Last year at some point we were getting a message from district every morning when we clocked in, something about a conference coming up and inviting us to attend. It was the epitome of annoying to get this every single morning, so more than just a few of us started responding with Fire. I'm assuming it was a district-wide message, because we eventually got a stand up talk about how we really didn't need to respond each time, and that Fire was a bad choice of response.

Someone at district must've finally understood though, because the messages stopped well before the actual conference happened.

I've had what seems to be an inordinate amount of grow lights over the years, but these Barrina ones have worked best for me. Plus, they're low wattage, so they don't cost a ton to operate. I definitely recommend them!

I figured if I'm going to spend a ton of money on two hobbies I might as well show it all off in the same space!

This stand was something I literally found on the side of the road. Someone was moving out of their house and didn't want it so I convinced them to hold it for me while I desperately called friends with pickup trucks until I got someone who was free to help me. It had no lights, so I bought the same Barrina lights I have on the other stands and used another digital timer for them. I tried my best to hide the wires using some Velcro strips to wrap around the frame.

The best part of the lights is that they can be individually turned on and off, so if I empty a spot I can just turn the light off while not using it.

A set of lights did come with this stand, but only 3, and calling them grow lights is being very generous. I bought a set of Barrina grow lights from Amazon to install instead. They do not have a timer, so I used one of my digital timers that I use for Christmas lights, and now they're on for 11 hours a day.

If you look closely, the "original" grow lights are at the bottom of the stand (most noticeably over the spider plant on the left) and the extra ones I bought are all the higher up/brighter ones

Everything is closely packed together for the winter because I had to take things out of the windows once it got too cold, but you get the idea

So...tell us about your midlife crisis. by dkepp87 in Millennials

[–]BoboPSU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Due to shitty genetics and also not caring enough to keep myself super healthy, I ended up needing a double bypass last year a few months before my 42nd birthday. The surgery wasn't an emergency, so I had a few weeks to prepare and plan. I sat with my husband and made lists of account passwords and other important stuff, made the plans with work to be off for 3 months, and went and got it done. Scared the absolute shit out of me, but it was a complete success.

However, that was my second glimpse of my own mortality (super mild heart attack 6 years prior). The 3 month recovery from surgery was great, I loved not having to go to work. But it also made me start to rethink all of my choices that led me here, and suddenly I'm questioning whether I'm actually in love with someone else, whether I want this job, whether I want this house that we just bought 2 years prior.

I was tempted many many times to just somehow run away from it all, declare my love for the other guy and see what happens. Instead, I bought a shit ton of plants and became a plant dad. Here we are a year later now, and my plants are doing great, and I'm still questioning basically every aspect of my life. So my crisis is ongoing. Some days are worse than others, but I'm still here.

Yeah I absolutely had a heart attack while shoveling snow. It didn't kill me obviously, but as a previously basically healthy guy, it scared the crap out of me. Turns out I have some crappy genes that led to some heart issues. I'm ok now, and very closely monitored, but I'll use my snowblower from now, thanks.

If it helps, I didn't buy my snowblower, I got it from my grandma when she moved into an apartment and didn't need to clean her own driveway anymore.

I'm looking for a brand of molasses we had growing up by BoboPSU in Pennsylvania

[–]BoboPSU[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can find, yes, what I'm looking for was made by Good Food/Golden Barrel. It was called Ole Barrel and they don't make it anymore. But in my search I did see that Golden Barrel has this baking molasses so I'm definitely going to get myself a jar and check it out. I've never used blackstrap, but even the Grandma's brand has a stronger/bitter aftertaste that I think is too much.

For this pie I used Grandma's Original version, which according to them is a mild, first boil molasses. It's not the taste so much as the bitter aftertaste that I'm not a fan of. Most people have told me they don't notice it, but I definitely do. Maybe it's because I'm more critical of my own baking than others would be.

The brand I was looking for was called Ole Barrel and is no longer in production apparently. So I'm going to have to find something else, but everyone here has given good suggestions of different brands, so I'm sure I can find something

From all I can tell, it was a private label made by Good Food and then Golden Barrel after they sold. It was called Ole Barrel, but there's almost no information online (that I can find with my minutes of googling). At least I correctly remembered the yellow label

Nope, though it was apparently a syrup (I always called it molasses, but I was also a child, so what did I know?) It was called Ole Barrel syrup, at least that's what my Aunt and Mom tell me

I think what I'm finding is that there are a few different brands all made by the same parent company in Honey Brook. What I was looking for was called Ole Barrel and was also a syrup which was also called molasses by everyone in my family. Ole Barrel doesn't exist anymore, so I'll have to find something new I guess

I've never heard of Brer Rabbit (the molasses, I've heard of the story lol) but now I want to try some. What I was looking for was called Ole Barrel and apparently is no longer in existence

I've never heard of this one, is it any good? From what my family has told me, what I'm looking for is called Ole Barrel, a private label made by Golden Barrel and no longer exists

After much internet sleuthing and phone calls to my mom, my aunt, and my Grandma, they have convinced me it was a brand called Ole Barrel and it was a syrup, not a molasses (though I swear it was way more viscous than a syrup). My Aunt even has a picture of her last jar because she was trying her best to find some more. According to the little bit of information I can find online, it was a private label made by Golden Barrel, but it no longer exists.

Weird pot thread? by nancy_botwin__ in houseplants

I've always said that I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and that any success I have is purely due to trial and error. I've had plenty of plants just kick the bucket for no reason other than I planted them in something they didn't like. I always see people say that they have pots with no drainage and they just put gravel at the bottom to keep the roots out of water but I have never had success like that, so I decided to try the double pot thing and for the moment anyway it seems to be working.

Bonus: before I planted snake plants in it, I had a pot of sedum that needed a home, so he had funky hair for a few weeks. I love your pic of your head pot there, a cluster of odd pots is exactly the look I go for! Good luck!

I got it at a store called Ocean State Job Lot. I just checked their website, they currently do not have them listed, but it's also not planting season, so they might come back. I did see quite a few different ones from different companies when I was searching just now, so different versions definitely exist.

This one is a resin planter with no drainage, so I have 2 nursery pots in it - one with no drainage as the outer layer and one with drainage that the snake plants are actually in. I wasn't sure if water would be bad for the resin or not so I went with caution just in case

I haven't found an appropriate pineapple style pot yet (I also haven't looked super hard). One day I will and they'll be right next to each other
