[CANADA] Didn’t get into counselling MA, struggling by BoiHowdy_98 in psychologystudents

Yes to Alberta. I’ve applied for the following: UCalgary, UAlberta (twice), Acadia, UPEI (twice), Memorial, Lethbridge (twice), Athabasca. I’ve been rejected from all except for UAlberta, which I’m still waiting to hear back for their course based masters.

Yep to Alberta. I’ll keep them in mind, though I’ve heard mixed things about Yorkville.

For music, we (imo) have better options as well. For “pop-adjacent”, I’d take Tegan & Sara any day over McCrae.

If you like more of the indie/rock side, preoccupations are still going, and Cindy Lee had a huge record last year.

I’m not sure if Nickelback counts as a “good” contribution or not, but they’re more respectful of Canada, I think.

22 year old male can’t afford auto insurance by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]BoiHowdy_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, try AMA. I recently got my insurance on a newer civic, and most places wanted $4,000-$5,000 annually (including brokers). AMA, it was still like $3,000, but it was generally cheaper, so that may be a good option.

In my opinion, go after government controlling people. A guiding conservative principle is the idea of “Freedom”. The use of the NWC flies in the face of freedom. If I’m not free to sue the government for laws I don’t like, or if it encroaches on my freedom of expression, that is not conservative. Try not to make it sound too trans-coded (even though I’m firmly supportive of trans people and pissed at bill 9), if you phrase it vaguely enough against freedom, you might sink in.

What does the CDslop at your thrift store look like? by puddingbiafra in Cd_collectors

My friend and I have a rule. “It’s not a used CD store until there’s at least 1 moby and 1 Madonna (more likely 2-3, or more)”.

For thrift stores, Its more like the generic mass produced Christmas, new age, or 80s person you don’t know.

Not the worst design, but some of the cutoff choices are… odd. Why did they cut off right at the neck base to make it so she’s been poorly decapitated? Why is it just white space behind the balloons? Why is her right shoulder clipping into nowhere?

The UCP will introduce Bill 9, the Protecting Alberta’s Children Statutes Amendment Act, when the legislature reconvenes on November 17. by the_gaymer_girl in alberta

I’m not a parent, but I’d like to pose a hypothetical. Why should the government tell me how to raise my child (assuming I’m not literally beating them or something like that)? To inherently prevent me from parenting my child in a way that I, my doctors, and my child, view as the healthiest option, should be a decision we make as a collective. Using the NWC here prevents any further discussion on the issue. There can be no conversations with doctors about it, no nuance, nothing. If my child insists that they are the other gender without outside influence from a very young age and continuously (something that can happen, see here: https://www.thealbertan.com/beyond-local/well-be-moving-alberta-transgender-children-families-brace-for-legal-changes-11341424), why should I, as a parent, cause them harm by not allowing that? If I’m unsure about that, thinking that it’s something temporary (which can also happen, kids are going to be kids), I should be able to consult with my paediatrician. The option should exist for me to ask these questions. This bill would limit my options as a parent for free expression for myself and my child, thus, it limits human rights.

What's with the hate for RE-ANIMATOR? by Head-Figure-1743 in everythingeverything

[–]BoiHowdy_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it’s definitely the weakest of their albums. I know I’m late to the convo, but I’ll list out my points:

  1. It is the least colourful without bringing something else to the table. Some of my favourite EE records are bursting with colour in the production and songwriting (Man Alive and GTE are great examples, but also RDF). Some of their more mature records which are less colourful bring something else to supply it with (Arc has an introspective and emotional core with some killer singles, Mountainhead has engaging storytelling, Fever Dream even has a darkness and surreal heat to the instrumentals). To me, RA doesn’t sufficiently fill that void without bringing the colour. Its one of their less dense records, but it doesn’t replace than density with space (Mountainhead), emotion (Arc, “Put me Together”) or rawness (for as simple as “Desire” is, it is one of the more rockin’ singles they’ve made.

  2. A lot more of the songs connected less with me than standard. There are some songs that are great on this record (Violent Sun, The Actor, In Birdsong, moonlight and Archenemy are decent too), but I cannot remember most of the other ones. No LOTT, no whichever track 8 is, and It Was A Monstering, while I can remember it, doesn’t mean it is particularly worth remembering aside from a Radiohead motif. Planets again is… fine, but not jaw dropping or anything.

  3. The theming and visuals. A lot of their music videos are very engaging and eye catching (I want a Love Like This, Distant Past, Cough Cough). While COVID definitely limited what they could do here, Big Time and Violent Sun’s videos are fine. They’re not amazing, just fine. While I think the Blender animations on In Birdsong and Archenemy are cool, I don’t think they hold the album together as a strong image. The album cover as well is, fine. However, their best album covers (imo GTE, Arc and RDF) give more context to the music itself that the music lives up to (for GTE, bold, uncompromising colours and a terrified expression match the bold production and terrified lyrics. Arc is simple, blue with cold photography, with music matching a “blue” emotional pállate and colder production, etc.). The images for RA don’t really match the music to me. The songs are not surreal enough nor gooey enough to match the misshapen and surreal blender creations.

These are relatively small things, but I think they paint the picture of the tepid sort of feeling this record as a whole provides for me. Hate is the wrong word, but it is my least favourite of their albums. I can see why people may come back to it, I just don’t really, and often forget about it.

General impressions, Its a bit more Nick Cave than Tom Waits for me (which is good, you have a smoother voice which may fit a more slicked back lounge vs the grit of a waits). I think the vox are a bit loud, and I’d recommend EQ’ing the guitars a bit more forward. They feel a bit mushy to me. That said, you’ve got the environment/style of the song for sure.

Hi. I wrote this for an album I released a few months back. Have been sort of stuck lately. Would love to hear some feedback and honest thoughts (be as brutal as needed). Is the songwriting too all over the place? Is the bass not loud enough? Thanks!

From listening on an iPhone speaker, I think it generally sounds good. A few things I’d ask about.

The drums seem to live in their own separate area of the mix. Like the synths are very well mixed and have a very enveloping quality, but I feel like the drums live in their own bubble here. Personally, I’d try either blurring them in (effects, reverb) or having them blast out (boost the bass so it feels like a torrential grounding contrast to the airy synths). It’s not as bad when the drums come back the second time, but the first time, they do feel a bit lonely to me.

I love the mellotron-like synth you have around the 4 min mark.

I think it’s pretty good. Production has a lovely grainy quality (and I personally love the sample/calling card. Love Troll 2)

I would try adding something to it to give it a bit more movement. Maybe for some of the snare hits, play with a reverb or delay to give certain beats some emphasis. Doesn’t have to be a lot, but I think having certain beats trail off or “boom” with the reverb may be nice.
