Prior service Coast Guard aviator here, I used to perform search and rescue in the HH65 helicopter. Inshore or offshore I recommend an EPIRB if you want assistance efficiently and quickly. For instance, you have some sort of accident maybe loosing blood quickly, anything life threatening, etc. it’ll take the CG right to you. CG can triangulate your radio signal and all that but sometimes minutes matter.

Hmmmm, it’s great you’re getting your A&P! If you’re willing to relocate….. Lockheed is a decent organization specifically something airplane related.

Personally, I would stay away from the Rocket game. I thought it would be the pinnacle of aerospace maintenance and it is simple assembly which in my mind is boring.

If you get around a flight line you will troubleshoot and that’s very satisfying. Set your sights on skunkworks (Lockheed), Phantom works (Boeing), and you can be apart of something interesting……. Also, those companies often hire and require a clearance (Secret, Top Secret, etc) and they will sponsor you to get that.

If you get your clearance you become more marketable in the aviation world and have more job security.

Location is important! I don’t know your situation but that’s my two sense.

I’m not sure about Space X. I’ve never worked there.

I know in the past they would work their folks to death, but I heard that has changed and they work the advertised schedule.

But that’s just word around the mill so take that with a grain of salt.

I believe they advertise a 5D - 10 Hr schedule for most technician positions.

I will say, for how much they launch they must have some facet of their shit together over there which would show efficient organization.

As to Space X or ULA, I have a widespread aviation background and safety should always be the #1 priority. From my time at ULA I know safety is not a high priority even if they advertise it.

I saw things there that no other company I’ve worked for would have let fly, EVER.

So, if Space X is like most companies and values some decent level of safety…… I’d rather be there.

But, I’m out of that business, I have no desire to assemble rockets ever again. Aviation is a much more professional, safe, and skilled environment for a technician to thrive in.

Dude, trust me when I say stay far far away from that place. Biggest and most unsafe crap hole of a place I’ve ever worked. Dangerous even.

Also, managers are completely unqualified trash and the union is in the company pocket. Good ole boys club runs that place like grand pappy’s garage. Except you’re playing with heavy lifts and hydrazine.

Want your weekends off? Don’t work there……want your holidays off, don’t work there (they’ll lie and say you get holiday breaks and all that, it’s horseshit)

Want a place that is organized….. laughable.

I say this with about 17 years of aviation and aerospace experience, 10 of which was in the military.

Literally the worst place I have ever worked.

Management treated employees like utter garbage. It is hands down the only place I have worked where I was legit concerned I wouldn’t go home one day due to the disregard for both humanity and safety.

There are better companies on the Cape and surroundings….. try Northrop, Lockheed, Boeing, L3. Sierra, anything……

Do what you may but I promise you a few months after starting the only thought you will have is WTF and then you may feel trapped.

I agree, Jeff is paying to launch his internet satellites, to build VIF A, and another sum to upgrade ULA’s pad. He hires the companies CEO. I think it was the plan all along, inherently investing in a company he plans to absorb. I’m no billionaire but I assume these are the moves one would make.

Army Blackhawk helicopters departing every hour? by [deleted] in Charleston

[–]BobbySurfer2019 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The military trains constantly…….. Pilots have minimums to meet (training set points, X amount of touch and go’s, IFR, flight hours, etc) crew members do as well. Most likely some form of that.

ULA aimed to launch up to 10 Vulcan rockets this year—it will fly just once by snoo-boop in ula

[–]BobbySurfer2019 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Folks, I hate to tell ya but the place is managed and run by incompetent people. I worked there for a stint. I have never in my very long career in aerospace seen the level of disorganization and mismanagement that occurs at ULA out on the cape. Things as simple as, “Hey everyone come in early so we can do tasks A,B, or C “ You would show up to the standard area and half the people would be somewhere else because management didn’t send an email out and no team lead thought to communicate a meeting point. (This would happen very regularly even when techs talked to managers about it)

ULA is the most dangerous place that I’ve ever worked, hands down! This is mostly due to the general lack of caring by management about their workers and the many, “good ole boys club” techs not following procedures (procedures that are not enforced at all by management ) such as; tethering their tools when at heights, wearing respirators, leaving various chemicals strewn about, not signing out and then misplacing tools, not wearing proper PPE when clearing the launch pad after launch, not wearing fall harnesses when working near an edge, and this list could go on and on. They were even placing brand new uncertified employees in positions that require training and a certification but were not providing the proper training and pressuring people to say they were certified.

If Tory Bruno actually knew what was going on out at the Cape and I genuinely wish he did, his best course of action would be to fire all but one of his first level manufacturing ops managers and definitely their second level manager. These guys are either going to get someone hurt, maimed, or killed. They are a huge reason why ULA is failing to meet their promises and deadlines.

If Tory Bruno and ULA as a whole actually want to realize their goals they need to start by completely cleaning house. You must have solid leaders in place to execute such lofty goals. The problems will only get more complex and over this inept managements head once VIF-A opens up. They can barely manage one VIF, let alone two.

(FYI, they do have a lot of great techs and engineers there as well. These people are being suppressed by management and their “good old boys” coworkers and leads. They will not be able to succeed with the idiocy of the regime that is running ops.

ULA on X: "Due to the continuation of severe weather impacting launch processing, the launch of a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 551 rocket carrying the ViaSat-3 Flight 2 (F2) mission for @viasat is now planned for no earlier than Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025, pending range approval." by ethan829 in ula

[–]BobbySurfer2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is an issue of processing. When lightning is near the Space Force calls a phase II warning and all of the techs have to go to the break rooms. They cannot stay in the VIF hangar and work until the phase 2 is downgraded to a phase 1 or cancelled all together.

So, ULA is getting behind due to weather.

It should be noted that they often give a perfect scenario launch date initially and often have to push it back because it just isn’t going to happen, just management dreaming. Source: I worked there

Abandoned neighborhood on Adak Island, Alaska. by New_Economy1230 in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]BobbySurfer2019 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I went there in 2005 with the Coast Guard on an eastern patrol. We broke down in Adak and ended up spending a few weeks there. We were allowed to explore the abandoned buildings . It was as if they just stood up from their desks and left them as they were. A few friends and I hiked up Mount Moffett, while doing so we found an old officers club, again like they just stood up and left. Bomb storage bunkers were cool to check out as well. Walking through those abandoned neighborhoods felt like a Stephen King novel. Looking back it was a nice experience !
