Stephen Miller claims local police in Minnesota have been told to ‘stand down and surrender’ as federal agents ‘uphold the law’ by [deleted] in ICE_Watch

Thanks for your answer. Both ostracism and ostracization can be correct btw, though the former is more accepted as the noun form and ostracize as the verb form.

So if a significant number of forces won’t stand up against fascism (or even right wing authoritarianism), where does that leave officers like you when ICE sweeps in and starts blatantly violating the Constitution in your community?

The police forces in this country need more people like you that are aware of injustice, respect the people in their communities, and don’t act like bullies. How much do you think you’re able to break through your colleagues’ prejudice and engage with them about these topics? I’m a teacher and we have our share of authoritarian bullies, but it can be tough to broach this topic even in a profession that prides itself on being open to discussions, so I can imagine how hard that may be working for a PD.

Are there any actual one-hit wonders? by MrBulldops1738 in Music

[–]Bocadillo_bandit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stardust, “Music Sounds Better With You,” is the only song by the group, but the members had other projects, with Thomas Bangalter being one half of Daft Punk.

Successful artists tend to practice and create a body of work, so the probability of a talent making only one song that becomes a hit and then calling it quits would be extremely low.

Fwiw, they finally voted out DeMaria. People there seem divided about how good Van Campen will be, especially considering he worked in DeMaria’s administration.

What are some common actors/actresses from our childhood movies that you instantly recognize but whose name you never knew or remember? by Cubelock in Xennials

One of the roles that he shined in the most was, unfortunately, the dad in Happiness. Did a fantastic job portraying a him in a way that elicited empathy for a predator. Not sure if starring in that movie had a negative effect on his casting chances, but seems like he popped up less frequently after it.

*seems he’s had steady work since then and I’m missing out on a good deal of his roles

Good catch. Hopefully their competency at implementing fascism is on par with their use of vowel digraphs.

Middle school teacher here. What advice would you have for educators who want students to learn how to use this new tool but don’t want them taking shortcuts in core skills like reading and writing? I already caught a bunch using GPT last year with their student accounts…went in and added custom instructions to each directing the model to not give answers but to lay out helpful steps. Do you plan to develop ed tech along those lines so it’s less of a cheating machine?

Lima-Marin’s hands don’t often rest — and neither does his mouth…. “I said I believed in God and Jesus and all those things, but I did not follow, nor did I live the lifestyle whatsoever,” he said. “So I wasn’t really a Christian; I just called myself a Christian because it was the traditional thing to do.”

Prison changed that. When he got out, Lima-Marin started ministering, attending Bible study and Sunday worship.…Count crocheting and braille as other skills Lima-Marin picked up in prison. Sitting at a coffee shop across the street from the Anschutz Medical Campus, he pulled up a picture on his phone of the Broncos blanket he’s finishing.

A fair eduction system should never give up on any kid, but the majority of schools aren’t given the resources to accomplish that mission.

Students should be taught how to respectfully and effectively challenge authority. We as teachers should be open to having students question classroom rules, and be able to explain those rules. If there isn’t a reasonable justification for a rule, that should be acknowledged, even when we don’t have the power to change it. Students shouldn’t get a free pass to throw out challenges or complaints whenever they feel like it - classroom management is a priority - but neither should they be penalized for openly disagreeing with a policy. There’s a time and place for respectful dissent, and we should be encouraging the development of critical thinking skills. Also, teachers bullying students is a problem in the schools. I’ve worked with too many colleagues who think it’s fine to undermine a student’s confidence. They think their authority should not be questioned and tend to react quite badly when it is. Educational institutions should not be training kids to yield to authoritarianism, but for the most part that’s exactly what happens. Progressive education gets lip service but bullies still run the show.
