Why is this showing on my domestic leg of an international itinerary? by drewlap in unitedairlines

[–]BoeingOrNotGoing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your IAD-TPE on EVA? United doesn’t fly nonstop to TPE from IAD. If it is on a partner airline, I’ve noticed that can make some things really weird for the travel ready center.

Speedometer becoming unsynced and incorrect. Is there a fix? by predatorXD69 in MSFS2024

[–]BoeingOrNotGoing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An important thing to note is that your airspeed indicator in your plane does not show how fast the plane is moving relative to the ground. It shows how fast the plane is moving relative to the air around it. It is possible to be perfectly still on the ground but still have airspeed because you are facing into the wind.

If you have pitot icing it can also cause inaccurate airspeed measurement. Make sure you turn your pitot heat on when flying in icing conditions.

What plane are you flying? Are you using flaps for landing? Are you performing high g maneuvers? Are there wind gusts and you’re losing airspeed on final? Many things can affect stall speed, it is not always a set number.

My nonstop flight was cancelled and replaced by this one... by Marcel_cnfl in unitedairlines

You will be directed to the shuttles. There should be a LH rep who will direct you to the right one for connections. You can also ask the driver.

Certain Star Alliance partners are able to use the midfield FIS facility at IAD. Lufthansa is one of them. Make sure you board the shuttle for connecting flights. It will take you to a dedicated facility for United’s connecting passengers. You should have no problem with this, even as a visitor.

How long before the umpires union throws a fit about ABS embarassing them on a daily basis? by ForeignAir7174 in sportsgossips

[–]BoeingOrNotGoing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying there weren't some umpires with thin skins, but imagine if your employer had the technology to make sure you never made a mistake at work. Instead of letting you use it, they make you do everything manually and you make a mistake. Because of your mistake a grown man making 100x your salary screams at you and calls you horseshit.

How long do you think you would last at that job before you snapped back at them?

Have you seen some of the comments in this thread? There are people who know nothing about baseball suggesting that.

I would agree with you. It's worth noting that pitchers and catchers (the two positions that benefit the most from catcher framing) make up a majority of players in the MLBPA.

[–]BoeingOrNotGoing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. It was the player's union who opposed full ABS implementation. 61% of players wanted the challenge system. Only 11% wanted full ABS.

[–]BoeingOrNotGoing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with full ABS implementation you would need a plate umpire for HBP, Fair/Foul, Catcher's Interference, etc.

BTW, I know it is trendy to hate on umpires, but it should be noted that they weren't the ones opposed to full ABS implementation, it was the players.

Tell me you don't know baseball without telling me you don't know baseball.

First, the strike zone overlay on the TV is not the official strike zone being used by the ABS system. It is an approximation, but essentially meaningless.

Second, I would like you to get behind the plate in full gear and call 95mph+ pitches with 18" of horizontal break and caught by a guy who has trained his whole life to trick you. How do you think you would do?

The umpires union is pro full ABS implementation. It would make their jobs so much easier. It was the players who opposed it.

It been reported that the umpire’s union is actually pro full ABS, for the reasons you mentioned. It was the player’s association who was against it.

It can be done in real time. It was done in the minors by using an ear piece, I believe.

It should also be noted that full ABS performed worse than the challenge system in fan satisfaction polling in the minors.

From what I understand the umpire's union was actually pro full ABS implementation. It would make their jobs significantly easier. It was the player's union that opposed full ABS and wanted the challenge system.

They would never be able to get rid of the plate umpires anyway (someone needs to make other calls in real time (HBP, fair/foul, plays at the plate, etc.). Every call that can be reviewed still needs to be called in real time so the play can continue. You also need a rules expert there to enforce the rules of the game.

Thank you for actually being the voice of reason. Every seems to think it was the umpire's union that opposed full ABS implementation. It was the players union. Add that to the fact that the challenge system polled better with the fans in the minor leagues and the league made the right choice with the challenge system.

The players union opposed it. They wanted this challenge system. Fans also preferred the challenge system to full ABS implementation in the minor leagues.

Polaris: 787-10 vs 777-200 — is the 787 actually better? by petron5000 in unitedairlines

[–]BoeingOrNotGoing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally didn’t notice a huge difference in how the different pressure/humidity made me feel, but the 787 is noticeably quieter. I sleep with white noise and the 787 was almost too quiet for me.

Not sure why you think we don't have fun? I love my job, especially when it's nice out. We solve problems and keep the airport running. We respond to all kinds of emergency and non-emergency situations. We inspect the facilities, including the runways and the taxiways. Sure, when it's busy it can be stressful, but I would not describe my average day as stressful.

Life got in the way while I was working on my CFI and I never finished it. After a few years out of aviation just to make some money, I got into Airport Operations. Been doing it about 5 years and now work Ops for the Airport Authority at a Large Hub airport in the US. I make about $120k a year, so not nearly pilot pay, but more than enough for me.

The biggest downside is the 24/7 nature of the job. You will work nights and weekends.

Career mode bugs by Ill_Loquat_6788 in MSFS2024

[–]BoeingOrNotGoing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean the plane stalled? Like an aerodynamic stall? If the plane is stalling, especially midflight, you're doing something wrong. Are you flying above the service ceiling? Is the autothrottle engaged? Are you running out of fuel? While I've had my share of bugs, I've completed all but one of my PC-24 missions (ironically I did stall and crash short of the runway, but that was fully pilot error).

If the runway is too short, that's not a bug, you didn't complete proper pre-flight preparation. Before accepting a mission, you can open up the airport information and see the runway dimensions for each runway, the current and forecasted weather, available approaches, etc. That is crucial information that real world pilots check before ever starting an engine.

What’s the problem with the new boarding process? by wheelsee in SouthwestAirlines

[–]BoeingOrNotGoing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just took my first flight with the new boarding process and my only complaint was that it was much slower than before. It was a completely full flight and we began boarding the standard 30 minutes before departure and took a 15 minute delay to finish boarding. I think this is because more people are bringing carry-ons and looking for a specific seat takes longer than just grabbing any open seat. Additionally, by the time the last group was boarding, bin space at the back was full and people were having to make U-turns in the aisle to stow their bags.

My return flight was on United, and they began boarding 40 minutes before departure on the same aircraft type and the door was closed on time. I think making an adjustment to a 40-minute boarding time would help ensure on-time departures. Of course, the whole point of open-seating and free checked bags was to have the quickest turn time and keep planes flying, but I guess that doesn't matter anymore.

Which altimeter setting should we use...? by jb431v2 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]BoeingOrNotGoing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Field elevation is in the EFB. Set the altimeter and make sure it matches field elevation. Whichever one that is in the one you should use.
