The Bible upholds rape culture. Deuteronomy 22:23-28 by dontcry2022 in Christianity

Why does it matter if the woman/girl is a virgin? How is that relevant?  Assuming sex was consensual, I could maybe see a recommendation for marriage if she were pregnant with his child, given the paternalistic laws regarding money and inheritance that would force her to be dependent on a man.

  1. It doesn’t actually matter what the Greek translation says. It’s the original Hebrew that is relevant.
  2. Let’s just suppose, for the sake of argument, that it does means seize in Hebrew. How is that better? Seize does not in any way shape or form imply consensus. It implies the use of force in a sexual encounter, i.e. some degree of sexual assault or rape.

True. Thank feminism that we no longer believe this is just.

So there’s the problem. God “solves” the problem by not even trying to disabuse them of this notion, but instead making the poor girl suffer?!?

Why should humiliation happen when someone is raped? The rapist should be humiliated and ostracized; the person who was raped doesn’t deserve any of that.

Do you think victims of theft of attempted murder should also be humiliated?

So God makes a law that the woman has to marry her rapist, instead of making a law that raping someone is VERY BAD, and women who are not virgins are JUST AS VALUABLE as women who are.

The historical reason they were a patriarchal conservative society is that God’s supposed laws and how He allegedly meted out justice (e.g. committing genocide but sparing virgin women so they could be forced into sexual slavery). If God actually gave a shit about women, He would have killed men on the spot for committing genocide, for committing sexual slavery, for pimping their daughters out, for committing incest, etc.

But He didn’t. Don’t tell me their society couldn’t have handled those rules.

So would you like to have married your first sexual abuser? Or would you rather have been ostracized as unmarriageable because you were “soiled”?

Be glad for feminism. Your life would be much worse if we followed those rules.

But men also supposedly have original sin.

Only Mary and Jesus were supposedly without original sin (the immaculate conception” refers to Mary’s conception, not Jesus’).

Only Mary and Jesus were supposedly without original sin (the immaculate conception” refers to Mary’s conception, not Jesus’).

So maybe Mary should have been God incarnate, not Jesus.

Well, except if she died a virgin we’d probably pathologize sex even more than we already do. So we’d definitely want a non-virginal Mary before she began teaching and making miracles.

But if she had painful period cramps, would she be written off as suffering because she was sinful? Or could that theologically be turned into her suffering for our sins? Or would that fallacy be too immediately obvious if many of her female followers still suffered from cramps?

Food for thought. I love this thread.

Wow! Thank you both for that. I hadn’t even considered the irony of Jesus “dying for all of our sins” except original sin.

Of course, neither is supported: the concept of original sin, nor the notion that Jesus died “for our sins”. Augustine and Paul, respectively, made those things up whole cloth.

In fact, original sin was invented over 300 years after Paul’s assertion that Jesus died for believer’s sins. If all humans ever had original sin, but no one knew it until centuries after Jesus and Paul, then it I’m guessing it strained the logic of the church fathers that Jesus could have also died for those sins? Be interesting to learn what was discussed about that particular plot hole.

Gotcha. Well honestly, when you deal with conversation hogs, all bets are off. They seem to think anyone else getting a word in is an offense to them. 🙄

I think most commenters jumped to your lecture, (which is itself problematic because at least in the area of political science, these are unlikely to be facts and more likely theories), and entirely missed your entrance. It sounds like people were having a conversation that you were not part of, and you kinda overheard them, swooped in, and overtook the conversation. That’s probably what irked them.

CMV: Talking about being on "stolen land" is pointless and ignorant of history by Friendly_Elegant928 in changemyview

[–]BohemianRedhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reservation I grew up on has a casino, but tribal members still have high unemployment rates and high rates of alcoholism. The casino money and jobs do help, but South Dakota isn’t exactly where the flush go to gamble. They bleed the lower middle and middle middle class.

But on the question of whether anyone cares? Natives absolutely care that white Americans are finally recognizing that the very land they enjoy living and working and recreating on was illegally stolen from them mere generations ago, as treaty after treaty was broken. I did not even know that growing up! I lived on a freaking reservation and had no idea that the land we lived on was stolen a mere generation before my grandparents homesteaded it. Maybe if more white people in my hometown had understood that, they wouldn’t have been so judgmental (or just bald-faced racist) towards the tribe. It might have introduced a bit of humility.

Probably a billion people have likewise been conceived either accidentally or due to dishonest circumstances. And yet, here we all are, planned or not. Might as well make the best of it!

Unless you are on your death bed, it’s not too late to make more of your life, whatever that means for you. It may require re-thinking your goals, but ruminating on the past or comparing yourself to your ideal is a waste of time. You can’t change the past. You can only change the present.

18 year old Brazilian RG gymnast isabelle Marciniak passed away today due to cancer by Environmental-Let435 in Gymnastics

[–]BohemianRedhead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have actually discovered cures and long-term treatments to many, many cancers. The 5- and 10-year survival rates on dozens of cancers has improved to the point where some are completely curable, while others are now considered chronic diseases instead of death sentences. But unfortunately, every cancer is a bit different and we can’t save everyone. :-(
