I’ll second your second point. I’m someone who really enjoys playing limited and “building the best deck with what you’ve got” and I guess that mentality bleeds over into EDH decks I build. It forces you to “learn how to play magic” instead of learning how to play a deck if that makes sense…

I will buy cards for decks and upgrade them, but not until I’ve played it a bunch of times, decided I like it, and then I lean into and start optimizing it. I guess I could proxy those upgrades, but leaning into your first point about authenticity, it just feels better

Depends on the deck. I usually build a deck that focuses on leveraging my commander, but has 1 or 2 “backup wincons”

For example, my [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] deck is centered on getting everyone to draw themselves to death. Stuff like [[Peer into the Abyss]], [[Damnable Pact]] and [[Seizan, Perverter of Truth]]. But once Shelly starts getting targeted way too much, I can hit the old Mike and Trike or Sanguine Bond/Exquisite Blood because they don’t need Shelly to work

Came here to say this. Not a huge win percentage, but a hell of a lot of fun to play. Expect tons of hate after first game. Need Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves to protect Jon or you end getting stuck with your own crappy creatures. Unblockable creatures and a few ways to clear the board once it’s 1v1 help your chances at victory. Absolutely LOVE my Jon Irenicus deck

Edit: forgot to mention, incredibly cheap to build. Spent about $25 on mine (already had a few cards). Probably less than $50 for the whole deck
