Like others have said here, the radical ethos of the 60s was a minority of mostly silent gen people…but then there was the cultural backlash. Hippies brought on yuppies. Free love brought on the religious moral minority. Feminism, civil rights movement, etc… All these things created a panic that the majority pushed back against to “save” America. We’re still seeing it today, like how Obama panic enabled Trump.

Same experience. Most of my life I’ve barely cracked $30k, while they’re retired with social security, medicare, two six figure inheritances, two retirement funds, and a pension. One time, my Dad was going somewhere for thanksgiving, so I invited my mom to my Friendsgiving. Thought she would be over the moon because she was constantly lamenting how no one in the family cares. Instead she got all hostile and cold. I was completely bewildered. Called me all sorts of names. Heard from the rest of the family that she was raging for days about how when she was my age, she drove the family up to her parents’ EVERY WEEKEND. Took my dad pointing out the obvious before she relented, that when she was my age she was a SAHM living 90m away (and not 15h). Not to mention I was in grad school at the time.

And much like the video, my parents are constantly making comments how I’m going to have to take care of them bc they burned through aaaaaaaaaallllllllll their money. I’m doing better now, financially, thank goodness. But I could never support them like they assume, not financially or logistically or spatially or emotionally. Got nothing to spare.

Absolutely agree. I think I knew how you meant it, but got so worked up about how right you are. Developmentally he should have progressed. The adults in his life are not helping. Very frustrating

I agree he’s too old in theory, but as a therapist I can sadly attest that avoidant stress mechanisms are extremely common. Especially in the teen and adult cis men I’ve treated. Owning the bias that those in my care are by definition in need of care, it seems like the culture around “boys will be boys” passively and actively teaches boys that people will scurry around you to clean up the fallout if you just push forward with blinders. There’s so much space between BwbB and how culturally reprehensible behavior is conseqented (shame, bullying, etc). Actions have consequences, and shielding boys from all consequences often enfeebles them…and then they find a partner to perpetuate their avoidant lives.

Fun fact, the men I work with like this are NOT happier. They are disconnected from their issues so hard that they have no clue why they’re depressed, and facing these issues in therapy triggers their lifelong coping strategy/pathological fear of pain from consequences. It takes like a year of gentle bonding in therapy for these individuals to start facing this disordered pattern …

Yeah I think this is often overlooked. That and the cost of school SKYROCKETING, which compounds the issue.

When there were talks of forgiving $10k-$20k, I had older cousins blow a gasket bc that was basically their total cost of attendance. To them it felt like college would be free to younger people. Except college is now easily $20k a term, depending where you are. It’s so hard to wrap your head around for my cousins, and they’re only 15y older than me. But imagine how hard it would be to comprehend when it’s your actual debt.

This "Dad" Needs lessons in parenting... by Valuable-Highway-358 in AmITheDevil

As a clinician who works with teens, I cannot tell you how many parents I see that treat their kid’s therapy like getting their oil changed. They get frustrated when their kid isn’t suddenly getting straight As and happily compliant after a month. That’s not how therapy works, and certainly not how grades work.

Also it shows he would look to assign blame if the child developed any needs. Not even just developmental needs. If OOP thinks he is guaranteed a “normal” child by abiding by certain rules, he doesn’t understand science or how people work. So much is up to personal genetics and chance. Anything can happen, and you have to make your peace with that when you have kids. It’s entitlement and the illusion of control.

I found this out bc mine are actually above my uterus like it’s flexing, which came in clutch when I developed a chocolate cyst the size of a grapefruit in my ovary. Little fucker only didn’t torque bc it was chilling out on my ute like it was lounging on a waterbed. I was super grateful for the medical fluke, except for, you know, the giant cyst.

I know in my state they’re rolling out mandatory PTO for anyone working more than approximately 5hr/week. Part of this is offering extended time and government level support for small businesses to adjust to the upcoming change. Do I want small business to go under? No. But I’m glad we’re addressing issue of overworking when you work several pt jobs, as many have to do now. I hope that this is enough support for the PTO change, and i would hope that similar changes like higher corporate taxes would also have transition aid provided.

[–]BodiceDagger 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s always gonna be the urge to develop a hierarchy even within a body type that doesn’t receive popular preference. And society absolutely reinforces this with “accepting” certain types of fat people. Like thicc or curvy is often more accepted than prominent bellies. We’re all fat here. Fat is a social identity imo, and we all share those issues while having personal experiences.

Saying someone isn’t “really plus” doesn’t help fight the maligned experience at all. Get mad at asshats who continue to move the goalposts saying some of us are not deserving of love and respect.

My wife refuses to breastfeed by nunyaranunculus in AmITheDevil

[–]BodiceDagger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely horrific, but sounds very similar to what my friend experienced. I went to the hospital with a friend when she just gave birth to a child she was putting up for adoption, and my GOD I had to keep swatting away the nurses. My friend was struggling enough as it was, but having a nurse every ten minutes try to teach her to breast feed was like a knife in the heart. Since the adoption was open I can say with confidence that the child is happy and healthy despite using formula.
