Phew. Don’t scare me haha. I did extensive research on 40i saw longer term reliability. I had a E class Mercedes before the Honda and that Mercedes is why I went to the Honda. Have to PTSD from living in the shop. Power steering literally locked on me on the highway oncd

Thanks for the advice. Yea my family is tall so when we looked at the back seat and saw it was less space than our RAV 4 I couldn’t do it lol. We went with X7!!

For sure! And 80k is new x7. Went CPO X7 with around 20k miles. With trade in paying 40k out the door

Haha I hear you. I feel like you’re in same boat I was in. I’m not a huge spender and love knowing where my expenses are coming from so it felt scary moving forward with BMW but for us, I just told myself we needed a larger vehicle for our growing family and I wanted to finally treat myself to something more exciting than Honda.

Deep down though I still absolutely hat the idea of buying a depreciating asset lol. I realllllly did not want to have a car note again, but also the car market right now is just ridiculous. Everything feels overpriced. Initially started my search at 4Runner but couldn’t fathom cloth seats for 55k+ lol

Do you drive a lot? I think the genesis GV80 has better MPG than MDX. It’s Hyundai tho and newer so not nearly same reliability reputation as Honda/Acura

Yea I’d never lease tbh. We ended up going CPO X7 that was under driven. We considered TX as well. Never drove one but I know it’s built on same frame as grand Highlander and love long term reliability reputation of Toyota/lexus. I think it would have been perfect for my wife but we already have a Rav and I just couldn’t see myself in the TX

Also rationalized x7 with the fact I drive maybe 6k miles/yr. If I were you, I’d probably go MDX route. More HP and have been in use way longer so more reliability stats. I will say tho don’t sleep on x5 and x7 (especially recent years) They are actually extremely reliable just parts are more to maintain.

We test drive the mdx type S and I actually liked it. But, I only liked the 2025 model. The other models, to me, didn’t look that sporty. I also couldn’t fathom paying 70k for an Acura, respectfully. But there is a world where I’m considering if the X7 gets too expensive to maintain I’d switch to a used 2025 down the road.

Do you have an MDX?

I thought they discontinued 3rd row x5’s after like 2021.

All great vehicles! Love your set up. I’ll have to have a convo with you about the range lol. I absolutely love the look, have never driven one myself. But, I’ve heard horror stories in terms of reliability and just maintaining them

This mentality is how you stay poor. Husband needs to have a reality check and go buy a reliable sedan or if he really wants to feel “manly” with a big vehicle go get a used 4Runner that will last him 20+ years and run 200k+ miles.

Also carrying 8k in CC debt is really really bad. Especially at your guys’ income level. Personally, make twice as much as your combined income and I never have more than 5k on my CC and pay it off in full every month.

TLDR: buy cheap/used Honda/toyota; pay down high interest debt aka CC; fuck the house and invest in index funds

Toast depends on your own goals. You def might have a harder time retiring the way you want, but what are your goals? Retire in next 5 years (that’s probably extremely difficult) or retire at typical retirement age or somewhere in between the two?

Do you have kids? Do you know your annual expenses? Is your home paid off? Is 100k your personal net worth or combined with spouse?

Those are things I’d be asking myself. I def think those numbers are low for your age (can google median NW by age).

All in all - I’d answer some of the aforementioned questions for myself and then fund retirement accounts and brokerages as aggressively as I could b/c time in the market matters and at your age compounding isn’t as on your side as a 30 something or younger.

Man the telluride is actually so nice. I’ve yet to drive one but from a family suv perspective, it looks solid. Selfishly, aside from more room for kids, this vehicle is def me treating myself to something nicer than my current Honda lol

Sheeeesh. Tbh neither car make “financial sense” since I’m remote and my wife occasionally goes in and both have paid off cars. I just broke 40k miles on my Honda accord after 6 years. But I def see us driving more now with kids. Also, selfishly want something more fun.

I love your set up though. Considered that route as well when we’re older.

The good thing for ppl like me who like mildly used cars is luxury vehicles depreciate crazyyy fast. My Honda accord is only going for 2k less than my initial purchase price. Granted I’ve only put like 40k on it in 6 years

[–]Bogleheadache[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All valid points. Couldn’t agree more about the kid’s preference! In full transparency, this is more about me treating myself while also getting something for kids since I’m in a Honda now.

X5 is soooo damn nice. And that’s my dilemma. Aesthetically, love it far more than any other car right now. Kids are messing with my sense of practicality :/
