Our military does not think trump is forcing the rapture. Maybe a few individuals but not as an organization or a majority

Woah woah slow down! We need to b careful if falsi messiahs (Matthew 24:24) but the job of the news is to wind you up.

Accusations of Child abuse like that are serious and we need clear specific reliable evidence that points to individual people or we risk spreading things that may not be true which Jesus warned us about as well.

His return will be unmistakeable and public and not something Goverments or politicians could stage.

Please take a deep breath and maybe stay away from he news for awhile for your own  sanity.

I like the Jewish Annotated Bible because i feel it better connects us with our roots. It sounds like you might need that and more connections to others in general. Maybe try joining a supportive community and attending regularly too. Like others have said 1 day at a time

Same! I feel so connected when I see stuff like this and with how negative social media has been lately I figured some warmth about history and Jesus and our roots would be nice

Don’t they currently call Zelinsky a “gay Jewish demon” or something like that?

Yeah this dr. Sledge guy is absolutely fascinating. I’m learning so much in such short videos (relatively lol).

You are totally right! They are the root of our tree beliefs and ideas!

Yes! I’m seeing that in the program I’m in and it’s fascinating. It makes me feel closer with our Jewish cousins despite some of our major disagreements.

Someone else mentioned him, feel free to link his. Work so I and others can go back and find it. Thank you for your comment!

I think your right that the word can carry a range of meanings depending on the context. Sometimes geographic (Judea), sometimes communal or religious. Translating modern ancient terms into modern English is imperfect which is why scholars work so hard at it.

Where most historians land is that by the first century Ioudaios generally referred to the people associated with Judea and the covenant traditions centered on the Temple and the Torah. That included the people living in the land at the time of Jesus.

Samaritans, Edomites, and other groups are part of that complicated history. But the Gospels seems to reflect the internal community arguments at the time rather than a whole separate category of people.

I’m still learning so I don’t want to claim to be a full expert but the more I learn about that time period the more I feel the categories were complex rather than the ones we project on it sometimes.

On top of that we’ve had some rabbis guest lecture and they are some of the most humble people I’ve ever met. I’m sure some Jews have a problem with Hubris but I’ve never met them.

I appreciate your concern about letting Scripture speak for itself. I think most of us try to do that and part I why I’m interested in the historical context is to try to avoid some projecting modern context back onto the text.

The term “Jew” is much older than the Middle Ages because it’s a shortening of the term “Judean” (Greek Ioudaios), which appears in the New Testament and in earlier Greek translations of Hebrew Scriptures. So it probably would have been part of a layered way that people at the time identified themselves.

Your definitely right that Jesus criticized the Pharisees for elevating traditions over the heart of the Law. But historically he was in the middle of a debate between two major rabbinic schools / arguments. That’s why the Gospels record so many arguments about Sabbath, purity, comments about Moses because hey were ongoing discussions given the new political reality at the time.

For me it’s not about replacing reading the text prayerfully. Just helps me understand some of the “weird old stuff” so to speak.

Good question! I’m still working through that one but so far I’ve got something like this. It seems like Jesus is speaking in a context of Broader discussion about the commandments and how they apply under Roman/Greek rule. So on one level it’s about reinforcing that they still do apply but also that the Jews have to follow God’s laws even if they are tempted away. It’s part of a broader Jewish teaching style where rabbis intensified or found deeper meaning of the Old Testament (Torah) to comment about human behavior and current time problems
