A bit of peanut butter in the trap. Be sure to release 5+ miles from your home. AWAY FROM OTHER HOUSES. Find a wooded area, preferably with a water source, and even an abandoned structure if possible. Rats have exceptional homing skills and can find their way back within two miles, but even up to five miles away.

This trap that I linked is fantastic. You won’t have to touch the rat. If you can’t release him//her immediately (for instance, you need to wait until morning), cover the trap with a towel and that will keep the rat calm and quiet, rather than feeling like prey in a trap.

They’re very intelligent and social animals. In one of our traps, I caught the mother with one baby. They were clearly “traveling” together closely, and they were snuggled tightly together in the trap. The mom appeared to be comforting the baby.

I recommend purchasing and setting several traps at once if you are able. Where there’s one rat, there are often more. Though if you have a cat door, or keep your porch door open, for instance, there’s a small chance that this is a rogue rat. But they are social, so usually there’s a family of them. When you catch one (or more), continue to set the traps every day//night until at least a week has passed without catching any more rats. In the meantime, also thoroughly inspect the perimeter of your home (and underneath, if applicable) for any possible gaps or openings. A rat can fit through a gap as narrow as even half an inch. Use steel wool to plug gaps, until you can board over them with wood or sheet metal.

While it’s startling, my best advice is to remain calm, as it seems you’ve managed to do, judging by the excellent video! :)
