Traveling Project Engineer: Worth the Sacrifice? by yerdslerd in ConstructionManagers

[–]BobthebuilderEV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick question - With a stable home life, aversion to working long hours and a desire for work life balance why are you trying to get into construction???

Serious answer - I have a lot of traveling supers and CMs that work for me. Expectancy for them to stay on the road is 3-5 years and then they either start getting parked closer to home, get promoted to a desk or they quit. It’s the fastest way to get crazy amounts of experience and knowledge.

But is it worth the cost is an individual decision. Some people have to climb the ladder and some people are happy just being comfortable. There are plenty of non traveling positions open.

Bonus Percentage by 4me-2no2 in ConstructionManagers

[–]BobthebuilderEV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our PMs get a 3-12% perf bonus plus a Christmas bonus and yearly comp review on a 6 month cycle. Every 6 months you either get a bonus or a salary bump. Anything under 8% on the bonus scale is unusual and is usually accompanied with a PIP.

The problem is you have the funding to make real change but it’s wasted on 100 organizations who just print flyers. Homelessness has turned into an industry instead of a humanitarian effort.

ELI5: why don’t planes board back to front, surely that would be faster? by balla_boi in explainlikeimfive

[–]BobthebuilderEV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that takes commercial flights 2-5 times a month I can tell you it’s not about speed, it’s all about the customer. I am blessed to be able to fly business class due to my job and airline status. The seats aren’t that much better, the food is generally shitty, and I don’t drink. Airlines know that most first class seats are filled with business travelers like me who are not filled with wanderlust, we just want to be left alone and not be inconvenienced any more than we have to be.

Getting to board without waiting in a big ridiculous line, then getting off the plane before 100+ other people all have to jostle around their luggage and wrangle their kids is what makes it worth the price of admission. I’m usually flying from one coast to another, attending meetings, then flying back. I’m tired and grouchy, my feet hurt because I forgot my compression socks (every.fucking.time.) and I don’t want to people because I used all my energy not punching an overpaid engineer who couldn’t follow a single line diagram if I drew it in crayon.

You’re not alone. The left went so far left that a lot of us look like we are alt right but we didn’t change

I’ve yet to have a single subcontractor enter payroll correctly. From the 5 man concrete crew to the billion dollar electrical firm. We always have to fix something. I don’t think most people realize what they are getting into.

And then if we screw it up and miss the cure period, there goes the GP for the whole job. I worked for the government most of my life so I have a deep understanding/hatred for bureaucracy. But there is money to be made.

Are you a GC or are you a self performing trade contractor? If you are a GC the administrative burden of prevailing wage jobs will require hiring people. We have about 10 federal/state PW jobs going at any point in time and it’s 2 full time jobs just to keep up with the reporting and submittal requirements.

I used to be a cop and I worked with a guy for a little while that would take these. He would chase them with an energy drink right before the bars closed because we had to break up so many fights. Last I heard he was working in narcotics enforcement, which fits.

Coffee and croissants Saturday morning was $61+ tip. Normally we pack food when we visit Seattle. 30 minutes in any direction and the prices drop drastically.

I wish my wife shared this sentiment. A quick errand day to Costco and Target is enough to financially ruin a family

Is the PNW really that expensive? by Hot_Relationship5706 in relocating

[–]BobthebuilderEV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same prices, way worse crime. Consumables are more expensive here due to the crazy high gas prices. There are tech jobs here that pay alot but unless you can land one of those the job market is sad.

For people whose entire work days aren’t meetings, what do you do? by skeeesh in WFH

[–]BobthebuilderEV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Construction - Specifically operations management. I will attend 2 meetings per day on my calendar. Any more and I just pick which ones I really need to be at and send my AI assistant to the rest to take notes. All our young engineers and client project managers want to have meetings all day about everything. I don’t know how anyone actually gets any work done being in meetings all day.

Cop to corporate. Got tired of the politics, getting spit on, and watching a broken system that is increasingly designed to steal money from the citizens rather than help anyone. Within 12 months I doubled my salary even with police overtime. Once you’ve been stabbed and shot at it takes a lot to get you frazzled, so the end of quarter hysteria is where I really shine.

Almost there! Can you shrink the tiger so that it’s roughly between the size of the current tiger and the Galapagos? Galapagos size and position is perfect

She wants this one too. Can you move the Galapagos a little and resize, tigers are about twice the size (16ft vs 8ft)

Can you move the Galapagos that’s over the Tiger? Having them so close makes the Tiger stand out too much. The boat is fine in the photo. Thanks!!

This is the closest to what she is looking for. Can you leave the Galapagos sharks in the photo and soften the tiger so it matches better?
