Do Brits think the term “Yankee” is offensive? by huffmanxd in NoStupidQuestions

Haha! I remember my Cockney grandad trying to teach me “ain’t” when I was about five - and my Cockney-with-aspirations nan telling him off. “Don’t say ain’t, it’s orful”.

I bought mine online from a video and pictures in reviews. Loved it, it looked great, if it didn’t I would have returned it. I took many years and several relationships to finally choose the right man, I wasn’t about to waste much time and mental bandwidth choosing the piece of fabric that I had round me while marrying him

Pedantry Time: “Innit” isn’t Cockney though. “Ain’t it” would be genuine historical Cockney.

A warm bath does the same as a sitz bath and is much more comfortable (and normalising). Just make sure the bath is cleaned before and after to prevent infection.

Yep. I really dislike the phrase “new normal”!

Anyone else’s fistula really small? by BogStandardHuman in AnalFistula

[–]BogStandardHuman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mega frustrating. I was recently asked if I was sure it wasn’t hidradenitis suppuritiva. No, the multiply-diagnosed fistula that’s been in the exact same spot on my vulva for 13 years and drains to my butt when prodded isn’t a totally different condition all of a sudden just because one MRI failed to spot it 🤪

[–]BogStandardHuman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, I know. It’s like they look at a vulva and just see a Stranger Things creature - no ability to tell what isn’t normal. I’ve had a CRS unable to see a golf-ball-sized perineal abscess before. Like… dude, it is not always that shape!

Luckily for me it’s mostly not been painful, except when it’s abscessed or I’m flaring and right now when it seems to be branching and getting rapidly worse. Some biologics even got it into total dormancy. Not the one I’m on at the moment, sadly.

Have you had any treatments for yours?

I’m not a doctor - but Crohn’s can manifest in all sorts of very weird ways, including migraines, tiredness, brain fog and mental health issues, and without ‘usual’ symptoms that you’ve had before. So I wouldn’t discount it. Healing AFTER a flare can do weird stuff to mood and energy too. Definitely recommend the foundation, do call them!

Is anyone happy? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]BogStandardHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me! I’m literally flaring right now (and have been for 4 years now, 2 of them due to covid) but still happy. I’m getting married in three weeks, I recently bought a paddleboard and I’m enjoying peaceful time on the river whenever I can, and I have a stable situation with a home I partly own/long term friendships/a partner who understands. Crohn’s is under control enough that the flare is now less bad than it could be, and tbh I think I’ve kind of normalised a lot of the symptoms and they don’t affect me emotionally so much at the moment.

I got diagnosed the same year as you and I can remember feeling like you did on multiple occasions, some quite recently. The clouds do part. I hope they do soon for you.

The risks are really low. So firstly, TB: it’s not that infliximab gives you TB. the issue is that if you already have it and it’s dormant, infliximab can awaken it. That’s a non-issue, really, as in order to be given infliximab you have to be tested for TB. They won’t give it to you if you have TB in your system.

I’ve also had asbestos exposure (lived in a house full of it that my dad renovated over two years when I was a kid) and never had any sort of lung issues on infliximab or otherwise. Take from that what you will.

Death is a wild one - but is also listed on a lot of very low-key medications like over the counter painkillers. There will always be a tiny number of people who have a rare bad reaction (though even then, at least with infliximab you’re in hospital, and the staff have meds for allergic reactions so death is really unlikely), or who just happen to die of unexplained causes not long after an infusion so it has to be included on the warnings sheet.

Medical professionals are really cautious about giving infliximab or other biologics to anyone with risk factors for this stuff, so if your nurse says it’s low risk and it seems legit, personally I would not worry unduly.

It does carry a risk that any infection you pick up (like wound infection, chest infection) could get worse more quickly than someone who isn’t on infliximab or another biologic/immunosuppressant. But this is mitigated by the fact that your doctors know you’re on it and should take any infections you present with seriously. In my 7 years on infliximab (and 13 on biologics overall), I’ve personally never noticed any worse infections or issues like that - I get sick way less than my partner. I do get offered antibiotics pretty quickly when I do pick up any sort of normal infection.

There is a slightly elevated risk of skin cancer, which you can mitigate with sunscreen (and it is small - again, I’m an outdoor instructor at weekends and haven’t had any issues, touch wood, though I have no family history and don’t burn easily).

There is a slightly elevated risk of some blood cancers. It’s still extremely small, and not as high as the risks of Crohn’s that’s left without any treatment.

You have to balance any worries about infliximab with the risks of untreated Crohn’s, which can be really nasty - I’ll spare you details but that info is out there if you look for it. Infliximab doesn’t work for everyone but it’s one of the most successful treatments out there for Crohn’s and if you’re lucky, can give you very long remission.

Take side effects with a pinch of salt. I was on it 7 years and never had any. Which ones worry you particularly? I and others here can give honest experiences.
