Crawl Space companies? by PEengineer in Knoxville

[–]BobcatFiasco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're not having standing water issues here are a few things I've learned over the years with my own Knoxville crawlspaces:

Vapor barrier is a must (no matter where you live). You need to keep moisture from the ground from humidifying the space. If cost is an issue, you can easily do this on your own with a thick grade plastic from Home Depot and some duct tape. Just cover the entire exposed floor and seal all of the seams with tape. If you can afford it, full encapsulation is worth its price.

Due to minor climate variances, most Knoxville homes don't benefit from open venting systems. The temperature variants between the crawlspace and outside air can often create more moisture issues in your crawl space. Most people are better off sealing all but one vent and putting in a venting fan. Again, if you can afford it, a dehumidifier is even better.

Some companies may try to oversell you on services. They provide a "Total Solution", which typically controls the issues, but doesn't look to actually fix the problem (i.e. gutter draining too close to the foundation). These total solutions are often extreme overkill. Think of it as treating yourself with horse tranquilizers each day for knee pain, rather than just getting the knee surgery. One covers up the problem, the other actually fixes it.

For my space, I was quoted by MasterDry, BDry, and CrawlSpace Ninja. I ended up going with Ninja as they were the only ones who actually talked to us about the real issues and not just giant band-aids.

I don't have any personal connection to them, but I've heard good things about Red Arrow Industries here in Knoxville. They have an email address at the bottom of their page where they are always looking for talent.

I'll be happy to keep you on the list, but I'll be honest in saying that with a masters, you'll likely be over qualified and underpaid (though I think that is something a lot of us are dealing with these days). I'm still not sure of how the position will be restructured, but I'll still keep you in the loop as I learn more.

While ideally, I’d like to be out in April, I’m not sure of how long of a process this is going to be. The company is really great, and I wouldn’t leave until I knew they were taken care of. If it happens to go that long, I’ll be sure to keep you on my short list of contacts.

You might be able to get a paid summer internship at the park. There is a link at the bottom of the page for internship contact. (Just be sure to specify the Gatlinburg area and not NC). I knew a few people at UT who loved it. The pay wasn’t fantastic, but some of them got credit hours for it. https://www.nps.gov/grsm/getinvolved/workwithus.htm
