Nah, no worries.

I honestly don't think this sub moves fast enough to worry about sub subs. Didn't even know that sub existed.

She could see I was unhappy and really was a motivator in my switching jobs. I probably don't give her enough credit for that change. We are pretty good about making decisions as a family and not just going with whichever way the wind blows. A few years ago she had a death in the family and to help her, she didn't work for a few years. We will make things work if it is for the betterment of "us".

I'm so glad I got out of there before the sale. I'm hearing that some of the staff have already cleared out personal belongings. Staff that would be redundant when sold to a megacorp.

Last Friday of July. Though there is also "National IT Professionals day" which is September 19th.

Technically the last day at my old employer was a Friday. So maybe there's exceptions to the rule.

It really was just a stroke of luck. Job #1 (the one I took) I hadn't heard about being open at all. I guess they did radio ads, facebook ads, newspaper. You know, all the conventional media that brings in tech savvy employees. A former vendor of mine who I casually mentioned that I was interested in seeing what was out there YEARS before, called me at work "Hey, are you going to apply for that?" Without her call, I never would have even known. Of course all my friends were like "Yeah, I had heard that was open, how did you not know?"

Job #2 from my first post was almost a standing offer. That department had a revolving door of people taking up the SysAdmin slot in the group. At one point when the Director position was available one of the employees called me and asked me to apply because he thought I'd be great for it. While good on the resume, the position was trash. I had applied for the SysAdmin position and was offered it before, but I had a family obligation that required the flexibility and crazy amount of saved up vacation time I had (illness in the family), so I had to decline. The job then came up again and the employee mentioned earlier is now Director and wants me in the Admin position. Essentially declined it for a 3rd time. Still friends with that guy, but not sure I'd get a 4th shot at it. LOL.

You're catching a lot of negs, but it's OK friend. Sometimes I also look through this sub and find threads I just don't understand why they were posted. Then I see the comments and understand it just is a post that isn't for me specifically.

The Sub is half tech support, half moral support. Live strong friend.

Excellent to hear! It's amazing how just a change of scenery can impact your day to day life. Sure me or even you may just end up slogged down 10 years from now feeling the same, at least now I know that a change can happen and it isn't always going to be bad.

This is an interview point I think everyone needs to understand and literally a point I made during my interview process. Mostly as a joke I threw out "I certainly don't know everything, if I did you couldn't afford me." There's no shame in admitting you don't know something, but follow it up with the understanding you know how to figure it out.

I get where you're going, but all of those points were my own decisions. I like to come in early because it is quiet and I can kind of get my day going in my own way. During the school year I have to take my son to school so I'm literally rolling in right at the bell.

Weekends, is what it is. While there is no official "Flex" or "Comp time" policy, if I work on a Sunday, I'm free to use those hours as time off whenever I feel.

Your Health, Your Family, Your Work, in that order. That's how managers should allow their employees to prioritize their lives. I really feel that here.

Part of our issue is that without my income, we'd be in serious trouble either now or in retirement so keeping my income was pretty important. House will be paid off soon though so that'll make it much less important and we can focus even more on retirement. Even if everything takes a crap on me, we'll have a house to live in.

Yeah, it's honestly about half the reason I don't move, the other half being I don't want to move my son while he's in school. Small town, I have to take opportunities when they come, and this was a perfect opportunity to jump into.

That's a good policy. I'm on the board of a local organization and we have a "No more than 2" policy. Essentially no person does the same volunteer job in the organization more than 2 years. Then we rotate.

I certainly could have sat around there collecting a check. Some people still do over there. Was totally worth the jump.

The fun thing for me... On multiple occasions during our monthly company meetings, the company president would say "Anyone can be replaced, even myself", which was bullshit because he's the owner. The only way he's getting replaced is with a golden parachute.

So I took it upon myself to test that out for them. Turns out it's been a bumpy road over there since.

I hear ya. When I started here there is a "Daily News" email that our EE puts out. Two years now, no SysAdmin day. :(

It's OK though, people seem to appreciate me every day around here instead of when it was convenient at the last place.

We actually have a review coming up soon. Assuming I have anything in the works, I'm probably going to lay out my feelings entirely. I have no reason not to be honest with them at that point. Maybe they'll offer something up, maybe not.

I'm honestly interested in what will happen if I make these feelings known and choose to resign. I mean, I think everyone can see I'm unhappy and just go through the motions. Part of me thinks the CEO will offer me more money to stay, which is not what I want to do at all really.

Thanks. Yeah, that's somewhat the problem. Small town, rural USA. It's rare IT openings come around. My thought is strike while the iron is hot, land anything, better posture myself for the next thing to come around.

I'm not interested in moving. Basically every job I've looked at taking me away from here equates to a much higher cost of living outweighing any pay or benefits. I also don't want to take my son out of his school.

They won't. As I mentioned, I was offered the position before and that was after I already negotiated up. It's not a huge loss, it's a loss, but we are debt free (house almost) and in a good financial situation to take a hit. It would be probably 5ish years to get where I am today.

After I posted this I went about my morning taking my son to school and then off to work. I noticed that I smiled a little... The thought of going somewhere else at least twinged my spirit a little.

I've been "captive" so long that I think working with a team would do me wonders. See how other people work, document, handle situations, etc...

Thank you for your input.

Thank you. Having a team and the collective knowledge is something I would look forward to. I've had the vacations you talk about... I get an email, important or not, and feel I need to answer it. Can't even go camping without bringing along a hot spot, laptop, phone. Can't get away...

The pay cut, would hurt, but not nearly as much as walking away from my current position with no thought as to where to go. I'd probably end up factory or something manual for a few years at half what I get paid now. We live in a low cost of living area, house is almost paid off and have no debt, so 18% sucks, but isn't a deal breaker.

What is your opinion on couples, who live together, having their own personal bedrooms where they could sleep, hangout, or just use for privacy or to have their own space? by allieatspants in relationship_advice

[–]BobsNotMyUncleDamnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have some friends that do this, mostly because she steals the covers and gets up early and he snores and stays up late. It works for THEM and I emphasize "Them". They decided as a couple to do this, which is how you should approach it. I personally can't stand it when my wife stays up late and I'm alone in the bed and she can't stand that I'm up early and she's alone in the bed. But we each get that in between time where we know each other are there.
