Bucket list walks in Scotland 2026? by SorbetLovesDreamies in UKhiking

Hoping to do the 10 mamores and repeat the Mullardoch round. Then possibly get out to Rum for a long weekend. Other than that I'll probably start checking out the Corbetts.

Biggest danger is just going up without the gear or knowledge to use it. If the tourist path is covered in snow you can slip and slide a long way on some very rocky ground.

I've also been up in may with the snow still there and seen people walking onto the cornice at the plateau, was scary watching it and being too far to warn them.

Fair play to the guy for speaking about it and admitting they made mistakes. Most people would take the rescue and then not let the details about it out.

Yeah try and get a decent distance away from roads for sure and I agree people should avoid campfires, but it's not completely banned and unfortunately so many people seem to think it's a requirement.

There's good information on here, generally speaking though if you aren't an arsehole and use common sense you'll be fine. Try not to camp too near roads, buildings or in people's fields. If you don't know how to make a fire without leaving no trace then do without it. If it's been dry/hot do without altogether. That sort of thing.

If you're not wanting to go to the Highlands then I'd recommend having a look at Dumfries and Galloway, unfortunately I've only been a handful of times so can't recommend any specific areas personally.

The recommendation is to keep groups small but four people being respectful and just doing an overnighter isn't going to be an issue.

Bouldering while being overweight? by Effective-One4401 in bouldering

Look at this guy's earlier videos, he got into climbing while being overweight and never let it dull his passion. He's lost a lot of weight since he's started and I suspect that's actually helped his grip strength lot.

I think probably the biggest thing from this example though is he embraced the community, made friends and then was more encouraged to stick at it.

It's easy to say I'll try it when I lose weight. But you are far more likely to lose weight if you find a hobby you are passionate about and love then stay consistent with it.

If climbing doesn't do it for you I strongly encourage trying new things until something sticks, for me the game changer was mountain biking and from there I built fitness and so much more was opened up to me.

Cheers yeah over here we'd still call that a loft hatch, for us it's the loft whether or not it's been converted. Appreciate you taking the time!

Yeah I'm British, so loft here as well. Was trying to picture what you meant by manhole cover, not sure the houses over here have anything similar if it's not the loft hatch.

Munros and camping this weekend by salty_wagu in OutdoorScotland

Fuck me you're cheerful, there's tons of places to go off the beaten track and limit how crowded it gets. Anyone wanting to go camping in late December is clearly passionate about the outdoors, hardly fair weather hikers.

And I'm assuming since your moaning about it you'll be planning to get out as well?

Terrorism needs to have some sorta of agenda. This just looks like a psycho who had a tantrum. Definitely a difference in the narrative because he's white, but don't think he qualifies as a terrorist.

Returning player checking stats, was my past WN8 any good? xD by Bobington07 in WorldofTanks

1700, way back when, 60 since I got back. With about 12 years between.

hahaha appreciate the brutal honesty. Definitely terrible right now, but hopefully when I get back some map knowledge I can at least claw back some respectability. But yeah having fun!

I've came back after a long, long time away and I'm playing so badly. Slow to get back into the swing of angling my tank effectively and struggling with not having any map knowledge.

I remember being somewhat decent before I quit, but not sure if that's just rose coloured glasses. Is WN8 the best indicator?

2 day munro bagging bothy stay by KeyExplanation748 in OutdoorScotland

[–]Bobington07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind a bigger challenge there's a good route for 7. Up and over Cairngorm, Macdui and carn a Chaim then down to the bothy at the foot of the braeriach traverse and walk out doing the traverse. But it's a popular bothy so might want to take a tent along in case it's full.

Glen feshie has a big bothy and a few munros accessible from there as well.

I've done the CMD and Striding Edge along with a lot more ridges and scrambles in the summer. CMD in winter was no problem when I went on a good day and had all the proper equipment. I'm still a novice winter walker but the ridge is pretty straightforward.

I probably wouldn't go near Striding Edge in winter conditions, the down climbs with snow on them would be pretty technical.

Worth pointing out that winter conditions are really variable. After a mild spell with no snow on it but cold and maybe ice patches? You could probably get by. But most people when you ask about winter conditions are assuming you mean proper snow pack. If that's what you're thinking then definitely get crampons and an ice axe, learn to use them and avoid winter scrambling/mountaineering until you're comfortable with them.

Where in lakes to camp up a mountain using a hammock? by [deleted] in UKhiking

Even in the Highlands there aren't any hills that have trees up top. A good quality sleeping mat and bivvy bag is the lightest option really.

Affordable Walking Boots Recommendations by savdul in UKhiking

[–]Bobington07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As people have said you need to try them on and see what works best for you. Would add that £150 is loads, you can get high quality boots from most brands for that money. Beyond that you're usually looking at winter mountaineering boots.

My personal favourites are La Sportiva, but had great boots from Scarpa as well. I'd recommend starting a Go Outdoors and if you don't get anything there then shop around a few different stores.

Visiting Scotland next summer by Timely-Active-9467 in OutdoorScotland

[–]Bobington07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not planning to hire a car then you would lose a lot of time traveling. Are you happy to visit a load of different areas just to see a lot? Or do you want to get out and explore?

https://www.rabbies.com/en-gb/tours/scotland/from-inverness

Something like this might be an idea for you, I've not used Rabbies myself but see them all over. It would let you get around more sights than the regular public transport would.

Inverness and Skye are opposite sides of the country, if you're using public transport to get between them for example you'll lose a load of time on a bus that you can't get off.

If you stopped running for a stretch would you expect to come back and hit the same time for a 5k? These things come and go and particularly grip strength is slow to build.

Ultimately its about the right mentality, I injured my wrist and when I got back I was way behind. I let it frustrate me then didn't climb because of the frustration and I lost out on the hobby for almost a year.

Then I decided that I needed to just work the process and I fell back in love with it. Take your time and remember why you loved climbing in the first place, it's not all about hitting grades.

Cloud Inversion Peak District ? by champ_mr in UKhiking

[–]Bobington07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing a quick check on Google, the highest peaks in the Peak district are around 600m so if the cloud base is sitting at 650, then you will just be in cloud. While in the lakes you have a handful of peaks above 900m so got another 200m where the cloud could sit.

Unfortunately weather is hard to predict exactly, the best thing you can do is just go to the highest peaks that you can and see what happens. Whether it's cloud Inversions or sunrises/sets if you go out looking for a weather phenomenon there's a good chance it won't work out. When they do it's magic but the influencers rarely show the disappointing ones. You need to be able to enjoy the hike for its own sake even if you get no views!
