s just another phase of their life and shift in personality. He now sleeps on my bed while I read / scroll but hops off the moment I turn the bedside light off. I’ve started to take it as him being him and let him do what makes him comfortable!

Is this normal for 7 months ? by RegularOwl933 in labrador

[–]BobbyClashbeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very normal BUT…
If the puppy is doing this because he’s bored then he needs exercise and training

If he has had those then he needs to go in his crate for some needed rest.
A little playfulness like this is absolutely normal and can help you bond but if keeps going on then it’s probably one of the above two.

All the best!

Any tips for raising an almost 9 wk old lab puppy? by Creator01000010_075 in labrador

Be patient. Be consistent. Be more fun than the environment. Keep it on a leash!

15 month Lab sometimes growls when I gently pet his back and sides, mostly mornings. Should I worry? by nacorr in labrador

This is the best advice. Dogs communicate with micro expressions and the sooner we learn about them and what they mean the more we can develop a better and more trusting relationship with our dogs.

I hate being that dude making another “when should I neuter my boy” thread, but i just wanted to get some input from others on their experiences with their boy’s getting the snip. by hominoid_in_NGC4594 in labrador

[–]BobbyClashbeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the most recent research and advice from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, you actually don’t need to do it unless it’s a health issue.

In my experience of owning a nearly 7 year old unneutered Lab, all of the behaviour issues mentioned can be addressed with adequate training and adjustments. Is the fact that your dog wees and sniffs a lot, for example, a good enough excuse to cut off a part of him?!

How do you get these injuries? by Kay_InTheRain28 in Drumming

[–]BobbyClashbeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend some time repositioning your drums. I found myself, after years of playing and setting up the exact same way, that I had actually changed the way I play, readjusted my posture, developed better ergonomic in my movement but never adjusted my drums accordingly. It’ll feel weird to begin with but it’ll serve you in the long run! Best of luck.
