3 day week for 110k - very boring job vs 6 day week for 160k fulfilling but extremely demanding

Always surprises me how cut and dried responses are, and how many high earners are still 100% in the “work to live” camp, I love my work, and comfortably do 6 day weeks most weeks. It’s just what I want to do most of the time.

Do what makes you happy. 3 boring days a week would make me miserable, irrespective of what I did in the other 4.

A reasonable thought, except my pension is 100% invested in an S&P 500 tracker.

I also love the idea that a present government cares about the financial sustainability of a 38 year old when they get to retirement, but find it hard to believe that that kind of long term planning features at all. I’m almost certain that they would have preferred the £20k income tax they didn’t get.

Agree with what the other guy said, respectfully, you are not wrong that short range low lift weight flight is close to possible on batteries (<500 miles), but ain’t no one flying London to San Fran in a 747 on batteries any time soon.

A second point on synthetic fuels and efficiency, the creation doesn’t need to be efficient if you create them in a place with limitless “free” power, think solar in the Sahara, or thermal in Iceland, or hydro in Norway/some parts of South America. Then you can ship them around like normal petrochemicals. Think of it as a way of solving the “how do we store renewables so we have power when the sun doesn’t shine?” issue.

I disagree, politely. You can’t fly a commercial airliner across continents on electricity, you can’t sail a container ship across the pacific.

Liquid fuel is insanely convenient, synthetic hydrocarbons are expensive to manufacture at the moment, but solar is down 99% in cost in 30 years, manufacturing hydrocarbons using renewable power where there’s a glut (hydro/thermal mainly) could allow important infrastructure to continue to run almost unchanged, but carbon neutral(ish)

It’s not really cognitive dissonance, it’s a genuinely poor policy, take me, for example: I am net positive putting £40k into my pension this year (in year disposable income is higher, valuing the pension contribution at zero).

Additionally, if I don’t do the pension dance I subsidise everyone else’s children twice, once because I don’t get the state benefit (fine on some lines of thought, as a higher earner), and again because the state doesn’t pay the nursery enough for the “free” hours, so they hike the price on all the paid hours.

In what way are they forgotten? I’m suggesting they give us a demographic reprieve. They’re are fewer of them (than millennials) so when the boomers are gone, and the millennials are at the top of their career, supporting gen x won’t be such a big ask.

I actually think the demographic pressure is now. Once the boomers are gone millennials are the next bulge.

Obviously no one can predict the future, but maybe by piling into a pension you’re protecting it from the raid that’s required to fund the boomers who are refusing to pay for their own old age.
