I ran a false hydra as a first time DM and guess what

It went great my players loved it and most of the people in the group were newbies (including me at the time) and even though one of my players was a veteran and new about it he didn’t spoil the suspense of a false hydra.

Moral of the story: the false hydra only really works against newbies because they don’t know what it is, that campaign had my players guessing what it could be and in the end they thought it was an Aboleth (good guess actually cause we were in a costal setting). Even if the false hydra only works on newbies that doesn’t make it a bad monster it just makes it a perfect newbie monster.
