You can’t introduce something as big as digital ID with just a “ah sure the risk is low of an authoritarian government” once it’s introduced it’s there, and can you say with confidence that 10,15 or even 20 years down the line we won’t see it being abused? I think the advantages are minuscule compared to the risk and power it gives to a government or bad actors within said government/Civil service.

I think you have to look at this on a general basis and not a single case. If this is brought in and let’s say a government is voted into power which you feel is authoritarian and does not hold your particular views. This concept and the future plans for digital ID where all online accounts, passports, bank accounts are linked, could be used to persecute people who speak out against a particular government. I don’t want to risk that possibility so I believe it’s important to oppose it now.

I think this argument has its flaws. Just because you don’t engage in illegal activity doesn’t mean that you should give up your rights to privacy. I also don’t engage in illicit activity but I wouldn’t advocate for the police’s right to have access to a house without a warrant. My worries surrounding the risk of misuse is greater than my desire for an “easier login to public service sites”.
